Tamarillo (Solanum betaceum), also called tree tomato, grows best where it has warmth, well-drained soil, steady moisture and shelter from strong wind. Choose healthy planting material, keep water from pooling around the roots, and support branches as fruit develops. Exact climate and planting figures vary by region: the detailed recommendations below come from a Kenyan grower manual and should be adapted to local conditions.

Choose a suitable site

Tamarillo is a subtropical fruiting plant. A sunny, sheltered spot with reliable water and soil that drains freely is a practical starting point. The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) of Kenya gives a reference range of 15–20°C, annual rainfall of 600–2,000 mm (or irrigation), and elevations of 1,500–3,000 m for Kenyan production. These are regional recommendations, not universal limits for home gardens.

Drainage is especially important: the AFA manual states, “Tree tomato is not tolerant to water logging.” Its Kenyan guidance describes sandy, loam or clay-loam soil rich in organic matter, with pH 5.0–8.5. Avoid a site where water stands after rain; improve drainage or choose another location rather than trying to compensate with more frequent watering. AFA Tree Tomato Growers Manual.

Protect the plant from strong winds if possible. Tamarillos have shallow roots, and fruit-laden branches can break or a plant can be blown over. In hot, dry situations, an Indian Horticulture article excerpt suggests partial shade may be suitable; its available excerpt does not establish a universal shade requirement. Choose planting material and establish the plant

For a predictable start, source a healthy, correctly identified seedling from a reputable nursery. The AFA manual recommends certified seedlings from registered tree nurseries and advises soil testing before applying fertilizer or manure. Ask local extension services or a nursery familiar with your area which planting material is suitable and whether local plant-health or import rules apply.

Tamarillo can be propagated from seed or cuttings, according to the Indian Horticulture article excerpt. It describes seed-grown plants as more erect and high-branched, while plants from cuttings tend to be shorter and bushier. The available excerpt does not provide enough detail for a reliable propagation recipe or a controlled comparison of performance, so choose based on the plant form you want and the advice of a local nursery.

Planting guidance from the Kenyan manual

For its Kenyan production system, the AFA manual specifies 60 × 60 × 60 cm planting holes and 2 × 2 m spacing. It describes mixing topsoil with 20 kg of well-decomposed manure and 125 g of DAP or DSP per hole. These are manual-specific farm recommendations, not a universal home-garden formula: use local soil-test results and advice to determine whether amendments or that spacing are appropriate. If planting a grafted seedling, keep the graft union above the soil.

  1. Choose a well-drained, sheltered site with room for the mature plant and access for watering and harvesting.
  2. Check the soil and drainage; obtain a soil test before deciding on fertilizer or manure.
  3. Prepare the planting hole to suit the plant and local soil conditions. Do not assume the Kenyan hole dimensions or amendment rates fit your garden.
  4. Set the plant at its previous soil level. For a grafted seedling, leave the graft union above ground.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting, then keep moisture steady while the plant establishes.

Water, mulch and feed consistently

Maintain a consistent water supply, paying particular attention after transplanting, during flowering and while fruit develops. The aim is moist soil without waterlogging; adjust watering to rainfall, soil drainage and the plant’s needs rather than following a fixed schedule from another climate.

  • VERSATILE GROWING OPTIONS: Can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 8-11 as a perennial, or as an annual in cooler climates. Also thrives in containers for flexible placement.
  • CULTIVATION REQUIREMENTS: Plant outdoors after frost danger has passed or start indoors weeks before last frost. Prefers sun to part shade with average soil and water needs.
  • GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS: Produces beautiful white-pink flowers in spring, followed by striking red-orange to purple fruits that can be harvested from fall onward.
  • PLANTING SPECIFICATIONS: Allow 6-10 feet of spacing between plants to ensure proper growth and fruit production for these ornamental and edible garden additions.

Apply mulch around the plant to suppress weeds and conserve moisture, keeping it from pressing directly against the stem. Before adding fertilizer or manure, use a soil test or local growing advice. The AFA manual includes a specific planting-hole amendment schedule for Kenyan production, but it does not make that schedule suitable for every soil or garden.

Prune and support the growing tree

Young plants benefit from pruning that encourages branching and a sturdy structure. The AFA manual advises pruning newly grown trees to 90–120 cm (about 3–4 ft) to encourage branching. Treat that height as Kenyan manual guidance, not a rule for every cultivar or growing situation; avoid cutting a plant back without considering its size and condition.

Plan support before the branches carry a heavy fruit load. Stakes or other appropriate support can reduce the risk of branches breaking, while a sheltered site helps limit wind damage. Check ties and supports as the plant grows so they do not constrict stems.

Pesticide registrations, permitted products and safe-use requirements differ by country and change over time. Do not apply a chemical named in a regional manual as a general recommendation; consult local plant-health guidance and follow the product label and local law.

Know when to harvest

Fruit color depends on the cultivar: the AFA manual describes green fruit changing toward pink, red or yellow as it matures. Use the expected color for your plant rather than assuming all tamarillos ripen red. UC Davis advises harvesting as close to full ripeness as possible for better flavor.

Harvest is staggered rather than simultaneous. The AFA manual reports picking every two weeks throughout the year in its production context. UC Davis’s commercial postharvest guidance, last updated in November 2000, gives 21–24 weeks after flowering to commercial maturity depending on cultivar and production area, and lists full cultivar-specific red or yellow color as the primary maturity index. These are commercial reference figures, not a guaranteed backyard timetable. UC Davis Postharvest Research and Extension Center: Tamarillo.

The AFA manual reports trees maturing at 18 months and expected average output of 20–30 kg per tree, or 20–30 tonnes per acre per year. Its publication year is not stated in the accessed manual, and these are regional production estimates, not promises for a home-grown plant. Climate, care, plant material and growing conditions affect results.
