Many stainless-steel lunch boxes still have a plastic lid or silicone seal, while a truly all-metal box may not contain liquids. To choose a plastic-free setup, check every part that could touch food—and decide whether your definition also excludes seals, bag linings, and closures.
What does “plastic-free” mean for a lunch setup?
There is no universal definition established here, so decide what you want to avoid before comparing products. A food-contact-only standard is different from requiring the entire box and bag to contain no plastic or silicone.
- Food-contact surfaces: Check the inside of the container, lid, dividers, and any coating.
- Seals and closures: Look for silicone rings, plastic clips, and other sealing components. Silicone is listed as a reusable alternative in Canadian guidance, but it does not meet a strict no-silicone preference. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s food packaging alternatives
- The carrying bag: If your standard covers the whole setup, check the bag’s lining, zipper, and other components as well as the container.
The European Commission says materials intended to contact food—including glass and metal—must meet EU safety standards. Material choice alone does not establish that a particular item is safe for every use; follow its food-contact and care instructions. European Commission: Food-contact materials
Choose a container material that suits the food
Stainless steel
Steel is a practical option for a reusable rigid box. Check whether the lid and dividers are also steel and whether the box has a silicone ring. Steel containers with seals may resist leaks; all-steel boxes without seals may not be leakproof. PlanetBox’s lunch-container guide

An unsealed box is better suited to sandwiches and dry or thick snacks than to runny foods. Pack sauces and wet foods in a separate vessel designed to contain them, or choose a sealed design and verify its materials.
Glass
Glass is another reusable food-container material identified in Canadian guidance. Consider the weight and the possibility of breakage in the setting where the box will be carried; the cited guidance does not compare lunch-box models or quantify breakage rates. Silicone and other accessories
Some people accept silicone as an alternative to rigid plastic; others seeking a strict plastic-free setup exclude it. Read the material listing rather than treating “reusable” or “plastic-free” as a complete construction description. Also check compartment layout, ease of opening, and cleaning. For a child or anyone who may struggle with a tight seal, test whether the closure can be operated comfortably before relying on it for a packed meal.

Choose a lunch bag separately from the container
A soft-sided insulated bag carries the box and can help keep food cold, but the bag alone does not provide adequate temperature control for perishable food. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance recommends at least two cold sources for cold lunches, positioned above and below the perishable food, or an insulated container for hot food. For a plastic-free setup, inspect the bag as well as the box: a metal container does not make a plastic-lined bag plastic-free. Choose a bag that fits the packed container and cold sources, and that can be cleaned and dried thoroughly.

Advice can vary by location and conditions. Belgium.be reported on 8 September 2025 that the Belgian food safety agency recommends stainless-steel or glass containers and less perishable school-lunch foods such as hard-boiled eggs or hard cheese, especially in hot weather. Health Canada’s advice concerns reusable grocery bags and bins rather than school lunch bags specifically. It recommends keeping produce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood; washing cloth bags frequently and drying them after washing; and washing them thoroughly after a leak or after carrying non-food items. Purchase and packing checklist
- Define whether “plastic-free” applies only to food-contact surfaces or to the complete box and bag.
- Read the full materials list for the body, lid, seal, dividers, lining, and closures.
- Match the seal to the meal: keep liquids and sauces out of unsealed boxes.
- Check that the person carrying the lunch can open and close the container and that its size and weight suit the trip.
- For perishable cold food, use an insulated bag with at least two cold sources; for hot food, use an insulated food container, following USDA FSIS guidance.
- Wash and dry reusable bags regularly, and clean them promptly after leaks.
