Red maple (Acer rubrum) grows best when its site can accommodate a large tree, its surface roots and its preference for moist, slightly acidic soil. Choose full sun to partial shade, check local guidance for your region, and test the soil if leaves yellow or growth declines—alkaline soil can make manganese unavailable to the tree.
Choose a site with suitable light, soil and space
Red maple is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America, used for shade, streets, parks and specimen plantings. University of Minnesota Extension lists it for zones 3–9, in full sun to partial shade and soils ranging from sandy to clay, with average to wet moisture and drainage ranging from well-drained to poorly drained. Its recommended soil pH range is 4.5–6.5. North Carolina State Extension describes the species as preferring moist, slightly acidic soil and notes that it tolerates clay. These are regional horticultural profiles, not guarantees for every site or cultivar.
Make room for the mature tree before planting. North Carolina State Extension gives 40–70 feet as a more common height range and 30–50 feet for crown spread. Dimensions can vary by cultivar, so check the expected size of the specific tree you are considering. Red maple can form a dense mat of surface roots; those roots compete with plants beneath the canopy and may buckle nearby sidewalks or driveways. Avoid placing it close to paving or where shallow roots will conflict with construction, access or other planting.
Check soil pH before treating yellow leaves
Alkaline soil can cause manganese deficiency in red maple. University of Minnesota Extension warns that soil pH above 6.5 can lead to yellowish leaves (chlorosis), stunted growth and, in severe cases, tree death. North Carolina State Extension also identifies manganese chlorosis as a risk in alkaline soils.

- Due to agricultural laws, we unalbe to ship to California, AZ, AK, or HI
- At maturity, Autumn Blaze Maples typically reach a height of 40-50 feet with a spread of 30-40 feet, forming a symmetrical and rounded canopy
- Known for its vibrant fall foliage, the leaves transition from green to shades of bright orange and red, providing a striking autumn display
- Autumn Blaze Maples are characterized by their fast growth rate, making them an excellent choice for homeowners seeking relatively quick landscape impact
- USDA Hardiness Zones: Typically Zones 3-8
If foliage yellows or the tree grows poorly, have the soil tested and get a sound diagnosis before applying an acidifier or nutrient treatment. A symptom alone does not establish the cause, and the appropriate response depends on local soil conditions.
Select a cultivar for local conditions and available room
Compare cultivars by hardiness-zone fit, mature height and width, crown form and expected fall color. Fall color varies among trees and cultivars, so it should not be treated as guaranteed. University of Minnesota Extension lists named cultivars including Autumn Radiance, Autumn Spire, Brandywine, Burgundy Belle, Northfire, Northwood, Red Rocket, Red Sunset and Scarlet Jewel, with differing sizes, forms and traits in its regional guidance. That list is not a universal performance ranking; verify that a cultivar suits your location.

Watch for pests, disease and weather stress
Extension profiles report aphids, leafhoppers, borers, scale and caterpillars, as well as verticillium wilt, canker, fungal leaf spot and root rots. Minnesota Extension also notes salt sensitivity and recommends winter protection for young, thin-barked trunks against frost cracks and sunscald. Wind or ice can break branches.
These are possible problems, not a diagnosis of a particular tree. The cited profiles do not provide a complete diagnostic or treatment plan. If a tree is in serious decline, has major structural damage or shows persistent symptoms, seek a local extension service or qualified arborist for an assessment rather than treating by symptom alone.

Use local instructions for planting and routine care
Red maple is propagated by seed, and North Carolina State Extension lists seed among its propagation strategies. The extension profiles cited here do not specify planting-hole dimensions, root-flare placement, establishment watering frequency or volume, mulch practices, or a pruning calendar. Follow current regional extension instructions for those tasks instead of assuming a single schedule or method will fit every site.
For a construction or landscape project, coordinate the tree’s mature crown and surface-root zone with paving, utilities, grading and other site plans. The required clearances depend on the specific location and design; the extension profiles establish that roots and canopy need room but do not give construction setback distances.
