Common sassafras (Sassafras albidum) grows best in full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil. Plant a young container-grown tree in spring, give it room for root suckers to spread, and remove those suckers if you want a single-trunk specimen. This deciduous tree is native to eastern North America, so its suitability and local availability are greatest within its native range.

Where should I plant a sassafras tree?

Choose a spot with full sun or light shade and soil that drains well. Sassafras is most often associated with open woods and moist, well-drained sandy loam, but it can grow in a range of soil types within its native range. Avoid locations where water regularly stands around the roots.

The USDA Forest Service gives an optimum soil pH of 6.0–7.0. North Carolina State Extension describes sassafras as suited to acidic or neutral soils and notes that alkaline conditions can contribute to chlorosis. Treat drainage and how plants perform locally as practical priorities rather than assuming the tree requires one narrow pH in every garden. (USDA Forest Service; NC State Extension)

Allow space for a mature tree and possible root suckers. Sassafras can form a multi-stemmed thicket as new shoots emerge from its roots, so it is a better fit where that spread is welcome—or where you can remove unwanted shoots—than in a tightly confined planting area.

How do I plant and establish sassafras?

Morton Arboretum recommends spring planting. Choose a small, container-grown nursery plant, preferably from a native-plant specialist. Large nursery trees and wild-collected plants are difficult to transplant because sassafras develops a large taproot and extensive lateral roots. (Morton Arboretum; University of Kentucky Extension; Arnold Arboretum)

  1. Pick the site first. Confirm that it has suitable light, drainage and room for the tree’s eventual spread.
  2. Plant in spring. Follow the nursery’s planting directions and set the tree at the depth it grew in its container.
  3. Water during establishment. Water when rainfall is insufficient, taking the soil’s drainage and current moisture into account. The sources do not establish a single irrigation schedule for every site.

Established sassafras is drought-tolerant, according to NC State Extension, but a new planting still needs attention during dry spells while it settles in. In exposed locations, extreme winter weather may also warrant protection. If an established tree must be moved, do so while it is young; available sources do not establish a best transplant age, root-pruning timetable or success rate.

Should I grow one tree or let sassafras form a thicket?

Planting goal What to expect Ongoing management
Single specimen A more controlled, single-trunk appearance. Remove root suckers as they appear.
Naturalized group or screen Root suckers can develop into a multi-stemmed thicket with more coverage and wildlife value. Allow suckers to grow and provide enough space for the planting to spread.
Shrub-sized plant A deliberately low, recurring form rather than an unmanaged tree. NC State Extension says sassafras can be cut to the ground every two to three years to keep it shrub-sized; this is an optional size-management approach, not routine care.

Butterfly larvae use sassafras as a host plant, and its fruits feed wildlife, according to NC State Extension. Sassafras is dioecious: male and female flowers occur on separate trees, and female trees produce fruit. If fruit is important, sex and pollination matter; the cited guidance does not specify a reliable planting ratio or pollination distance. (NC State Extension)

Can I grow sassafras from seed or cuttings?

Yes. The USDA Forest Service reports that sassafras seed needs cold, moist stratification: 120 days in moist sand at 5°C (41°F) breaks natural dormancy. It describes sowing in a moist, rich loamy seedbed protected by leaf litter. Germination is hypogeal, meaning the cotyledons remain below ground; do not count on a quick, visible emergence. Root sprouts and root cuttings are also propagation options. Stem cuttings do not root readily, according to the Forest Service account and Arnold Arboretum. For a simpler route to a young plant, seek container-grown Sassafras albidum at a native-plant nursery; availability varies.

What pests and problems should I watch for?

Inspect the tree for Japanese beetles and other leaf-feeding insects, as well as leaf spots, powdery mildew and cankers. The Forest Service describes insect damage as generally minor except during small local outbreaks; this does not mean every tree will be pest-free. Look for and identify the actual problem before choosing a treatment rather than spraying by default. (USDA Forest Service; NC State Extension)

Is sassafras safe to use in food or tea?

Sassafras has historical food and beverage uses, but do not make tea or extract oil from its roots or bark based on those traditions. A University of Kentucky factsheet reports that sassafras oil contains safrole and that FDA rules prohibit safrole oil and sassafras bark in food. Because that factsheet is not a current primary FDA regulatory source, check current FDA guidance for authoritative, up-to-date regulatory wording. (University of Kentucky Extension)
