Clean those sources, then use a vinegar-baited trap if you still need to catch adult flies. Traps can reduce the adults you see, but they cannot replace sanitation.
Find and remove the breeding source
Adult flies are the visible part of the problem. Eggs and larvae develop in fermenting food or liquid, so killing or catching adults alone leaves the source in place. University of Maryland Extension calls sanitation the primary control for fruit flies: its fruit fly guidance explains that females lay eggs on food or fermenting liquid.
Work through likely sources, including spots that are easy to overlook:
- Discard overripe, damaged, or rotting fruit and vegetables. Check produce drawers, cupboards, and stored potatoes and onions for items that are leaking or beginning to spoil.
- Refrigerate ripe produce. If fruit and vegetables are kept at room temperature, inspect them and remove damaged or overripe items before they remain available.
- Wipe up juice, wine, beer, syrup, and other fermentable spills. Clean counters and sink areas where food residue collects.
- Rinse and drain bottles and cans before placing them in recycling; wash the recycling bin if residue has collected inside.
- Empty kitchen garbage and compost regularly, and clean the containers. Check beneath and behind movable appliances for hidden spills.
- Let mops and wet towels dry fully, especially if they have food residue on them.
UConn Extension notes that flies can enter from outdoors and that eggs may arrive on produce. It suggests washing produce with mild soap and water when you bring it home; this is a handling suggestion, not a substitute for cleaning contaminated surfaces. See UConn Extension’s fruit fly guidance.

Use a trap only for the adults that remain
After removing likely breeding material and cleaning the area, a trap can catch adults that are still flying around. University of Maryland Extension describes a simple jar trap:
- Put apple cider vinegar in a jar and add a drop of dish soap.
- Cover the top with plastic wrap and secure it.
- Make a small entry hole in the wrap and place the jar where adult flies gather.
- Check the trap and replace the bait regularly so it does not become another food source.
A purchased vinegar-baited fruit fly trap is another option. Cornell IPM also describes jar-and-funnel traps baited with ripe fruit or similar food. Whether homemade or commercial, treat a trap as optional adult capture—not a way to remove the breeding source. The available extension guidance does not establish that one commercial trap captures more flies than another.

Check whether they are actually fruit flies
A common household fruit fly is about 1/8 inch long, tan to brownish, and usually has bright red eyes, according to University of Maryland Extension. Fruit flies are attracted to overripe produce and fermenting liquids such as wine, beer, juice, and vinegar.
Their short development cycle helps explain why flies can seem to return quickly. Maryland Extension reports that larvae feed for 5–6 days before moving to a drier place to pupate, and that the full life cycle takes 8–10 days. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says it can finish in as few as 8 days under optimum conditions. Those figures describe development, not a guaranteed timetable for clearing an infestation.

If the flies seem to come from a drain
Do not assume every small fly near a sink is a fruit fly. Drain flies are often delicate and fuzzy and are commonly found around drains; their larvae live in gelatinous slime in drains and traps. University of Maryland Extension’s drain fly guidance describes these differences.
If drain flies seem more likely, physically scrub the drain and trap to remove slime. Virginia Tech Extension says bleach or vinegar poured down the drain is not recommended for drain fly control: it is not very effective and may damage pipes if improperly diluted. It also warns against pouring insecticides down drains. See Virginia Tech Extension’s drain fly guidance.

To check a suspected drain or disposal, the University of Kentucky describes placing a clear plastic bag over it overnight to see whether adults emerge there. This is a diagnostic suggestion from a Kentucky extension source, not a universal or validated test. See the University of Kentucky’s fruit fly guidance.

UConn Extension says pesticides are not needed or recommended for household fruit flies. Focus on removing fermenting food and liquid, cleaning residue, and trapping adults if useful. Pesticide advice varies by product and location; do not use a product unless its label permits the intended household use, and follow the label and local rules. The Kentucky guidance that discusses aerosol treatment is specific to Kentucky and also emphasizes following product directions.
