You can use a baking-soda paste to loosen oven grime, but first check your oven’s owner’s manual: approved cleaning methods vary by model and interior finish. Start with a completely cool oven and the racks removed. Keep paste and water off heating elements and the door gasket, and do not apply anything to a coated surface unless the manual permits it.
What you need before you start
- Baking soda and water
- A brush or flexible silicone spatula for spreading paste
- A nonscratch sponge and soft cloths
- A plastic scraper for stubborn residue, used gently and only if the manual allows it
Gloves are optional. Vinegar is also optional; manufacturer guidance differs, so check your manual before using it.
How to clean an oven with baking soda
- Check the manual and cool the oven. Confirm that manual cleaning is suitable for your model and which cavity and door surfaces may be cleaned. Let the oven cool completely.
- Remove the racks. Set them aside for separate washing. Do not assume they can stay in the oven during cleaning or a self-clean cycle.
- Mix the paste. Whirlpool’s example recipe is 1/2 cup baking soda mixed with 3 tablespoons water. This is one manufacturer’s method, not a recipe approved for every oven.
- Apply it only to permitted surfaces. Use a brush or flexible silicone spatula on suitable interior and door surfaces, following the manual. Keep the paste off heating elements and the door gasket. Avoid scraping or abrading coated surfaces unless the manual says it is safe.
- Let it sit according to the soil and instructions. Whirlpool suggests 20 minutes to overnight, with 12 to 24 hours for especially stubborn spots. 3M’s published method specifies 12 hours. These are individual makers’ instructions, not a universal schedule or guarantee of results.
- Loosen and wipe away residue. Use a nonscratch sponge or, where allowed, a plastic scraper gently. Wipe repeatedly with a damp cloth until the paste and loosened soil are removed. Keep water away from the gasket and heating elements.
- Wash the racks separately. Bosch recommends warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Rack finishes and care instructions vary, so consult your oven manual before choosing a method.
Should you use vinegar to remove the paste?
Vinegar is not required for the baking-soda method. Whirlpool and 3M describe using vinegar to help wipe away remaining paste; 3M suggests spraying distilled white vinegar onto residue until it foams, then wiping with a damp sponge. Bosch takes a different position, saying, “Cleaning an oven with vinegar is neither necessary nor advisable.” Follow your oven’s surface guidance rather than assuming the vinegar step is suitable for every model.
Manual cleaning or the self-clean cycle?
These are different approaches, and neither is universally right for every oven. Manual paste cleaning involves applying and wiping by hand, so suitability depends on the model’s allowed surfaces and how much effort the soil requires. A self-clean cycle uses high heat to burn soil to ash; Whirlpool warns that it can produce smoke and odors. If you use that feature, follow your owner’s manual, provide ventilation, keep vents clear, and remove racks if your model’s instructions require it.

Surfaces and parts that need special care
Heating elements
Do not spread paste on heating elements. Keep water and cleaner away from them as you wipe.
Door gasket
Keep paste, water, and cleaner off the gasket. GE warns that water or cleaner on it can cause deterioration. Whirlpool also advises not to clean, rub, damage, or move the gasket.

Interior coatings and door surfaces
Oven finishes and manufacturer instructions vary. Check the manual before applying paste to the cavity or door, and do not scrape or abrade a coated surface unless the manual permits it.
Racks
Remove racks before cleaning the cavity. Wash them separately according to the manual; both rack finish and whether racks may remain during a self-clean cycle can vary by model.

When to stop and check the manual
- The manual does not approve baking soda, water, or manual scrubbing for the surface you intend to clean.
- You are unsure whether the door panel or cavity has a special coating.
- Residue is close to a heating element, gasket, vent, or other area that should not get wet.
- You plan to use a self-clean cycle and are unsure about rack removal, ventilation, or preparation.
