Remove iris flowers as they fade, then cut the finished flower stalk down at its base. Keep healthy green leaves in place: when to cut back iris foliage depends on the type of iris and local conditions, but for most garden irises it is best to wait until the leaves die back, after a killing frost, or until early spring.
Deadhead flowers; do not cut healthy leaves
Deadheading and cutting back foliage are separate tasks. As individual flowers fade, remove them while leaving any unopened buds. When every flower on a stalk has finished, cut that stalk down where it emerges from the leaves. This tidies the plant without removing foliage that is still feeding it.
Do not shear healthy green leaves immediately after spring flowering. Some bearded iris cultivars may bloom again later, but deadheading does not guarantee a second flush, and the cited guidance does not establish that cutting green leaves causes rebloom.
When to cut back each type of iris

How to make the cuts
- Remove fading flowers. Snip or pinch off each finished flower without disturbing unopened buds.
- Cut the finished stalk. Once the stalk has no remaining flowers or buds, remove it near its base among the leaves.
- Wait on green foliage. For bearded iris, retain green leaves through the growing season. For Siberian iris, let leaves die naturally; Dutch iris foliage should wither on its own.
- Clear foliage at the right cue. Use a killing frost, fully dead or yellowing leaves, or early-spring cleanup as appropriate to the type and local conditions. UConn’s bearded-iris instruction after a killing frost is to leave 1–2 inches of foliage.
Clean bypass pruning shears are sufficient for stalks and foliage. Remove diseased leaves promptly rather than leaving them in place until seasonal cleanup.

Why timing varies
Bearded irises grow from rhizomes, while Dutch irises grow from bulbs, and their foliage does not follow the same seasonal pattern. Bearded leaves continue nourishing the plant after flowers fade; Dutch leaves typically wither naturally by summer. Beardless irises such as Siberian iris also allow a flexible cleanup window. Maryland Extension notes that “Siberian iris don’t require all the maintenance as a bearded iris.”
Frost, foliage condition, disease, and regional climate are more reliable cues than a single calendar date. That is especially important for Louisiana iris: available regional guidance differs, and the LSU AgCenter result advises earlier removal when rust is present.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Cutting all leaves after flowering: remove spent flower stalks, not healthy green foliage.
- Using one date for every iris: follow the plant’s type and the cues of frost or natural dieback.
- Expecting deadheading to force rebloom: repeat flowering depends on cultivar and conditions; it is not guaranteed by pruning.
