1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor continuous monitoring in a slow cooker, choose a leave-in probe thermometer whose manufacturer explicitly approves slow-cooker use. For a check near the end of cooking, use an instant-read thermometer instead; do not leave one in the food unless its instructions say it is designed for that purpose. The available model information supports one slow-cooker-specific example, not a tested or ranked list of five products.
What kind of thermometer works in a slow cooker?
Choose based on when you want to take the reading. A leave-in probe is intended to stay in the food during cooking; an instant-read thermometer is used near the end. A wireless connection or a label such as “meat thermometer” does not, by itself, establish that a particular model is suitable for slow-cooker use.
Leave-in probe: for monitoring while cooking
For continuous monitoring, look for explicit slow-cooker approval in the manufacturer’s instructions, a probe designed to remain in food, and probe and cable heat limits suited to your setup. Follow the manufacturer’s placement guidance. A wired probe with its display outside the cooker can let you monitor food with the lid closed, provided the product is designed for that use.
Instant-read: for a check near the end
An instant-read thermometer is useful if you only need to confirm the food’s temperature near the expected end of cooking. USDA FSIS describes thermocouple thermometers as taking 2–5 seconds, thermistor types about 10 seconds, and instant-read bimetal coil types about 15–20 seconds. These are type-level descriptions, not guaranteed reading times for every model. Take the reading as the thermometer’s instructions specify, and do not leave it in the cooker unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that.

Smart or wireless: verify the individual model
USDA FSIS says suitable wireless and smart probe thermometers can be used in slow cookers, but that does not make every connected thermometer suitable. For example, KitchenAid says it does not recommend its Smart Thermometer for slow cookers. Check the model’s own use instructions rather than relying on its connectivity, advertised cooking methods, or temperature limits alone.
A documented slow-cooker example—not a “best” pick
AcuRite’s model 00277 is a category example: the manufacturer describes it as monitoring food in a slow cooker with the lid closed, using a stainless-steel probe and heat-resistant cable. Its listing specifies a 3-foot cable rated to 700°F. Those are manufacturer claims and specifications, not independent test results or a comparison with other products. Check the current product instructions and listing before buying, since specifications and availability can change.

How to choose a model
Before buying a continuous-monitoring thermometer, check the manufacturer’s current documentation for each of these points:
- Slow-cooker approval: Confirm that the specific model is explicitly permitted for slow-cooker use.
- Use during cooking: Verify that the probe is designed to stay in food, rather than merely being suitable for a quick reading.
- Heat limits: Check the rated temperatures for both the probe and cable against the manufacturer’s placement instructions.
- Display and alerts: Establish whether readings appear on a display outside the cooker or through an app, and what alerts the product actually provides.
- Placement and care: Follow the model’s directions for probe position, food thickness, cleaning, and storage.
For an instant-read model, prioritize clear instructions for taking a final reading and select it only if opening the cooker to check the food near the end suits your cooking routine. A five-product ranking would require comparable, current model instructions and testing; the available evidence does not establish that comparison.

Check the temperature for the specific food
There is no single safe minimum temperature that applies to every meat or slow-cooker recipe. USDA FSIS advises using a food thermometer because color alone is not a reliable indicator of safety. Position the probe as its manufacturer directs, then compare the result with the USDA recommendation for the particular food.
For raw beef, pork, lamb, and veal steaks, chops, and roasts, USDA FSIS recommends 145°F (63°C), followed by a rest of at least three minutes before carving or eating. That recommendation is specific to those cuts; it should not be applied to ground meat, poultry, or every slow-cooker dish. Use the applicable food-specific guidance for other foods.

Use the cooker’s guidance too
A thermometer reading is only one part of using a slow cooker safely. USDA advises consulting the appliance instruction booklet for suggested sizes of meat and poultry, because slow cookers come in different sizes. Follow the cooker’s directions and the recipe as well as the appropriate food-temperature recommendation.
