The best maple for fall color depends on the shade you want, the space available and whether the tree suits your site. Sugar maples can turn yellow, orange and red but need room to mature; red maples offer red or yellow foliage, with named selections that differ in color and timing; Japanese red maple is a smaller ornamental option. No universal ranking establishes a single “best” maple, and color varies by tree, place and year.

10 maple trees to consider for fall color

This is a practical shortlist, not a ranked trial. It includes species, named cultivars and one hybrid; a cultivar’s color and timing can shift with local conditions. Check mature dimensions, hardiness and regional suitability before choosing.

  1. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum)

Leaves may turn yellow, burnt orange or red. The Arbor Day Foundation lists zones 3–8 and mature dimensions of 60–75 feet tall by 40–50 feet wide. It prefers full sun to partial shade; avoid confined sites and places with salt problems. Arbor Day Foundation’s sugar maple profile.

  2. Red maple (Acer rubrum)

Species-level fall foliage can be red or yellow, but color and intensity vary greatly among trees. Arbor Day Foundation lists red maple as common across zones 3–9. Its broad range does not mean every red maple suits every region or site; check local guidance. Arbor Day Foundation’s maple overview and UF/IFAS red maple profile.

  4. October Glory

This red maple selection tends to color later than Red Sunset. UF/IFAS describes bright red to orange fall color, sometimes on the same tree, lasting several weeks. Red maple vs. sugar maple for fall color

Consideration Sugar maple Red maple
Reported fall colors Yellow, burnt orange and red (Arbor Day Foundation, profile) Red or yellow; color and intensity vary greatly (UF/IFAS, profile)
Hardiness range stated in cited source Zones 3–8 (Arbor Day Foundation, profile) Common across zones 3–9 (Arbor Day Foundation, overview)
Dimensions stated in cited source 60–75 ft tall; 40–50 ft spread (Arbor Day Foundation, profile) Not stated for the species in the cited overview
Site considerations Not suited to confined spaces or salt-problem areas (Arbor Day Foundation, profile) Not especially drought tolerant, particularly in the southern range; regional adaptation matters (UF/IFAS, profile)

For a roomy site and a range of possible hues, sugar maple is a strong candidate. Red maple gives more cultivar choices if you want to consider earlier or later color, but neither a species name nor a cultivar label makes fall color identical from tree to tree.

How to choose a maple for your site

  1. Check mature size against the planting space

Use expected height and spread, not a young nursery tree’s current size. Sugar maple’s listed mature spread is 40–50 feet; Japanese red maple is listed up to about 25 feet tall. For other entries, get the cultivar’s dimensions from a reliable local source before planting.

  2. Filter by hardiness and regional adaptation

Use the zone information as a starting point, not a complete suitability map. The sources cited here do not give state-by-state recommendations for all ten choices. Ask your local extension service or a knowledgeable nursery which species and cultivars perform in your area.

  3. Match soil and moisture to the tree

Red maple is not especially drought tolerant, particularly in the southern part of its range. October Glory is described as doing best in wet places, with alkaline soil associated with chlorosis and poor growth. Sugar maple’s Arbor Day Foundation profile warns against salt problems.

Buying and planting considerations

Confirm the full species or cultivar name on the plant label, then verify that its mature dimensions, hardiness and site needs fit the location. If ordering a sugar maple, Arbor Day Foundation currently lists bare-root and potted formats: bare-root trees ship dormant and need close initial watering and protection from weather, while potted trees allow a longer shipping and planting season. Inventory, shipping eligibility and nursery terms can change; check the listing before ordering. Arbor Day Foundation’s sugar maple listing.
