Best Lift Chairs to Kick Your Feet Up and Relax, Based on Testing

Consumer Reports’ 2026 lift-chair test compares comfort, adjustability, lift, and other practical factors. Here’s what its findings can—and can’t—tell you when choosing a recliner.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 testing offers useful comparisons for power lift chairs—motorized recliners designed to help a seated person move toward standing—but it does not establish the best conventional recliners. Its test highlights a practical trade-off: a chair’s lift range, comfort, controls, and room fit matter more than a long list of extras.

What the testing does—and does not—show

Consumer Reports tested 10 lift-chair models, with 10 people of different ages and body sizes assessing comfort. Testers also measured adjustability, speed, and lift, and evaluated factors including chair size, accessibility, controls, noise, seat dimensions, and the time it took to move from fully reclined to fully upright. The tested chairs had stated weight limits from 300 to 450 pounds. These results apply to those lift chairs, not to recliners as a whole. Consumer Reports’ lift-chair test and recommendations do not establish category-wide picks for manual recliners, rocker recliners, wall-hugger recliners, or standard power recliners.

The tested lift chairs ranged from $300 to more than $2,500, according to Consumer Reports; prices and availability can change. In this test group, measured lift heights ranged from 25 to 29½ inches, and observed recline-to-upright times ranged from 32 to 48 seconds. These are sample-specific measurements, not general specifications for all lift chairs.

Tested chairs illustrate why fit and function matter

Consumer Reports’ recently tested models included the Golden Technologies Cloud PR510 with MaxiComfort, Bob-O-Pedic Ranger Brown Massaging Power Lift Chair, Sealy Posturepedic Sheldon Lift Assist Recliner, Pride Mobility VivaLift! Ultra Lift Recliner, La-Z-Boy Aster Platinum Power Lift Recliner, La-Z-Boy Billie Bronze Power Lift Recliner, MCombo Electric Lift Chair, Canmov Large Power Lift Recliner Chair, Best Choice Products Electric Lift Chair, and Flamaker Power Lift Recliner. The examples below are specific to the tested models; they are not judgments about every chair made by those brands.

Best Choice Products Electric Lift Chair

Among the smaller options in the test, this model measured 63 inches long when fully reclined and had a 27-inch lift height. Testers gave it low comfort ratings, showing why compact dimensions alone do not establish a good fit.

La-Z-Boy Aster Platinum Power Lift Recliner

This was the most expensive model tested, the slowest to move, and had the lowest measured lift height at 25 inches. It also received low comfort and adjustability scores. Consumer Reports noted an enclosed lift mechanism and a top back cushion that can flip back off when reclined.

Flamaker Power Lift Recliner

It reached the test’s highest reported lift height, 29½ inches, but testers found it uncomfortable and difficult to adjust and assemble. A higher lift measurement should not be mistaken for a better overall chair.

How to choose a lift chair for the person and room

Measure the body and the space

Check seat height and depth, overall chair width, and the length when fully reclined. Measure doorways and the route into the room as well as the chair’s intended location, including wall clearance. Consumer Reports recommends measuring the space and trying chairs in person when possible. A chair can fit its floor footprint yet still be hard to deliver, recline, or use comfortably.

Match the standing assistance to the user

Lift height and transition speed describe different parts of the experience. In Consumer Reports’ tested set, measured lift heights were 25 to 29½ inches, while observed transitions from fully reclined to fully upright took 32 to 48 seconds. Those measurements may help frame questions for a seller, but the right assistance depends on the user’s needs and the chair’s fit; a test result alone cannot determine that match.

Choose motor layout based on desired control

A single-motor design moves the back and footrest together. Separate motors can let the user adjust the back and footrest independently. Consider whether that added control is useful and whether the buttons are visible and easy for the person to operate.

Try the chair and its controls

Comfort is personal. Consumer Reports used a 10-person panel to assess comfort and also considered control visibility and ease of use. If possible, sit in the chair and operate it through its positions before buying. Check whether the seat, back, and armrests feel supportive, and whether the controls can be found and used without strain.

Prioritize core function over extras

Some tested chairs offered heat, massage, or charging features, but Consumer Reports cautioned that expensive features did not guarantee better test results. First determine that the chair fits, feels comfortable, and provides the desired assistance; then decide whether add-ons are worth paying for.

Get individualized advice for medical needs

For recovery-related needs or questions such as leg elevation, Consumer Reports advises consulting a doctor or physical therapist. A clinician can help identify what the chair needs to accommodate; the test does not replace individualized medical advice.

What this evidence cannot settle

The available test supports comparisons among the listed lift chairs, but it does not provide enough evidence to name a best overall recliner across lift, manual, rocker, wall-hugger, and standard power categories. It also does not establish a market-wide price range or a universal best fit. Check current product details and availability before deciding, and treat any test ranking as applying only to the models and criteria Consumer Reports assessed.
