You can grow a peach tree from a seed by removing it carefully from its hard pit, giving it a cold, moist period, then planting it about 2 inches deep. Sow in fall to let winter provide the chill, or refrigerate the seed in moist medium and sow it in spring. The resulting tree can be a rewarding growing project, but its fruit may not match the peach you started with.

What you need to know before planting

The seed is the kernel inside the hard peach pit. Cold conditioning helps overcome dormancy and makes germination more reliable. You can provide that chill outdoors over winter or under controlled refrigerator conditions.

A seed-grown peach is genetically variable. It may not reproduce the parent tree’s fruit quality or winter hardiness, so start from seed as an experiment or to grow a potential rootstock—not as a dependable way to copy a named variety.

How to plant a peach seed

1. Choose a ripe peach and clean the seed

Use a fully mature peach and remove the pit. Clean away the remaining fruit flesh. A ripe fruit is a sensible starting point, but the cited extension guidance does not establish a viability rate for pits from particular fruit sources or storage histories.

2. Open the pit without injuring the seed

Carefully crack the hard shell and remove the seed inside. Try not to nick or crush it, and leave its brown seed coat intact if possible. Virginia Cooperative Extension warns that injury to the seed can create an entry point for disease organisms; it does not require peeling the coat.

3. Choose how to provide the cold period

Both outdoor fall sowing and refrigerator stratification are supported approaches. The recommendations below come from different extension sources, so treat their timings as published guidance rather than a single guaranteed schedule.

  • Peach trees produce fruit with multiple applications. The fruit can be enjoyed fresh and is also suitable for making jams, preserves, pies, and fruit salads.
  • To improve success, cold stratification is recommended before sowing. Mix seeds with a slightly moist medium in a sealed bag and refrigerate for 6-8 weeks.
  • Plant seeds about 1 inch deep in moist soil. Choose a location with well-drained soil and full sun, ensuring the seedling receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Beyond fruit production, a mature peach tree offers visual appeal with its attractive pink blossoms in spring, adding significant ornamental value to home landscapes.
Method How it works What to watch
Fall sowing outdoors Sow the seed in fall and let natural winter conditions provide cold conditioning. Choose a site that does not become waterlogged. Local winter conditions and possible rodent damage can affect the seed.
Refrigerator stratification Keep the seed in moist—not saturated—sand, vermiculite, or another suitable germination medium in a container or bag in the refrigerator, then sow it after chilling. Check that the medium does not dry out or become waterlogged. Handle any emerging root or shoot gently.

Published peach cold-treatment recommendations vary: Virginia Cooperative Extension gives 10–12 weeks at 35–45°F (about 2–7°C); Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives 98–105 days at 33–41°F (about 1–5°C); and Oklahoma State University Extension describes approximately 100 days at 32–45°F (0–7°C). The cited pages do not state publication dates for these figures. Oklahoma State also reports that up to 50% of peach seeds may be dormant at ripening; that is a dormancy estimate, not a germination success rate.

4. Sow about 2 inches deep

Plant the seed about 2 inches deep in a pot or suitable outdoor soil. After refrigerator stratification, keep the medium moist while it germinates. Avoid breaking a root or shoot that started growing during chilling.

What to expect from a seed-grown peach tree

Iowa State Extension states that peaches do not reproduce true from seed. The resulting fruit may be inferior in size or taste, and the tree’s winter hardiness is uncertain. Climate and cultivar affect whether a peach tree survives and bears fruit; Iowa State’s advice about hardiness and late spring freezes is specific to Iowa, not a universal planting calendar.
