The best large indoor plant for a room is the one that fits its light, floor space, care routine and household—not simply the one with the biggest leaves. Here are 10 substantial plants to consider, with the conditions and trade-offs that matter before you choose.

Start with the room, not the plant’s height

Light is a primary constraint. It depends on intensity, duration and quality, and it drops as you move farther from a window. A room that feels bright to people may still offer limited light to a plant several feet from the glass. The University of Maryland Extension calls light “probably the most essential factor for healthy indoor plant growth” in its indoor lighting guidance, updated March 10, 2023.

Assess the actual spot where the plant will sit: how much window light reaches it, whether the sun falls directly on the leaves, and how far it is from the glass. If natural light is limited, supplemental lighting can help; the University of Missouri Extension and University of Minnesota Extension explain indoor plant lighting in their guides to lighting houseplants and lighting for indoor plants.

  • Check the footprint: Broad leaves, spreading fronds and climbing stems need room around them, not just space for a pot.
  • Match the care routine: Some plants want evenly moist soil; others do better when the top layer dries between waterings.
  • Account for pets: Common names can be confusing, so confirm a plant’s scientific name before relying on a toxicity listing.

The choices below are candidates, not promises that every specimen will reach a particular height indoors. Actual size and form depend on the plant and its growing conditions.

10 large indoor plants to consider

1. Monstera deliciosa

Monstera’s large, split leaves make it a strong focal point in a spacious room. Penn State Extension describes it as a good floor plant for large spaces and recommends bright light without direct sun. Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry between waterings; staking may help support its growth. In lower light, it can become leggy. Penn State Extension’s Monstera care guide gives further detail. The ASPCA lists Monstera deliciosa as toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA plant entry).

2. Fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata)

With an upright silhouette and large leaves, a fiddle-leaf fig can bring a sculptural, tree-like form to a room. West Virginia University Extension lists it as an indoor plant that needs filtered light and evenly moist soil. That care guidance is not a sign that it is low-maintenance. The ASPCA’s houseplant safety article flags fiddle-leaf fig as mildly toxic to pets. See WVU Extension’s common houseplant care guide and the ASPCA’s pet-safety article.

3. Rubber plant (Ficus elastica)

The rubber plant has glossy foliage and an upright form. Extension care guides include Ficus among indoor plants suited to medium light, making it an option for a room that is not in strong direct sun. Be precise about its identity: the large rubber tree commonly meant in houseplant lists is Ficus elastica, while the ASPCA’s “American rubber plant” entry refers to Peperomia obtusifolia. Those are different plants, so do not transfer care or toxicity information between them. See WVU Extension, Missouri Extension and the ASPCA houseplant article.

4. Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana)

Kentia palm’s upright, arching fronds give a room height without the broad-leaf look of a monstera. Missouri Extension identifies Kentia as one of the palms more tolerant of low light; North Carolina State’s care guidance, cited in the plant information, notes moderate light and a well-drained, humus-rich mix. The ASPCA lists Howea forsteriana as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is still sensible to verify the plant’s label and keep an eye on pets around any houseplant. See Missouri Extension’s lighting guide and the ASPCA paradise palm entry.

5. Dracaena

Dracaenas offer tall, architectural foliage, but the name covers multiple species and cultivars with differing light preferences. Choose a named type and check care guidance for that specific plant rather than assuming all dracaenas have identical needs. The ASPCA lists Dracaena species as toxic to cats and dogs; its Dracaena entry identifies the group.

6. Bird of paradise (Strelitzia)

Bird of paradise has large tropical leaves and a pronounced vertical presence. Illinois Extension places it in a bright-light grouping, so consider it for a well-lit interior rather than a dim corner. Common names can refer to different plants: the ASPCA’s toxicity listing is for Strelitzia reginae, which it identifies as toxic to pets. Confirm the species on the plant label and consult the ASPCA houseplant safety article before bringing one into a pet-accessible space.

7. Philodendron

Philodendrons range from climbing plants that can be trained on a support to large self-heading forms with broad leaves. WVU Extension includes philodendron among houseplants for indirect or dappled light and recommends staking climbing growth. The ASPCA warns that philodendrons contain insoluble calcium oxalates, so check the WVU care guide and ASPCA pet-safety information when choosing a type.

8. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)

A peace lily’s full foliage and flowers can suit a spot with filtered light. WVU Extension advises keeping its soil damp but not saturated. The ASPCA identifies peace lily as a calcium oxalate concern for pets, so it may not suit a home where animals can reach the leaves. See WVU Extension’s care guidance and the ASPCA houseplant safety article.

9. Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina)

For a branching, tree-like silhouette, consider a weeping fig. Missouri Extension includes it among Ficus plants suited to medium light and warns that low light can cause foliage drop. The ASPCA lists fig, including weeping fig, as toxic to dogs and cats. Read Missouri Extension’s lighting guide and the ASPCA pet-safety article.

10. Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla)

Norfolk Island pine has an evergreen, tree-like outline that can bring a different texture from broad-leaf tropical plants. Maryland Extension lists it for medium-bright light, so it is a candidate for a bright interior rather than a low-light spot. The available guidance here does not establish a uniform indoor mature size or detailed care routine; confirm species-specific instructions for the plant you select. See Maryland Extension’s indoor lighting guide.

How to narrow the shortlist

  • For a large, bright room: Consider Monstera deliciosa if you can provide bright, indirect light and room for its leaves and support. Bird of paradise is another bright-light candidate.
  • For medium light: Rubber plant or weeping fig may fit, but a weeping fig can drop foliage in low light. Check the plant’s actual position rather than judging by the room name or window direction alone.
  • For filtered or indirect light: Fiddle-leaf fig, philodendron or peace lily may suit the conditions described by WVU Extension, but their moisture needs differ.
  • For a pet-conscious choice: Kentia palm is the one on this list the ASPCA identifies as non-toxic to both cats and dogs. For every other candidate, verify its scientific name and the relevant ASPCA entry before deciding.
  • For a narrow footprint: An upright plant may work better than a broad or climbing one, but account for mature spread and space around leaves. Check the dimensions of the specific plant offered.

Questions to settle before bringing one home

  • Can the intended spot meet the plant’s light needs at its actual distance from a window?
  • Will the plant’s mature shape fit without blocking a walkway or crowding nearby furniture?
  • Are you prepared for its watering routine, and does it need a stake or other support?
  • Can pets reach it, and have you checked the exact scientific name against a reliable toxicity listing?
