Many fungi help recycle nutrients, and some form beneficial partnerships with plant roots; most mushrooms appearing in lawns and garden beds do not harm nearby plants. A mushroom alone, however, does not show which role a fungus is playing.
What a garden mushroom tells you—and what it does not
The visible mushroom is a reproductive structure, not the whole fungus. Most of the organism is hidden underground or inside material such as a buried root, stump, or mulch. The mushroom releases spores, while the rest of the fungus can remain after the visible structure disappears. Maryland Extension explains the difference between mushrooms and the fungi that produce them.
Seeing a mushroom does not, by itself, mean a nearby plant is thriving or sick. Fungi include decomposers, root partners, and plant parasites; identifying the role requires more than noticing a fruiting body. Most ordinary lawn and garden mushrooms are not damaging nearby plants, according to Iowa State Extension.
How fungi can benefit plants
Decomposers return nutrients to the soil
Many fungi feed on dead leaves, roots, wood, and other organic material. As they break that material down, nutrients are released and recycled in the soil, where they may become available to plants. UC Integrated Pest Management describes most lawn fungi as beneficial decomposers; Maryland Extension likewise notes fungi’s role in nutrient recycling.

Mycorrhizae partner with plant roots
Some fungi live on or within roots in a mutually beneficial association called mycorrhizae. The fungus and plant both benefit from this partnership. Maryland Extension notes these associations occur with many plants, including turfgrass, perennials, shrubs, and trees. Not every mushroom is evidence of mycorrhizae: a fruiting body may instead be connected to decaying wood or roots, and some fungi can parasitize plants.
Why mushrooms appear in lawns and garden beds
Mushrooms often emerge when conditions are favorable, especially during cool, damp weather. In beds, they may be associated with decaying roots, buried stumps, mulch, or other organic matter. Fruiting can be brief, even though the fungus remains in the soil or material. Maryland Extension’s lawn-mushroom guidance discusses these common conditions.

How to get rid of mushrooms in your yard or garden bed
If mushrooms are not a nuisance and there is no risk that someone will eat them, leaving them alone is reasonable. Iowa State Extension says most cause no damage to grass, soil, or nearby plants, so treatment is generally unnecessary.
For appearance or to reduce the chance that a child or pet will try to eat them, gather the visible mushrooms by hand, rake them away, or mow them off. This removes the fruiting bodies, not the fungus beneath the surface, so mushrooms can return when conditions favor fruiting. Maryland Extension says there is no practical, permanent way to eliminate ordinary lawn mushrooms; applying fungicide is not a dependable fix. The same distinction is captured by Kansas State University horticulture expert Matt McKernan: “A fungicide spray to the mushroom itself does little good. Remember the mushroom is simply the fruiting structure of the organism. Most of the fungus is below ground and inaccessible to the chemical. The above-ground mushroom only produces and spreads fungal spores.” K-State Extension published this guidance on June 30, 2026.

Safety: do not eat an unidentified mushroom
Never assume a mushroom growing in a lawn or garden is edible. Appearance alone is not a safe way to identify a species, and a photo or app should not be treated as proof that a mushroom is safe to eat. If a child or pet may try one, remove and dispose of the visible mushrooms; Maryland Extension advises this precaution.

This general guidance is for ordinary nuisance mushrooms, not diagnosis of a particular fungus or plant disease. A distinct symptom such as a fairy ring or visibly declining plants deserves local assessment. The presence of a mushroom alone cannot establish what is affecting a specific plant.
