There is no reliable universal code or button sequence for overriding hotel thermostats; the controls and limits depend on the property and device.
What “override” means in a hotel room
A thermostat that ignores a setting, resets after you leave, or stops heating or cooling may be responding to occupancy controls, a property-set temperature limit, or an equipment issue. In practice, an override may mean asking hotel staff to change a property setting—not entering a hidden code. The available evidence does not establish a guest-accessible override mode for an unidentified thermostat.
Hotel energy controls can use occupancy sensors. Puget Sound Energy explains that some systems detect when guests are present and allow the room temperature to drift toward an unoccupied setback when they leave: Puget Sound Energy’s hospitality information. Individual products can behave differently. Verdant says its own thermostat allows occupant control when someone is detected, adjusts the temperature after a room becomes unoccupied, and restores the prior guest setting when occupancy returns. Its product information also describes a setback delay and a night-occupancy feature: Verdant’s thermostat FAQ. Those are Verdant-specific descriptions, not a guarantee about the device in your room.
Try the guest controls first
- Select the intended mode. Check that the thermostat is set to heat or cool as needed, rather than an unintended mode or system-off setting.
- Set the target temperature. Use the visible up/down controls or touchscreen to choose a comfortable setpoint within the range the device permits.
- Check the fan or system setting. If there is a fan or on/off control, make sure it is not set in a way that prevents the system from operating as intended.
- Give the system time to respond. A displayed target is not a promise that the room will reach that temperature immediately. If the target changes or the equipment pauses, occupancy settings or the room’s HVAC equipment may be involved.
These are basic checks; control layouts and system responses differ by thermostat and property.

If the temperature will not hold or the room stays uncomfortable
Contact the front desk or maintenance rather than trying to defeat a sensor or property setting. Give staff the room’s current temperature, the thermostat’s displayed setpoint, and what the equipment is doing—for example, whether it runs, stops, or changes settings while you are in the room. Ask whether they can adjust the temperature, explain a guest feature, inspect the HVAC, or move you to another room if the system cannot maintain comfort.
For device-specific instructions, check the make and model printed on the thermostat or ask hotel staff to identify it. Then follow the hotel’s guidance or the manufacturer’s official documentation for that exact device. Do not infer a model from appearance alone.

Why there is no universal hotel thermostat trick
Hotel controls vary by property, device, and configuration. A 2008 California hotel-controls study documented several different approaches at selected sites: one system used an unoccupied 68–76°F range; another switched HVAC off in an empty room but ran it on a short duty cycle outside a preset range; and an Inncom system adjusted conditions around the guest’s last setting. These historical examples illustrate variation; they are not instructions for current products or a survey of hotels generally: California hotel-controls study.
Rules can also depend on location and code edition. California’s 2019 energy-code reference says covered hotel and motel thermostats must have setpoint stops available only to authorized personnel, limiting a guest’s adjustment to ±5°F (±3°C). For covered systems, it separately describes occupancy controls that set guestroom temperatures up in cooling and down in heating no later than 30 minutes after vacancy. These provisions apply to the systems and jurisdiction covered by that code reference; they are not a universal rule for hotels everywhere: California 2019 Energy Code reference.

What not to do
- Do not open the thermostat or tamper with wiring. The system is hotel property, and the available guidance does not establish a safe guest repair procedure.
- Do not try to defeat occupancy or window sensors. Hotel systems may use these controls, and setpoint limits may be restricted to authorized personnel.
- Do not rely on hidden-menu codes or button sequences found for an unspecified thermostat. A search-result article may describe one device, but that does not establish a safe or valid procedure for your hotel’s system.
