ABC Apartment is a 60 m² first home in Fortaleza, Brazil, designed by agência campo espacial for a young couple who cook and often host friends. How did ABC Apartment open up its living area?
Removing the living-room ceiling
The architects removed the living room’s drywall ceiling after consulting the building’s technical blueprints and finding no building services in the ceiling plenum. That exposed the ribbed concrete slab and increased the room’s ceiling height. The ceiling change is specific to this apartment; the project description does not establish permit status or the details of any structural review.
Connecting the balcony and social areas
The frame separating the balcony from the rest of the apartment was also removed. This extended the balcony’s qualities into the social areas and opened the living space toward city views. What design ideas shape the apartment’s interior?
Color marks different zones
Distinct colors give the entry hall, kitchen and office their own identities: blue at the entrance, pink in the kitchen and orange in the office. The brighter accents sit alongside a restrained palette elsewhere: light-wood cabinetry softens the living room, while gray tones continue through the main bedroom and echo the gray slab and floor.
Lighting emphasizes the ceilings
The architects describe a preference for indirect lighting and linear fixtures with a lower color temperature. The lighting draws attention to both the dropped kitchen ceiling and the exposed ribbed slab.
