Perennials can bring color back in later growing seasons with less replanting, but “low maintenance” depends on choosing flowers that suit your bed’s light, drainage and moisture. These 14 candidates are identified in university extension guidance; they are not a universal ranking, and local climate and cultivar affect how well they perform.

How to choose a perennial that needs less care

Start with the planting site, not the flower color. Iowa State University Extension separates low-maintenance choices for sunny and shaded beds, and its recommendations show why a plant in suitable conditions may need less attention than the same plant in a poor location. Check the plant’s light and drainage needs, then consider how much water the bed receives.

  • For sun and well-drained soil: Iowa State’s dry-conditions guidance includes threadleaf coreopsis, purple coneflower, daylily and stonecrop.
  • For shade: hosta is among Iowa State’s easy-to-grow choices.
  • For dry spells: drought tolerance means a plant can tolerate periods with little water; it does not mean it can survive without water. Newly planted perennials and plants in dry conditions may still need watering.

Bloom windows and mature dimensions vary by species, cultivar and region. The University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Center’s reference ranges below are useful for planning, not guarantees for every plant or climate. Check local hardiness guidance and the plant label before buying.

Perennials for different beds and seasons

1. Hosta

Hosta is an easy-to-grow choice for a shaded bed, where its foliage can provide color and texture even when flowers are not the main attraction. Choose it for a site suited to shade rather than treating it as a sunny-bed perennial.

3. Perennial salvia

Perennial salvias suit sunny beds with well-drained soil, moderate moisture and good air circulation. Iowa State includes them among easy-to-grow perennials. Match the specific salvia and cultivar to your local conditions rather than assuming every plant sold under the name has the same needs.

4. Purple coneflower

Purple coneflower is included in Iowa State’s dry-site recommendations, making it a candidate for sunny, well-drained beds. UConn lists a June-to-August bloom window and a height range of 24–60 inches. Use those figures as reference ranges, not fixed expectations for every cultivar.

UConn’s broader sedum reference lists August-to-November bloom and a height range of 6–24 inches, which varies by cultivar.

Plan for establishment and local conditions

Even a drought-tolerant perennial needs water to survive. UConn Extension notes that drought-tolerant plants can tolerate periods of little water, not an absence of water altogether. Pay particular attention to watering while new plants establish, and adjust for rainfall and the actual moisture of the bed.

Before planting, verify the plant’s hardiness for your area, the exact cultivar’s mature size and bloom period, and any regional guidance not covered here. The cited extension recommendations support these candidates, but they do not establish a ranked top 15, universal maintenance needs, or suitability for every climate.
