Check whether your bread fits
Thick slices, bagels, and frozen bread can make slot dimensions and dedicated settings important. Before buying, verify the exact model’s slot dimensions and features against the bread you use. Product names can be similar while referring to different lines or generations.

What the published testing can—and cannot—tell you
The review counts show that some recommendations come from structured testing, but each outlet’s procedure and category differ. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 guide says its Kitchen Lab tested 21 slot-style toasters since 2023 and 81 models over the preceding 10 years, assessing ease of use and performance. TechGearLab says its 2025 guide covered 16 toaster products and was updated August 14, 2025.
RTINGS’ 2024 article reports testing 20 toasters and analyzing 650 slices. It says its “Toasting Range” box built on the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers’ methodology for household electric toasters. RTINGS also reported a bounded finding: across that cohort, whose prices ranged from $29 to $399 at the time, it found no clear relationship between price and its toasting-performance scores. Those are historical cohort prices, not current buying guidance, and the scoring excluded quality-of-life features.

RTINGS described an early test-location issue: it measured 107 V where approximately 120 V was expected, and about 1,400 W where Breville advertised 1,800 W; after moving the setup closer to the electrical panel, it reported the same toaster could draw 1,700 W. Those measurements describe that lab setup and product example, not what a toaster will draw in a typical home.
