How to Care for Succulents: Light, Water, Soil, and More

Keep succulents healthy with bright, suitable light, fast-draining soil, a pot with a drainage hole, and watering guided by soil dryness rather than a calendar.

Most succulents do best in bright light, a fast-draining growing medium, and a pot with an open drainage hole. Water the root ball thoroughly, let excess water drain away, then wait until the medium is substantially dry before watering again. Because succulent species and growing conditions vary, use the plant and its soil—not a fixed calendar—as your guide.

Give succulents bright light and acclimate them gradually

A bright window is a practical starting place for many indoor succulents. Bright indirect light may suit some plants, while others benefit from more direct sun. If a plant stretches, becomes pale, or develops flatter growth, it may not be getting enough light. Supplemental lighting can help when natural daylight is insufficient.

Do not move a plant from dim conditions straight into strong sun. Increase its exposure gradually: a sudden change can scorch leaves, leaving tan or brown patches. Light needs differ by species, so observe how the plant grows and seek species-specific guidance when you know its identity.

Water when the growing medium is dry, not on a fixed schedule

When it is time to water, soak the whole root ball until water runs freely from the pot’s drainage hole. Let the pot drain completely, and empty any saucer or decorative outer pot so the roots are not left standing in water. Then wait until the growing medium is substantially—or, in some conditions, almost completely—dry before watering again.

How long that takes depends on the species, season, light, temperature, humidity, soil, and container. Extension sources offer schedules ranging from weekly watering during active growth to intervals of two or three weeks for indoor plants. Those are examples, not a universal rule. In winter or during dormancy, when light and growth decline, reduce watering.

Choose a pot and mix that let water drain

Use a pot with an open drainage hole and a fast-draining cactus and succulent potting mix. You can also make a porous growing medium by combining an organic potting material with mineral amendments such as perlite, coarse sand, or pumice. Recommendations differ on proportions, so there is no single required recipe; the goal is a mix that does not remain wet around the roots.

A layer of gravel at the bottom does not replace a drainage hole. If you want a decorative container without a hole, keep the succulent in a smaller draining nursery pot and set that pot inside the decorative one. Remove it for watering and let it drain before returning it. Terracotta dries faster than glazed pots, so a plant in terracotta may need watering sooner under otherwise similar conditions.

Use symptoms to check the whole setup

One leaf rarely tells the whole story. Check the soil’s moisture, drainage, and light alongside changes in the plant.

  • HOW TO USE: To plant succulents, select a pot with a drain hole, fill 1/3 full of cactus succulent soil potting mix, place your plant in the pot, cover with more mix and press lightly; water and enjoy
  • Soft or mushy leaves or stems, yellowing, or persistently damp soil: These can indicate excess moisture. Pause watering, let the medium dry, confirm that water can escape, and empty standing water.
  • Wrinkled or drying leaves: The plant may be too dry, but dry lower leaves can also be normal. Check the medium before watering rather than diagnosing from one leaf.
  • Pale, flattened, or stretched growth: Low light may be a factor. Improve the light gradually and watch for a change in new growth.
  • Tan or brown scorch patches: Sudden exposure to stronger sun after lower-light conditions may be responsible. Move the plant out of harsh direct exposure and acclimate it more slowly.

Adjust care with the seasons

Many succulents grow actively in spring and summer and need less water when growth slows in winter or dormancy. They generally need little fertilizer; if feeding is appropriate for the species, use a reduced-strength fertilizer during active growth and follow its label. Avoid routine feeding during winter dormancy.

Before moving a succulent outdoors, start it in shade and increase sun exposure gradually. In climates where frost occurs, bring tender plants inside before temperatures reach a damaging level.

Propagate using the method that fits the plant

Depending on its growth habit, a succulent may be propagated from offsets, a stem cutting, or a leaf cutting. For a stem cutting, use a clean, sharp cut, remove the lower leaves, and leave the cut end to callus for several days before placing it in well-drained medium. Most succulents do not root well in a glass of water. Clean scissors or pruners can help with some offsets and stem cuttings, but tools are not needed for every method.

Check for mealybugs and scale

Inspect plants regularly for mealybugs and scale. For a small, localized infestation, extension guidance describes dabbing the pests with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Insecticidal soap or neem oil may also be options for identified pests; use any product only as its label directs and check that it is appropriate for the plant.
