In an October 3 update, Khulna Gazette reported that Roads and Highways Department (RHD) executive engineer Md Tanimul Hoque expected traffic to use the first bridge by November 15, after deck concrete had been poured and cured and road markings applied. That date is a forecast, not confirmation that the bridge has opened. The second bridge is expected later, and an approved final deadline for the full project has not been confirmed in the cited reports.
When is the first Gallamary bridge expected to open?
The latest located update, published by Khulna Gazette on October 3, 2026, said the first bridge remained incomplete after missing an earlier September projection. Its main structure was visible, but deck concrete and parts of the approach roads were still outstanding. Hoque forecast that traffic could use it by November 15, following concrete work, a 28-day curing period and road marking. The report records an expectation, not an opening or a guarantee that the date will be met. Khulna Gazette’s October 3 update
English-language reports spell the location both Gallamary and Gallamari; this article uses Gallamary. The work is at a key entry point to Khulna city, where the Mayur River crossing has long constrained traffic.
Are both bridges finished?
No. The project comprises two adjacent, two-lane steel network arch bridges. The October update’s November 15 forecast concerns only the first bridge. In June, Hoque told Khulna Gazette that construction on the second would begin after the first was finished and could take nine months. That is a reported sequence and duration, not a confirmed opening date for the second bridge.

The June report described each bridge as 68.7 metres long and 23 metres wide, with a planned clearance of four metres above the river. The contract also covers about 750 metres of approach roads and has a reported total cost of Tk 67.66 crore. Khulna Gazette’s June 29, 2026 report
How far behind schedule is the project?
Khulna Gazette reported that construction began in October 2023 under an original 18-month contract, with completion expected on March 30, 2025. The schedule was extended to June 28, 2026. By June 29, 2026, the report said 39 months had elapsed and gave overall project progress as 40%, while the first bridge alone was 65% complete. These are June figures, not current progress estimates.

A separate Daily Star report dated April 12, 2026 put completion at about 60%. That figure should not be treated as directly comparable with Khulna Gazette’s June figures: the reports do not establish that they measured the same scope or used the same method. The Daily Star’s April 12 report
In June, the contractor, National Development Engineers Ltd, had requested an extension through June 30, 2027. The report did not say that request had been approved. A contractor’s extension request, an approved contract deadline, and a forecast for traffic to use the first bridge are different milestones; none by itself confirms completion of both bridges.

Why has construction taken so long?
Reports identify several difficulties at different stages rather than one established cause for the full delay:
- Uncertainty and imported materials: An unnamed senior RHD official told The Daily Star in April that work stalled following the political transition after August 5, 2024, amid security and administrative uncertainty. The official also cited delays importing structural materials. This is the official’s explanation as reported by the newspaper.
- Road-building supplies and fuel: In the same April report, Hoque described shortages affecting approach and service roads: “We need around 1,000 tonnes of bitumen, which we are struggling to procure. Our daily fuel requirement is 2,500 litres, but we get only about 200 litres.” Those figures describe the situation he reported in April; they do not establish that the shortages continued into October.
- Unfamiliar construction work: Khulna Gazette’s June report described imported steel components and specialist hanger installation. Hoque said the team and contractors lacked experience with this bridge type and consulted specialists. The newspaper’s English translation of his remarks was: “The new bridge, including the contractor, had no experience of the work. There was a lack of experience. The work was done in consultation with consultants.”
- Remaining deck and road work: The October report said concrete on the bridge deck and sections of approach road were not complete by the end of September. It described curing and road marking as steps still needed before the first bridge could carry traffic.
The accounts document constraints at different dates; they do not establish that any one factor alone explains the entire delay.

What does the delay mean for Khulna traffic?
The Daily Star reported on April 12, 2026, that Gallamary is one of 18 major road links connecting Khulna with Dhaka, Barishal and Satkhira. It described peak-hour waits ranging from 30 minutes to two hours and queues often longer than 1.5 kilometres. The same report estimated that about 500 buses and trucks and 5,500 to 6,000 easy bikes, three-wheelers and other small vehicles from surrounding upazilas use the route daily. These are the newspaper’s reported estimates, not an official live traffic count.
The crossing also serves a large kitchen market that draws buyers from six upazilas, according to the April report. Khulna Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for traffic Shafiqul Islam said: “About 10,000 easy bikes are licensed in the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) area, but nearly 50,000 operate in reality.” The distinction is between licensed vehicles and his estimate of those operating; the figure is not a count of traffic at the bridge.

The practical pressure predates the latest traffic estimates. A February 2025 Daily Star report described at least 500 vehicles, including cargo trucks, and around 5,000 easy bikes using the route daily. Driver Kamal Hawlader told the newspaper, “We often have to wait for an hour or more just to cross the bridge.” Those are figures and testimony from that earlier report, not a substitute for the separately dated April 2026 estimates. What the bridge replacement is meant to address
The earlier Gallamary bridge had low clearance that prevented even small boats from passing underneath, according to RHD information cited by The Daily Star. The replacement project is intended to address that limitation while providing two new road crossings over the Mayur River.
