Start mowing when your grass is actively growing, the lawn is dry and firm, and the blades have grown enough to cut without removing more than one-third of their height. There is no single spring date that works everywhere: the right moment depends on your grass type, its current height and local growing conditions.
1. Use grass height, not the calendar
Iowa State University Extension says there is no set date to start mowing in spring; growing conditions and grass type determine the timing. Use the one-third rule: choose the appropriate finished mowing height for your turf, then mow before the grass grows more than one-third taller than that target. For example, Iowa State’s FAQ gives these illustrative thresholds:
- For a 3-inch target, mow when the grass reaches 4.5 inches.
- For a 3.5-inch target, mow when it reaches 5.25 inches.
- For a 2- to 2.5-inch target, the FAQ gives a grass-height range of 3 to 3.75 inches.
These examples come from Iowa State’s guidance, not a universal height chart. Its separate spring lawn-care page gives another 3-inch-target example: mow at 4 inches and return the lawn to 3 inches. Follow the recommended height for your own turf and local conditions. Iowa State’s spring mowing FAQ, updated April 18, 2025; Iowa State’s spring lawn-care guidance, reviewed August 2024.
2. Set the cutting height for your grass
Grass species do not all thrive at the same mowing height. University of Maryland Extension lists these ranges:

| Grass type | Suggested mowing height |
|---|---|
| Tall and fine fescue | 3–4 inches |
| Kentucky bluegrass | 2.5–3.5 inches |
| Zoysia | 1.5–2.5 inches |
| Bermudagrass | 1–1.5 inches |
These are Maryland Extension’s recommendations; your local climate and lawn conditions can affect the suitable height. If your mower’s height settings do not reach the target for your turf, adjust the equipment before mowing rather than cutting too low. Maryland Extension says mowing at the proper height can reduce weeds and diseases by 50% to 80% in tall fescue lawns; that figure applies specifically to its established-lawn guidance for tall fescue, not to every grass type or to first-mow timing. University of Maryland Extension’s established-lawn guidance, updated September 14, 2026.
3. Wait for dry conditions and active growth
Do not mow wet turf or grass whose growth has paused during dormancy. Wait until the grass is growing again and both the lawn and ground are dry and firm enough for mowing. A mower works best when you can cut at the chosen height without taking off too much growth.

If the lawn is already too tall
Do not scalp it in one pass to reach the target height. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources advises lowering overgrown grass gradually through successive, more frequent cuts. This keeps each mowing closer to the one-third rule than removing a large amount at once. UC ANR’s guide to how much, when and how often to mow.

Before the first cut
- Identify your grass type and choose its appropriate target height.
- Check the lawn’s height against that target using the one-third rule.
- Wait for dry conditions and active growth; avoid mowing dormant turf.
- Check blade sharpness. Maryland Extension recommends sharpening mower blades at the start of each season, and Iowa State notes that dull blades tear turfgrass. Maryland Extension; Iowa State Extension.
