The lawn-care step that can help compacted turf is core aeration: removing small plugs of soil so air and water can move more readily into the root zone. It can support healthier growth, but it is not a guaranteed route to greener grass and not every lawn needs it every year. Whether to aerate—and when—depends on compaction, traffic, grass type, and local growing conditions.
What lawn aeration does
Compacted soil has less pore space, which can restrict the movement of air and water around grass roots. Clay soils, frequent foot traffic, and equipment loads make compaction more likely. Aeration creates openings that can improve access to air and water; it does not, by itself, correct every cause of poor turf or guarantee greener grass.
Useful clues include difficulty pushing a screwdriver into the lawn, traffic-worn patches, puddling, slow drainage, or runoff. These are signs that compaction may be a problem, not a laboratory diagnosis. The source article quotes Lawnbright founder Craig Elworthy: “You can test for yourself if your soil is compacted by doing the screwdriver test.”
Choose core aeration for compacted soil
Core aerators use hollow tines to remove plugs of soil. Spike tools make holes by pushing solid tines into the ground; they do not remove soil and are not an equivalent treatment for compaction. University of Maryland Extension warns that solid tines can compact soil around the holes. The source article quotes John Deere product manager Justin Urbanek: “There are two main types of aerators: plug and spike.”

For context, Maryland Extension describes typical cores as about 2 to 4 inches deep and 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide, spaced 2 to 6 inches apart. These are machine-dependent examples, not specifications every homeowner must meet. The plugs can be left on the lawn to break down over a couple of weeks.
Choose timing by grass type and local climate
Aerate when the grass is actively growing so it can recover. Timing varies by region and grass type, so use local extension guidance rather than a universal spring-or-fall rule. For example, Maryland Extension recommends fall for cool-season lawns and June through July for warm-season lawns. Nebraska Extension describes spring or fall for cool-season grass and spring to early summer for warm-season grass.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
These recommendations differ because local climate and growing conditions matter. Avoid aerating dormant or stressed turf simply to meet a calendar date.
How often to aerate
Frequency depends on traffic, soil, and the lawn’s condition. Maryland Extension gives these regional rules of thumb:

| Lawn conditions | Maryland Extension guidance |
|---|---|
| Heavy use or traffic | Every one to two years; annual aeration may be appropriate before seeding in high-traffic areas. |
| Typical home lawn | Every two to four years on the aeration page; its established-lawn guidance says every two to three years may suffice otherwise. |
These intervals are not a universal schedule. If the lawn shows no signs of compaction and grows well, the evidence here does not support aerating it automatically every year.
Prepare and aerate the lawn
- Check soil moisture. Soil should be moist enough for the tines to penetrate, but not saturated. If it is dry, water deeply in advance; the source article suggests about a week before when needed. Avoid working soil that is too dry or too wet.
- Prepare the surface. Mow on the day of aeration, somewhat lower than usual, if that suits your lawn and equipment.
- Mark obstacles. Locate irrigation heads, wiring, shallow utilities, and other hazards before operating equipment.
- Make passes across the area. Several passes may be needed; Iowa State Extension recommends working in multiple directions.
- Leave the plugs in place. They can break down naturally over the following weeks.
Fertilizer is not automatically required after aeration. If you plan to fertilize, follow a soil test and local nutrient guidance rather than treating aeration itself as a reason to apply it.

Manual, powered, rental, or professional?
A handheld step-on core aerator may suit a small spot; powered equipment is more practical for larger areas. For occasional work, Iowa State Extension notes that core aerators are often available from rental agencies and that professional lawn-care companies can perform the service. Choose based on lawn size, how often the lawn needs aeration, and whether you can safely operate and transport the equipment.
