This comparison draws on product specifications and test findings published by HGTV, Bob Vila, and TechGearLab; their picks and observations are attributed to those publishers, not presented as tests conducted for this article.
How to choose a hose reel
Start with your yard layout and how you want to handle the hose. A retractable wall unit rewinds automatically but stays near its mounting point. A manual wall reel needs cranking and a secure installation. A cart can travel between work areas but occupies ground space, while a freestanding holder avoids wall installation and depends on stable soil.
Before choosing, compare the hose length and diameter the reel can accommodate, whether a hose is included, how it connects to the spigot, and whether the winding mechanism matches your tolerance for manual work. Capacity alone is not enough: a reel rated for a long, wide hose may be sold without one, and a narrower included hose may deliver less flow than the 5/8-inch hose many gardeners use.
Six hose reels and storage options to consider
1. Giraffe Tools Retractable Garden Hose Reel — automatic rewind
HGTV selected this as its best retractable reel in a roundup updated September 25, 2026. HGTV lists a 130-foot included hose, a 180-degree swivel, automatic locking and rewind, polypropylene construction, and a product weight of 28.4 pounds. In HGTV’s testing, the 1/2-inch hose produced noticeably slower water flow than a standard 5/8-inch garden hose; that observation applies to its test, not every setup. HGTV’s review.

4. Eley Wood Post Mount — high-capacity manual reel
TechGearLab reports that the Eley Wood Post Mount holds 125 feet of 5/8-inch hose or 200 feet of 3/4-inch hose, depending on hose diameter. It supports multiple mounting orientations and is sold without a hose. TechGearLab’s reviewer says the hose needs hand guidance as it is wound, so the large capacity comes with more involvement than an automatic reel. TechGearLab’s comparison.

TechGearLab describes its Liberty Garden Single Arm Navigator as all-metal, with 360-degree rotation and capacity for 125 feet of 5/8-inch hose. Bob Vila’s best-overall pick is the Liberty Garden 712 Single Arm Navigator; Bob Vila reports steel construction, a weather-resistant coating, capacity for 125 feet of 5/8-inch hose, a leader hose, a storage tray, and a 360-degree pull-up handle. The similar names and specifications do not establish that both pages cover the exact same model, so confirm the model number when shopping. TechGearLab’s comparison; Bob Vila’s review.
Bob Vila’s testing found access to the 712’s inner reel fitting difficult. For lap-sided exterior walls, Bob Vila advises anchoring a wall-mounted reel into a stud. That mounting detail matters as much as the reel’s listed capacity. Bob Vila’s review.

Which type fits your yard?
- Choose retractable if automatic rewind and a tidy fixed location matter more than moving the reel. Check hose diameter as well as length, especially when comparing 1/2-inch retractable hoses with a 5/8-inch garden hose.
- Choose a manual wall or post reel if you want a fixed installation and need substantial capacity. Confirm the hose is included, that the reel fits the hose diameter, and that the mounting point is secure.
- Choose a cart if you need to move hose storage around the property. Consider whether the cart will remain steady while you wind a heavy hose.
- Choose a freestanding holder if you do not want to attach storage to a wall. Check the ground and expected hose load rather than assuming the stand will be stable everywhere.
What the published tests covered
HGTV says it purchased 15 hose reels and evaluated assembly and mounting, connections and leaks, winding stability and smoothness, and cart maneuverability. It mounted wall models on a staged plywood wall, connected reels to a hose bib and ran water to check for leaks, repeatedly pulled and wound hoses, and wheeled carts around a yard after disconnecting them from the spigot. Those are HGTV’s stated methods and results. HGTV’s review.
Bob Vila says it researched dozens of models and selected products for hands-on testing in its own yards, assessing ease of use, quality, capacity, and other features. Its review is dated May 6, 2026. Bob Vila’s review. HGTV’s cited roundup was updated September 25, 2026.
