Mill Food Recycler Review: Is It Worth It in 2026?

Mill can make food-scrap handling more convenient, but its dry grounds are not finished compost. See how the Essential and Plus compare and whether the cost, space and output route fit your kitchen.

The Mill Food Recycler dries and grinds food scraps into smaller, dry grounds; it does not make finished compost. It is most compelling for a household that wants less frequent, lower-odor scrap handling, has room for a large floor-standing appliance, and has a practical destination for the grounds. At current listed prices of $999 for Essential and from $1,149 for Plus, that convenience comes at a substantial cost.

What the Mill does—and what it does not do

Mill uses heat, airflow and stainless-steel augers to dry and grind scraps, with a carbon filter intended to control odors. It can run on a schedule or manually. Mill claims the process reduces scrap volume by 80%; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative result. The output is food grounds, not finished compost: it has not decomposed into the stable material produced by composting.

The distinction matters when deciding whether this appliance solves your waste problem. Grounds can be mixed with soil, added to an existing compost pile, put in a curbside organics bin where accepted, or used as a supplement for chickens where appropriate. Mill also describes pickup to a farm, but current availability, eligibility and fees should be checked directly. Local organics programs have their own acceptance rules, and animal-feed use may carry requirements; do not assume either route will accept the grounds. Mill’s product page describes its process and suggested destinations.

Current Mill models: Essential vs. Plus

Mill’s product page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists the following manufacturer specifications and terms. They are not independent test results; confirm price, availability and trial or warranty terms before purchase.

Drying, odor and noise

Good Housekeeping says its Institute tested the machine in the lab for almost two years and colleagues used it in home kitchens for more than a month. Its reviewer found scraps were almost always reduced to fine, dry grounds by morning and said the filter controlled odor well. The reviewer initially noticed odor because stickers had not been removed from the charcoal cartridge. The same review found processing somewhat noisy and noted a sharp sound when the automatic lock engaged; scheduling cycles overnight was its suggested workaround. Good Housekeeping’s review also warns that fat or oil can jam the device and that most yard waste and packaging should not go in.

HGTV reviewer Kelly Smith Trimble reported no bad smells or mold during several weeks of home use. She said daily additions took roughly three weeks to fill the unit, around 25 pounds of scraps at a time, and used the grounds in garden soil. Those are her test observations, not a typical-use guarantee or a promise that every household will get the same fill interval. HGTV’s review emphasizes that the grounds are not a substitute for finished compost.

Throughput and input limits

How quickly a batch finishes depends in part on what goes in: Reviewed’s Liz Kocan reports that wetter foods take longer. Her test’s app guidance did not recommend oily foods or saucy leftovers, large animal bones, hard shells, paper or compostable plastics. Good Housekeeping separately flags fat and oil as possible jam causes. The eligible-input list can depend on the current model and its instructions, so use the current Mill app or manual as the definitive guide rather than treating any reviewer’s test list as universal. Reviewed’s review discusses the machine’s input guidance and operation.

Where the grounds go

Before buying, identify a real endpoint for the output. The practical choices depend on your location, household and the current service terms:

  • Existing compost: Add grounds to an established compost pile if its operator accepts them; the machine itself has not completed composting.
  • Garden soil: Mill and reviewers describe soil use, but grounds should not be mistaken for finished compost or used as a guaranteed replacement for a balanced soil amendment.
  • Curbside organics: Confirm that your municipality or hauler accepts this material and any required container or preparation.
  • Chickens or farm pickup: Mill mentions chicken-feed supplementation and pickup to a farm. Check local animal-feed safety requirements and verify current pickup geography, eligibility, pricing and terms before relying on either route.

Access is uneven: TIME reported in 2024 that about 10% of U.S. households had access to compost collection. That context helps explain the appeal of home processing, but it does not establish that Mill is the best or lowest-impact solution in a particular community. TIME’s 2024 coverage provides that household-access estimate.

Is the Mill worth it compared with other options?

The right comparison is not just appliance versus no appliance. Compare how scraps are handled now, what your local service accepts, and whether you can use or dispose of the Mill’s grounds without creating another chore. Municipal organics collection may be free or less expensive in some places, while home composting can avoid appliance purchase and power needs. Historical context is not a current quote: TechCrunch’s 2023 account described some city collection as free and others at around $10–$20 per month at that time. Local fees and service rules vary. TechCrunch’s 2023 account discusses that variation.

Option Cost and space Labor, odor and output Key trade-off
Mill Food Recycler $999 Essential or from $1,149 Plus on Mill’s page accessed October 4, 2026; floor space, outlet and ongoing filter needs Scheduled drying and grinding reduce scrap volume, but require input sorting, cycle time and eventual emptying; output still needs a destination Convenient, contained handling in exchange for a high purchase price, electricity, space and some processing noise
Municipal organics collection May be free or lower-cost, but charges and availability depend on municipality and hauler Less home processing; follow local collection and sorting rules Often simpler if available and accepted locally; does not suit areas without service
Outdoor or indoor composting No appliance purchase required, but needs an appropriate bin or setup and space Requires managing a compost process; finished output is compost when properly processed Can turn suitable scraps into compost, but requires space and more active management
Smaller countertop recyclers Typically a smaller-footprint alternative, though costs vary by product Review the specific machine’s capacity, noise, eligible inputs and whether its output is compost or dried/ground material May fit a tighter kitchen, but should not be assumed to produce finished compost or accept the same volume

For ongoing costs, Mill’s current product page gives filter-life estimates—up to six months for Essential and up to 12 months for Plus—but the current filter price is not established here. Reviewed’s June 24, 2024 update listed a $60 annual filter cost, a $29.99 monthly rental and optional pickup for an additional $9.99 per month; those are historical figures, not current quotes. Bon Appétit’s 2025 article described rental around $35 per month and a temporary Black Friday offer alongside its coverage of usual pricing; that dated offer context should not be treated as today’s terms. Check Mill for current purchase, rental, filter and pickup details. Bon Appétit’s 2025 article gives its coverage-period context.

Convenience also does not by itself establish climate benefit. TIME reported about 60 million tons of food discarded annually in the United States in 2024, but that national figure says nothing about the net impact of this particular appliance. No independent comparative lifecycle assessment quantifying Mill’s greenhouse-gas effect against local composting or landfill handling is established here. Mill’s volume-reduction or diversion figures should not be translated into a carbon-savings number. Good Housekeeping reported Mill’s claim that its households and workplaces had kept nearly 10 million pounds of wasted food out of landfills as of June 26, 2025; that is a company-reported total, not an independently audited outcome. TIME’s 2024 article covers the national waste context, while Good Housekeeping attributes the diversion figure to Mill.

Who should buy it?

  • A stronger fit: You want a contained, scheduled way to reduce scrap volume and odors; have an accessible floor location and outlet; and know where the grounds will go.
  • A weaker fit: You expect it to produce finished compost, have little room, need a low-cost solution, cannot tolerate appliance noise, or lack a dependable route for the output.
  • Check before ordering: Confirm model dimensions, outlet access, current eligible-input instructions, local organics acceptance, filter availability and cost, and any pickup service’s current area and terms.
