How to Check If Your Microwave Oven Has a Radiation Leak

Inspect the door, hinges, latch, seal, and screen for damage, but don’t rely on DIY tricks to certify a microwave as leak-free. Know when to stop use and call a qualified technician.

You cannot confirm at home that a microwave oven is leak-free with a phone, food, water, or another informal test. You can check for visible damage and unsafe operation: if the door is damaged or will not close firmly, stop using the oven; if it runs with the door open, discontinue use immediately. For a suspected leak, contact the manufacturer or a qualified microwave service technician.

What you can check safely at home

Turn the oven off, then inspect the door and surrounding parts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says there is little cause for concern about excess leakage unless the door hinges, latch, or seals are damaged. Health Canada also identifies dirt buildup and the condition of the hinges and latch as maintenance concerns.

  1. Look for a bent, warped, cracked, or otherwise damaged door.
  2. Check that the hinges and latch are intact and that the door closes firmly.
  3. Inspect the door seal and viewing screen for visible damage or dirt buildup.

Do not use the oven if the door does not close firmly or is damaged. The FDA advises contacting the manufacturer about damaged hinges, latches, or seals. Health Canada recommends that adjustments and repairs be handled by qualified technicians.

What to do if it runs with the door open

Stop using the oven immediately if it operates while the door is open. The FDA warns that an oven in this condition may emit microwave radiation and recommends immediately discontinuing use. Do not try to reproduce the problem, insert objects to test the door, or disable or tamper with the safety interlocks.

Why informal DIY tests cannot prove an oven is safe

A phone, food, water, or other household test is not a reliable way to establish whether an oven is leaking. The FDA’s consumer guidance focuses on inspection and stop-use precautions; its technical field-testing procedures describe meter-based scanning under defined conditions. A household observation or a general-purpose RF meter should not be treated as equivalent to that equipment and procedure.

If the oven is damaged, behaves abnormally, or you remain concerned, contact the manufacturer or a qualified microwave service technician for assessment. The FDA also provides a route for reporting suspected radiation safety problems.

How official leakage limits differ

Published limits are tied to a jurisdiction and specific test conditions. They are not a household pass/fail recipe, and readings should not be compared without considering distance and whether a test load is present.

Jurisdiction and source Published limit Specified condition
United States — FDA 5 mW/cm² Throughout the oven’s lifetime, measured approximately 2 inches from the oven surface. FDA consumer guidance
Canada — Health Canada report describing applicable requirements 1 mW/cm² with a test load; 5 mW/cm² without a test load Measured 5 cm from an outer surface. The distances and test setups differ from the FDA figure. Health Canada survey report

What a historical Canadian survey found

A Health Canada report published in 2000 described surveys in the greater Ottawa area: none of 60 ovens surveyed before sale exceeded the report’s leakage limit, while one of 103 used ovens exceeded it when tested with a water load. The reported exceedance involved a 23-year-old oven, but another oven of similar age did not show excessive leakage. These geographically limited, historical results are not a current estimate for all ovens, and age alone did not identify a leaking oven. Health Canada survey report
