Choose by the land, component, clearance, soldering motion, and your iron’s compatible tip family—not by appearance alone.
How to choose a soldering iron tip
Start with the thermal capacity and geometry of the board and component. A tip with sufficient thermal mass and contact area can transfer heat effectively; a very small tip may struggle to do so. At the other extreme, a tip that is too large for the land can deliver excessive heat and risk damaging the board. HAKKO’s tip-selection guidance recommends balancing these needs rather than following a universal tip-per-joint rule.
- Assess the land, component, and board size, including how much thermal mass the work requires.
- Choose enough contact area to transfer heat effectively while keeping the tip small enough to avoid neighboring components and not oversized for the land.
- Account for access: narrow clearances and tall nearby components may call for a different geometry than an open, accessible joint.
- Consider the soldering motion and risk of bridging. Point work, drag soldering, and closely spaced pads can favor different tip shapes or working surfaces.
- Confirm the tip is specified for your exact iron or handpiece model. Shape labels and replacement part numbers are not guaranteed to be universal across brands.
If defects keep recurring with a chosen tip, reconsider both the tip and the soldering unit rather than assuming that an increasingly fine tip is the answer.
Common soldering iron tip shapes
HAKKO uses the following shape names and codes as examples; other manufacturers may label tips differently. The practical distinction is the working surface and the access it provides.
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
| Shape | Profile | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| B, conical | Pencil-like cone | Versatile point work; different parts of the tip surface can be used. HAKKO also illustrates chip-component work and drag soldering. |
| BC/C, bevel | Conical or cylindrical body with a diagonally cut face | The cut face provides a useful soldering surface, while the relatively thick profile offers thermal mass. |
| BCF/CF, tinned-face bevel | Bevel with solder plating limited to the working face | Suggested for dense components or situations where bridging is a concern. |
| BCM/CM, recessed bevel | Bevel with a recess in the cut surface | The recess holds solder for drag soldering; surface tension in it can help suppress bridging. |
| D, chisel or flat | Flat, screwdriver-like end | Its wider contact area than a B tip is useful for chip components and drag soldering. |
| I, fine conical | Narrower than a B tip | Fine components and tight spaces where a B tip could touch a neighboring component. |
| J, bent | Bent fine or flat end | The bent section can help with drag soldering and access in narrow spaces. |
| K, knife | Knife-like blade | Can be laid flat for drag soldering or held more upright for small components and narrow access. |
Match the shape to the task
- For a joint with clear access: A conical, bevel, or chisel tip may work, depending on the land size and heat-transfer needs. A chisel or bevel offers a broader working surface than a fine point.
- For closely spaced components: Prioritize clearance. A fine conical tip may fit where a broader tip cannot, while a tinned-face bevel is another HAKKO-described option when bridging is a concern.
- For drag soldering: HAKKO describes conical, bevel, recessed bevel, chisel, bent, and knife shapes for this motion. A recessed bevel holds solder in its working face; a knife tip can be angled between flat and more upright positions.
- When deciding between two sizes: Compare the contact width needed for heat transfer with the space available around the joint. A finer-looking tip is not automatically more effective if it cannot transfer heat adequately.
Check compatibility before replacing a tip
Tip series and part numbers are tool-specific. The historical HAKKO FM-202 manual, for example, lists particular T7-series part numbers alongside conical, bevel, and chisel descriptions. That documents the FM-202’s specified series; it does not establish that those tips fit other irons or handpieces, or that they are currently available. Verify the exact model and its manufacturer’s compatibility information before ordering.

HAKKO’s tip-maintenance guidance recommends removing solder with a tip cleaner during work and applying solder to the tip after soldering before returning the iron to its holder. Follow the care instructions for your particular iron and tip; cleaner materials and routines can vary by product.
