It can benefit the environment when its nutrients are returned to fields at rates and times crops can use: this recycles nutrients, can reduce demand for commercial fertilizer, and may improve soil structure and water-holding capacity. Those benefits are not automatic. Poorly managed or excessive applications can send nitrogen and phosphorus into waterways or groundwater.
What is manure?
Manure is material from livestock that can be used as fertilizer or a soil amendment. It contains recyclable nutrients and organic matter, and may also include solids, fiber and energy potential. Its composition varies with the animal, bedding, water content and handling, so manure is not a uniform product. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes these uses and differences in its overview of manure uses.
Why can manure be environmentally valuable?
It recycles nutrients to crops
Manure can return nutrients from livestock systems to agricultural soils. When its nutrient content and availability are matched to crop needs, it can reduce the need for commercial fertilizer. That does not mean manure is always a complete substitute: crop demand, soil conditions and the nutrients in the material determine what additional inputs, if any, are appropriate. USDA Economic Research Service explains the relationship between manure and fertilizer use in its manure-management guidance and nutrient-management overview.
It adds organic matter to soil
Fresh or composted livestock manure can add organic matter and improve soil tilth—the physical condition of soil for growing crops. More organic matter can support better soil structure and water-holding capacity. These are potential benefits, not guaranteed yield increases; results depend on the manure, soil, crop, climate and management practices.

When does manure create environmental risks?
The nutrients that make manure useful can become pollutants when application exceeds what crops can take up or when conditions favor losses. Excess nitrogen or phosphorus can move in runoff to surface water or infiltrate toward groundwater. The risk depends on the application rate, timing and placement, as well as soil, weather and the path water takes across or through a site. USDA ERS discusses runoff risk in its manure-management guidance; EPA describes runoff and infiltration as pathways to water pollution.
How should manure be managed?
Good nutrient management aims to supply the nutrients crops need while limiting losses. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) frames this as using the right nutrients at the right rate, time and place. In practice, that means considering crop and soil needs, local climate and site conditions, and when nutrients will become available. Testing manure and soil amendments can help determine the nutrient content and guide application. For a specific field or garden, follow local agricultural or gardening advice and product directions; there is no single application rate that fits every soil, crop and manure.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
- Rate: Base application on crop requirements and measured nutrient content, rather than assuming all manure has the same value.
- Timing: Apply when crops can use the nutrients and site conditions are suitable.
- Placement: Consider soil and runoff pathways, and use appropriate practices to reduce the chance of nutrients leaving the application area.
- Testing: Test manure and soil amendments where possible to improve nutrient matching and reduce pollution risk.
NRCS’s manure and nutrient management guidance provides additional principles for making these decisions.
What changes when manure is processed?
Composting, anaerobic digestion and other processing methods change manure’s form and potential uses. Depending on the process and site, the resulting material may be easier to transport, more available to plants, better matched to crop needs or less prone to environmental losses. These outcomes are not guaranteed for every product or system, and processing does not eliminate the need for appropriate nutrient management.

Composting
Composted manure can be used as a fertilizer or soil amendment. Its suitability still depends on its contents and how it fits the soil and crop’s needs.
Anaerobic digestion and methane
Anaerobic digestion can produce biogas and useful byproducts, and it is one management approach relevant to reducing methane emissions from manure. EPA also identifies management in drier, aerobic conditions as relevant to methane reduction. Digestion can involve high capital and operating costs, and its climate effects should not be reduced to methane alone: other greenhouse-gas emissions and carbon sinks also matter. It is therefore not universally climate-positive or financially viable. EPA discusses these considerations in its manure methane-reduction practices guidance.

How to assess manure for a particular use
Whether manure is a good choice depends on more than its nutrient content. Compare its measured nutrients with crop demand; consider when nutrients will be released and whether application timing is suitable; account for soil, weather and runoff risk; assess whether added organic matter is useful for the soil; and weigh storage, transport, application and processing needs. The right option varies by setting, so use local recommendations and testing rather than assuming manure or another fertilizer is best everywhere.
