Potato companion charts suggest beans, peas, corn, brassicas, herbs and flowers, but they are planning guides—not proof that a pairing improves potato yield or controls pests. Here are 23 plants found on extension lists, with their intended use and the important caveat that several are also listed as plants to avoid.
How to use a potato companion-plant list
Companion planting can help you use garden space efficiently, add flowering plants that may support beneficial insects, or combine crops with different growth habits. But extra plants also compete with potatoes for light, water and nutrients, and that competition can reduce the potato crop.
Extension recommendations are not fully consistent. West Virginia University Extension describes companion charts as a starting point whose results can vary by area. Oregon State University Extension and an Oregon Ask Extension answer offer overlapping but not identical lists. Treat the plants below as traditional or practical suggestions, not a ranked set of proven potato partners.
The list includes 15 plants appearing as possible companions in one or more of those sources, followed by eight plants that at least one source lists as plants to keep away. That distinction matters: a plant appearing on a companion chart does not establish a potato-specific benefit.

15 plants listed as possible potato companions
Edible crops and intercrops
- Beans: West Virginia University and Oregon State University list beans near potatoes; Oregon State specifies green beans. Beans can be considered as an edible intercrop. Legumes fix nitrogen, but that does not mean nearby potatoes receive a guaranteed fertilizer benefit during the same growing season.
- Peas: Listed by West Virginia University and Oregon State University. Like beans, peas are legumes and can be considered for an edible intercrop; a potato yield benefit is not established by these recommendations.
- Corn: Appears on the West Virginia University and Oregon State University lists. Consider its height and shade when planning a bed so it does not crowd or shade the potato plants.
- Broccoli: Oregon State includes broccoli in its brassica recommendations. It is one option for combining crops, but the chart does not show that broccoli specifically benefits potatoes.
- Brussels sprouts: Also included in Oregon State’s brassica list. Allow for its space needs and avoid assuming the pairing improves either crop.
- Cabbage: Listed among potato companions by West Virginia University and Oregon State. It is a traditional chart recommendation, not a proven pest-control pairing.
- Cauliflower: Oregon State includes cauliflower among brassicas suggested near potatoes. Its inclusion reflects a group-level recommendation rather than demonstrated results for this particular pairing.
- Parsnip: Appears on Oregon State’s traditional list. The source does not establish a potato-specific mechanism or yield effect.
- Watermelon: Also on Oregon State’s list. Because it spreads, consider whether its growth habit will crowd the potato bed.
- Eggplant: An Oregon Ask Extension answer lists eggplant among possible plants near potatoes. This recommendation differs from some other chart guidance, so treat it as a suggestion rather than a settled rule.
Herbs and flowers
- Horseradish: West Virginia University lists it, and Oregon State calls it the most commonly recommended potato companion. That popularity does not establish a measured benefit for potatoes.
- Lovage: Oregon State includes lovage in its traditional list. Account for the plant’s space needs rather than treating it as a proven potato aid.
- Marjoram: Oregon State lists marjoram as a possible companion. The recommendation is traditional; a potato-specific effect is not established.
- Marigold: West Virginia University and Oregon State include marigolds in companion lists. Do not plant them expecting control of Colorado potato beetles: University of Minnesota Extension says multiple studies have shown the widely repeated deterrent claim to be untrue.
- Nasturtium: Listed by Oregon State. Flowers can contribute to garden diversity, but the chart does not establish that nasturtiums protect potatoes from pests.
8 plants to keep apart according to at least one chart
These plants are included to make disagreements in the extension lists visible—not as additional recommendations. West Virginia University advises against several of them near potatoes; an Oregon Ask Extension answer also lists a number of these as plants to keep away. The sources do not establish one universal spacing rule or the same reason for every caution.
- Squash: West Virginia University lists squash as a plant not to put next to potatoes; the Oregon Ask Extension answer lists it among near-potato options. The recommendations conflict.
- Pumpkin: West Virginia University and Oregon Ask Extension advise keeping it away, while Oregon State lists watermelon, not pumpkin, as a companion. Avoid treating one chart as a universal rule.
- Cucumber: West Virginia University and Oregon Ask Extension list cucumber among plants to keep away. The sources do not provide a potato-specific distance supported by trials.
- Sunflower: Both West Virginia University and Oregon Ask Extension list sunflowers as plants to keep away from potatoes.
- Raspberry: Both sources list raspberries among plants to keep away.
- Tomato: West Virginia University and Oregon Ask Extension list tomatoes as plants to keep away. The charts do not establish a universal spacing threshold.
- Apple: Oregon Ask Extension lists apples among plants to keep away; the other cited potato charts do not resolve that recommendation.
- Birch, cherry and walnut: Oregon Ask Extension lists birch, cherries and walnuts among plants to keep away. These are chart-level cautions, not quantified spacing rules.
What companion planting can—and cannot—do
Some proposed benefits have a general gardening rationale. Flowering plants may offer food or habitat for predators and parasitoids, and plant diversity can make it harder for some pests to locate a host crop. Plant odors may also repel or attract insects, mask crop odors, or disrupt host-finding. These mechanisms do not prove that any particular plant on this list protects potatoes.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
More beneficial insects do not automatically mean fewer crop pests: they may not reach the plants where they are needed. Likewise, adding crops or flowers can make a bed more diverse but also increase competition for light, water and nutrients. Choose companions that fit the available space and season, rather than maximizing the number of plants beside each potato row.

How to choose and place companions
- Pick a purpose. Decide whether you want an edible intercrop, flowering plants for possible beneficial-insect habitat, or simply to follow a traditional chart. Do not count on an unverified pest-control effect.
- Check size and timing. Compare each plant’s growth habit and season with the potato bed. Tall or spreading plants can shade or crowd potatoes.
- Protect resources for the crop. Leave enough room for potatoes to receive light, water and nutrients. If the bed becomes crowded, remove or relocate the competing plant.
- Treat spacing chart advice as approximate. West Virginia University’s chart suggests positive pairings generally be within two or three rows and negative pairings at least two or three rows apart. It is chart-level guidance, not an experimentally validated potato-specific distance; the other sources do not establish one universal spacing rule.
- Use local guidance where available. Extension lists differ, so regional growing conditions and local advice matter more than treating any chart as a fixed rulebook.
