Identify the plant and choose a suitable spot
String of pearls is a trailing succulent in the daisy family, Asteraceae. It is also called string of beads or string of peas. Its rounded, beadlike leaves store water along slender stems. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says the stems can trail 90 cm (3 ft) or more; give the plant room to hang or spread. RHS: String of beads and its relatives
Give it bright light without the harshest sun
Choose a warm, bright indoor position with bright indirect light. An east- or west-facing window can be a practical starting point, but adjust for the strength of local sun. Some direct sun is tolerated; strong midday summer sun can scorch the leaves. Too little light can lead to weak, stretched stems and sparse, smaller leaves. As the RHS puts it in its growing guide, “They prefer bright indirect light, but will tolerate some sun.” RHS growing guide
Water according to soil dryness, not a calendar
There is no reliable universal interval for watering string of pearls: light, temperature, pot size and potting mix all affect how quickly the medium dries. Let the mix dry between waterings, and water more modestly in winter. Wisconsin Extension recommends waiting until the medium is completely dry and watering when the leaves begin to look slightly shriveled; the RHS likewise advises light watering and says winter watering can be sparing, or delayed until leaves start to shrivel. When watering, moisten the mix, then let excess water drain away. Do not leave the pot standing in water or keep the compost persistently damp. The RHS warns, “Overwatering and excessively damp compost can cause stem rotting.” RHS growing guide
Use a free-draining mix and a pot with drainage
Use cactus or succulent potting mix, or another gritty, free-draining medium, in a pot with drainage holes. Avoid an oversized pot: its extra volume of compost can stay wet longer than the plant needs. A shallow clay pot is another option when you want the medium to dry faster. Keep it warm and protect it from frost
Keep the plant warm and frost-free. The RHS gives 10–25°C (50–75°F) as the preferred range for the string-of-beads group and warns against temperatures below 10°C (50°F); its species guidance also describes warmer summers and cooler winters. These are care ranges, not a guarantee for every indoor setting. If you grow it outside in a container, acclimate it gradually, shelter it from excessive rain, and bring it indoors before frost. Propagate it from stem cuttings
Stem cuttings are a practical way to make new plants. Wisconsin Extension recommends tip cuttings about 3–4 inches long. Remove several leaves near the cut end, then place the lower nodes in or on moist potting mix. Mist the surface lightly while the cuttings establish roots. Diagnose problems before changing care
- Weak, stretched stems or sparse leaves: assess whether the plant is getting enough bright light; low light is a documented cause.
- Persistently wet mix or rotting stems: check that the pot drains, the mix is free-draining and the medium has time to dry between waterings.
- Wilting or shriveling: do not assume the plant needs more water. Both too little and too much water can cause wilting. Check the mix and roots, recent watering, light and temperature before adjusting care. North Carolina State Extension plant profile
- Brown or scorched foliage: consider whether the plant is receiving too much direct sun, especially strong midday sun.
- Yellowing or graying leaves, or visible insects: inspect the stems and foliage for pests. Extension sources list mealybugs and aphids, as well as whiteflies and gnats. Wisconsin Extension and North Carolina State Extension
Keep the plant away from children and pets
RHS describes the plant as poisonous and warns that sap can cause severe skin irritation. Wisconsin Extension reports that ingestion may cause vomiting or diarrhea and that sap may irritate sensitive skin. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets, do not allow it to be eaten, and avoid sap contact; gloves are a sensible precaution when handling cut or damaged stems.
