25 Types of Chairs and How to Choose the Right One for Your Space

Chair labels describe use, shape, base, or design lineage—and often overlap. Learn 25 common types and how to choose by activity, fit, clearance, materials, and room needs.

Chair names describe different things: what a seat is used for, how it is shaped, how it moves, or the design tradition it belongs to. That is why one piece can be a “swivel barrel accent chair” at the same time. To choose well, start with the activity and posture you need, then check the chair’s dimensions, clearance, materials, and storage needs against the room.

25 types of chairs: a practical guide

This is a useful vocabulary, not a formal or mutually exclusive classification. Some labels describe a purpose, others a silhouette, base, or design lineage. Names such as “barrel” and “tub” are often used interchangeably rather than as standardized categories. For examples of named design families, Vitra’s catalog includes Eames Shell, Standard, HAL, Panton, Softshell, and Eames Aluminium Group chairs; these are examples, not a complete history of chair design (Vitra chair catalog).

Dining and living-room seating

  1. Dining chair. An upright chair for a dining table. Check seat height and whether arms clear the tabletop and apron; the chair should also tuck in if that matters in your room.
  2. Side chair. Usually armless and versatile enough for a table or occasional seating. “Side” describes its role, not a fixed shape.
  3. Armchair. Any chair with arms. Measure arm width and height against the table or desk so the chair fits and can tuck in as intended.
  4. Accent chair. A broad label for a decorative or occasional-use chair. Judge its scale and comfort for the room and the length of time someone will sit in it.
  5. Lounge chair. Designed for a relaxed, often reclined posture. It may be comfortable for resting but is generally not a substitute for upright dining seating.
  6. Club chair. A generous upholstered lounge chair, often with arms. It is a style family rather than a strict technical category.
  7. Wingback chair. Recognized by a high back and projecting side wings. Consider its visual and physical scale; the silhouette alone does not establish an ergonomic benefit.
  8. Slipper chair. A low, armless chair that can suit compact spaces or rooms where easy movement matters.
  9. Barrel or tub chair. A chair with a curved back and sides that wrap around the sitter. The two names commonly overlap rather than marking a consistent technical distinction.
  10. Swivel chair. A chair on a rotating base. Swiveling can be combined with lounge, desk, or accent-chair forms, so check the full shape and function as well as the base.
  11. Rocking chair. Curved runners allow the chair to rock. Check the floor area it needs and whether it feels stable for the people and use intended.
  12. Recliner. A chair with an adjustable or reclining back, often paired with a footrest. Measure for its full range of motion, not just its upright footprint.
  13. Parsons chair. A usually straight-lined, upholstered style used for dining or occasional seating. Check its dimensions and how its upholstery should be cared for.

Flexible and elevated seating

  1. Folding chair. Collapses for storage or temporary seating. Compare folded dimensions and consider how it is set up and put away.
  2. Stacking chair. Designed to nest vertically with others for storage. It can suit spaces that need seating to be rearranged, but confirm stack height and storage area for the actual chairs.
  3. Stool, counter stool, or bar stool. Elevated seating may be backless or include a back. Measure the counter or table, check foot support, and allow enough clearance to sit and move comfortably.
  4. Adirondack chair. An outdoor lounge chair with a reclined profile. Account for weather exposure, the surface it will sit on, and where it will be stored.
  5. Butterfly chair. An informal lounge form with a sling seat suspended from a frame. Check the frame footprint and the care needs of both frame and sling.
  6. Windsor chair. A historic wood-chair family, generally characterized by a shaped seat and spindled back and legs. Variants differ, so assess the particular design rather than assuming every Windsor chair is alike.

Work and task seating

  1. Desk or task chair. Work seating, commonly with a height-adjustable swivel base. Fit it to the user and workstation rather than relying on the category name alone.
  2. Executive chair. A market label often applied to a larger upholstered office chair. The label does not guarantee ergonomic quality or a good fit.
  3. Conference chair. Intended for meeting rooms. Compare the dimensions, movement, and support with the expected duration of meetings.
  4. Drafting chair. An elevated task chair for higher work surfaces. Check that its height suits the surface and that it provides appropriate foot support.
  5. Kneeling chair. Uses a forward-leaning posture and shin support. It is one seating option, not a universally better choice for every person or task.
  6. Gaming chair. A task or entertainment chair marketed for gaming. Evaluate its fit, adjustments, and support as you would any chair intended for long sessions.

How to choose the right chair for your space

1. Start with the activity and posture

Decide whether the chair is for eating, working, meeting, relaxing, or occasional extra seating. Dining and desk work usually call for a more upright position; lounge seating is generally more reclined. A chair can look comfortable yet position someone poorly at a table, so think about the activity before choosing a silhouette.

2. Measure the chair and the furniture together

Record the chair’s width, depth, seat height, and—if it has arms—their height and width. Compare those figures with the table, desk, counter, or available floor area. For dining, Herman Miller gives approximate guidance that a seat should be about 12 inches below the tabletop or six to seven inches below the table apron. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal fit rule: check the actual table, apron, chair arms, and product dimensions (Herman Miller dining chair and stool guidance).

3. Fit office seating to the person and workstation

For desk use, consider seat height, seat-pan shape and clearance, adjustable armrests, the chair base and casters, and recline or tilt. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) chair guidance discusses these fit and adjustment points and notes that the page is under review (NIH ergonomic guide to computer-based work). The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises adjusting the chair together with the monitor, keyboard, and desk, and notes that trying different chairs can help identify suitable support and fit (OSHA Computer Workstations eTool: Chairs). This is ergonomic guidance, not a guarantee that a chair will prevent injury.

4. Match the base and wheels to the floor

For a wheeled office chair, check that the casters suit the workstation floor. OSHA recommends casters appropriate to the floor type. NIH notes that carpet casters are common and that soft wheels are available for hard surfaces. Confirm the specific caster and flooring combination rather than assuming every chair rolls well on every floor.

TRALT Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Chair with Lumbar Support Black, 1
  • High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
  • Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
  • Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
  • Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching

5. Compare the material with upkeep and exposure

Think about how often the chair will be used, cleaned, moved, or stored, and whether it will face outdoor weather. Upholstery, wood, metal, molded shells, and woven or slung seats involve different trade-offs in care, weight, comfort, and appearance. The material name by itself cannot establish performance; check the product’s care and use information.

6. Check what durability claims actually establish

Standards are specific to seating contexts. BIFMA lists ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017(R2022) for general-purpose office chairs and ANSI/BIFMA X5.4-2020(R2025) for public and lounge seating (BIFMA standards descriptions). ISO 7173 describes test methods for seating strength, durability, and stability (ISO 7173 record). The existence of a relevant standard does not by itself show that a particular chair was tested or passed it; look for product-specific evidence and confirm which standard and seating context a claim refers to.
