Rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry. Baking soda, vinegar, or lemon are optional—not necessary—and your microwave’s owner’s manual takes precedence for model-specific care.
Before you clean: protect the microwave’s surfaces
Check the owner’s manual for cleaning instructions, including whether to unplug the appliance. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service notes that some manufacturers recommend unplugging to reduce electric-shock risk. Make sure the controls are off and the oven is cool before you begin.
- Use a soft cloth or sponge. USDA FSIS cautions: “Do not use steel wool, scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, or oven cleaners.” (USDA FSIS microwave guidance.)
- Do not spray liquid directly onto the control panel. Wipe it gently with a lightly damp cloth.
- Wipe splatters from the waveguide cover gently; do not remove the cover.
1. Steam dried-on splatters loose
Steam helps soften residue so it is easier to wipe away; it does not clean away grease by itself. Put water in a microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup and heat it for about 2–5 minutes. Whirlpool’s general guide suggests 1 cup of water for 3–4 minutes for heavy buildup, while its product guidance gives 1 cup (250 mL) for 2–5 minutes. Heating time varies by model, so follow your manual and use a microwave-safe container.
Let the steam loosen the soil, then carefully remove the container and wipe the interior with mild dish soap and water. Rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry.

2. Wipe grease with mild dish soap
For fresh or softened greasy splatters, dampen a soft cloth or sponge with water and a little mild dish soap. Wipe the interior gently, then go over it with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue and dry the surfaces. This is the basic cleaning step even when you use steam first.
3. Use baking soda gently on stubborn spots
For heavier soil, baking soda is an optional method. USDA describes heating a water mixture to loosen baked-on residue, and Whirlpool also lists baking soda in water as an alternative. Follow your model’s manual for any mixture or heating directions, then wipe gently with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid gritty scrubbing that could damage the surface.

4. Add vinegar or lemon only if useful
If your manual permits it, vinegar or lemon juice can be added to the water for an optional steam-cleaning variation or odor freshening. Whirlpool suggests 1 tablespoon of vinegar in 1 cup of water; Whirlpool and KitchenAid also mention vinegar or lemon juice in water. These ingredients are not required: you still need to wipe the loosened soil away, rinse, and dry.
Clean the controls, turntable, and exterior carefully
Controls and waveguide cover
Keep liquid off the control panel by applying moisture to a cloth rather than spraying the appliance. Use a light touch around controls and the waveguide cover, which should remain in place.
