Pack your home in a sequence: sort and inventory first, box less-used belongings before daily essentials, protect and label each carton, then check the inventory and paperwork at pickup and delivery. Use closable boxes suited to their contents, keep heavy items in smaller cartons, and ask your mover before packing hazardous or restricted goods.
Plan the move before you pack
Walk through each room and decide what will move, be donated, sold, discarded, or travel with you. Make an inventory, with extra detail for valuable or fragile belongings. For an interstate move, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recommends comparing written estimates and included services, checking the mover’s registration, and understanding the paperwork and liability options. Its moving checklist also advises confirming pickup and delivery arrangements and how to contact the mover.
Set aside anything you need during the trip or immediately after arrival—such as medication, documents, keys, chargers, and a change of clothes—and keep it with you. Florida’s consumer moving guidance specifically recommends carrying immediate-use items rather than packing them.
Gather boxes and packing materials
Use closable cartons that suit the weight and shape of their contents. Gather packing paper or tissue, bubble wrap or another suitable protective wrap, tape, labels or a marker, and an inventory sheet or digital list. These supplies help organize and protect belongings; they do not guarantee that an item cannot break.

- Put heavy belongings in smaller boxes so the cartons are manageable.
- Follow any weight rating printed on a box; do not overload it.
- Use wrapping for fragile items and enough cushioning to limit movement inside the carton.
Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services guidance recommends wrapping fragile items and respecting the box’s stated weight rating. Its advice is practical guidance for moves within Florida, not a universal legal rule. See Moving Within Florida.
Pack room by room, starting with less-used items
Begin with items you will not need soon, such as seasonal belongings, décor, books, and guest-room contents. Pack one room or a clearly defined category at a time, keep contents reasonably consistent, and record a brief inventory entry for each box. Leave daily-use belongings until later, and keep your essentials bag or box under your control.

Before packing any paint, fuel, fireworks, gas cylinders, or automotive chemicals, ask the mover how they must be handled. Do not assume a household carton is an acceptable way to ship them. FMCSA’s federal guidance states: “Federal law forbids you to ship hazardous materials in your household goods boxes or luggage without informing your mover.” Its examples include paint and paint thinner, lighter fluid, gasoline, fireworks, oxygen bottles, propane cylinders, and automotive repair or maintenance chemicals. Read FMCSA’s guidance before requesting services and follow the mover’s instructions.
Protect and label every carton
- Wrap fragile objects individually or otherwise protect them with suitable material.
- Arrange contents so they cannot shift freely inside the carton.
- Close the carton securely with tape.
- Write the destination room and a brief contents description on the box. Mark fragile handling needs where useful.
- Number each box and add the number and contents to your inventory.
Room labels help the crew place cartons where they belong; a numbered inventory gives you a way to check what was loaded and delivered. Florida’s consumer guidance specifically recommends numbering boxes, keeping an inventory, and marking the room where each box should go.

Decide who will pack and confirm the mover’s terms
You can pack yourself or ask the mover about packing services. Compare the labor and material charges, who provides cartons, the time and work involved, how the mover handles owner-packed boxes, and the effect on documenting a damage claim. Neither choice is automatically cheaper or better protected: costs and terms depend on the mover and shipment.
FMCSA cautions that damage to owner-packed items may be harder to establish as a claim. Before packing, ask the mover in writing what it accepts, how it treats self-packed cartons, and what liability or valuation choices apply to your shipment. Interstate movers must offer liability coverage options, but the protection depends on the option selected and its terms; do not assume a particular choice covers every loss. FMCSA explains the issue on its Liability & Protection page. State rules for moves within one state can differ, so check your state or local consumer agency and your written agreement.

Coordinate pickup and check the delivery
Tell the crew which items are fragile, what should not be packed, what you want to arrive first, and which belongings you will carry yourself. Be present, or appoint someone you trust to answer questions and direct the crew. Review the mover’s inventory at pickup and record the condition accurately; FMCSA provides pickup guidance for household shipments.
- Before the truck leaves, check closets, cabinets, attic, basement, garage, and outbuildings.
- Keep copies of the estimate, inventory, bill of lading, and other signed documents.
- At delivery, compare what arrived with the inventory and note missing or damaged items on the inventory or delivery paperwork before signing.
For interstate shipments, FMCSA says written loss or damage claims must be filed within nine months after delivery. Keep records and follow the requirements in your mover’s documents. Consult the FMCSA checklist and its tips for a successful move for further move-day and documentation guidance.
