University of Illinois Extension specialist James Schmidt says it “will do nothing to control slugs once it is added to the soil.” Use habitat changes, handpicking, traps or barriers instead; reserve Epsom salt for a soil-test-confirmed magnesium deficiency.
Why Epsom salt is not a slug treatment
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, a source of magnesium and sulfate—not a general-purpose garden remedy. Illinois Extension directly rejects applying it to soil for slug control. No quantified evidence in the cited extension guidance establishes that it reliably repels or kills garden slugs when used this way. University of Illinois Extension
Adding it without need can create problems for plants and soil. Ask Extension advises using Epsom salt only when a soil test identifies magnesium deficiency; excess magnesium can interfere with calcium uptake, and spraying a solution on leaves may scorch them. Washington State University Extension also recommends professional soil testing before use and warns of salt injury and nutrient imbalance from excess magnesium sulfate. How to reduce snails and slugs in the garden
Snails and slugs favor cool, damp shelter and often feed at night. Combining habitat changes with direct control is more practical than relying on one remedy. UC Statewide IPM Program

Make hiding places and conditions less favorable
- Where practical, clear excess boards, stones, debris, weeds and other cool, damp hiding places.
- Thin dense growth where it can improve airflow.
- Water in the morning or at plant roots rather than keeping the soil surface wet into the evening.

Inspect and handpick after dark
Late-afternoon watering can draw slugs and snails out in an infested area. After dark, check plants and hiding places with a flashlight and remove pests by hand; UC IPM recommends rubber or latex gloves when handling them and provides disposal options. UC Statewide IPM Program

Set traps and check them regularly
UC IPM describes simple traps, including boards raised slightly on runners. Check and clear traps regularly. Beer or yeast traps attract pests only from a limited area and need replenishing, so they are best treated as one part of a broader approach rather than a garden-wide fix. UC Statewide IPM Program
Block routes with copper barriers
Copper tape or foil can deter pests from entering a container or bed when the barrier closes off their route. A vertical screen needs to extend below the soil surface so slugs cannot crawl underneath. Tarnish, heavy oxidation or debris can compromise a barrier, so check and maintain it. Use bait only if other steps are not enough
Iron-phosphate bait is an alternative described by extension and IPM guidance. Slugs may stop feeding after ingesting it, but can take up to seven days to die, according to the University of Minnesota Extension. Follow the specific product label and local rules, including directions for edible crops and precautions for pets. UC IPM warns that metaldehyde baits are particularly poisonous to dogs and cats. UC IPM recommends combining control methods rather than expecting any one measure to guarantee eradication. Choose based on whether you can enclose the area, how often you can inspect it, and any crop, pet or local restrictions that apply to bait.
