Cleaning removes dirt and germs; sanitizing reduces germs to levels considered safe; disinfecting kills germs on surfaces. For routine cleaning at home, soap or detergent and water are usually enough. Sanitize or disinfect when the situation calls for it, and use a product labeled for the surface and germ you need to address.
Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting: what each does

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says surface disinfectants face more rigorous effectiveness testing than surface sanitizers; some products carry both claims because they have been tested for both uses. The appropriate choice depends on the label and the situation, not a general ranking of product strength. EPA explains the product categories and claims.
Which should you use at home?
For ordinary household cleaning
Clean high-touch surfaces regularly, and clean other surfaces when visibly dirty or as needed. The CDC says sanitizing or disinfecting to reduce disease spread at home is likely unnecessary unless someone is sick or someone in the household is at higher risk. CDC household cleaning guidance is dated January 31, 2025.
For food-contact surfaces
For counters used to prepare food, clean first. If a surface has been contaminated by raw meat, poultry, or their juices, sanitize it with a suitable product according to its instructions. CDC also identifies food-contact surfaces after a natural disaster or emergency as a household sanitizing use case. A recalled-food situation may call for sanitizing the inside of the refrigerator.

Do not assume every sanitizer is suitable for every counter or that a sanitizer claim means the product kills viruses. Check that the label covers the intended surface and use.
When someone is sick or at higher risk
Add disinfection to cleaning when someone in the home is sick or a household member is at higher risk because of a weakened immune system. Use an EPA-registered disinfectant whose label covers the target surface and germ, or follow the specific bleach procedure described by the CDC. Follow all product directions. CDC’s household guidance covers these situations and safe use.

How to use a sanitizer or disinfectant correctly
- Clean first. Use soap or detergent and water to remove dirt and other impurities, which can make it harder for a chemical product to reach germs.
- Check the label. Confirm that the product is intended for the surface and the germ claim you need. Do not presume that a product labeled for one purpose or surface is suitable for another.
- Follow the directions. Use the specified dilution, if any, and keep the surface visibly wet for the full contact time on the label.
- Use the product safely. Follow any protective-equipment and ventilation directions. Do not mix cleaning products, and store them out of reach of children and pets.
Surface disinfectants are not for use on the body, food, or pets. Product claims and directions are specific: an EPA-registered household disinfectant spray is appropriate only for uses covered by its own label. Household routines do not replace facility procedures. For a workplace or other facility, CDC advises selecting a disinfectant for the specific harmful germ when known, checking that the surface is compatible, and following the product label and applicable facility requirements. CDC’s facility guidance addresses that setting.
