Amur maple (Acer ginnala, also classified as Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala) is a small, often multistemmed tree or large shrub. Look for opposite, three-lobed leaves with toothed edges and a longer central lobe; reddish paired winged fruits and scarlet fall color can help confirm it. Small seedlings may be pulled, but established plants can resprout after cutting, so plan to check the site again and follow local guidance before using herbicide.

How to identify Amur maple

Identify the plant from several features rather than relying on a single leaf. The University of Minnesota Extension and state agency guides describe a combination of leaf arrangement, shape, bark, flowers, and fruit that is more useful than any one trait.

Leaves

  • Leaves grow in opposite pairs on the twig.
  • Each leaf is simple, generally longer than it is wide, and has three shallow lobes.
  • The middle lobe is usually the longest. Leaf edges are toothed, often with smaller teeth along the larger teeth.
  • Leaves may turn bright red or scarlet in fall.

Stems, flowers, and fruit

Amur maple often grows as a broad-crowned shrub with several stems, though it can form a small tree. Young twigs are smooth and light-colored; mature bark develops faint vertical gray striations. In Minnesota, fragrant flowers appear in loose clusters with the young leaves in late spring. The paired winged fruits, called samaras, are often reddish and mature in late summer; their wings are close-set and may look nearly parallel.

When fruit is present, it can provide useful confirmation. Compare multiple leaves and inspect how they attach to the stem; do not identify a plant from one leaf alone. These traits are described by University of Minnesota Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

How to choose a removal method

Plant size, likelihood of resprouting, nearby desirable plants, and your ability to monitor the site all affect the choice. Agency guidance supports hand-pulling or cutting small plants and describes directed herbicide methods for larger or resprouting plants. It does not establish a universal homeowner success rate, cost, or labor estimate.

Plant or site condition Approach to consider Important qualification
Small seedling or sapling Pull by hand while the plant is small, where feasible, or cut it. Wisconsin DNR says saplings are easily pulled; Minnesota guidance includes pulling and cutting for small infestations. Check for remaining plants and later seedlings.
Larger woody plant or stump regrowth Consider a directed cut-stump treatment or another agency-described approach. Minnesota and Wisconsin agencies describe glyphosate or triclopyr cut-stump approaches; Minnesota also describes triclopyr basal-bark treatment. These are options in agency guidance, not a universal prescription or product endorsement.
Sensitive site, desirable vegetation nearby, or extensive infestation Ask a local extension service, land manager, or qualified applicator for site-specific advice. Choice and application depend on the setting, local rules, and the exact product label.

How to remove Amur maple

For small seedlings and saplings

  1. Where the plant is small enough to remove by hand, pull it out while feasible. Wisconsin DNR identifies hand-pulling as an option for saplings; Minnesota guidance also lists pulling and cutting for small infestations.
  2. If pulling is impractical, cut the small plant. Avoid assuming that cutting alone will prevent regrowth, particularly as the plant becomes established.
  3. Return to the area and look for resprouts and new seedlings, especially if plants have produced seed.

For larger or resprouting plants

Cutting an established plant can be followed by stump regrowth. Minnesota and Wisconsin agency guidance describes cut-stump herbicide treatments, and Minnesota also describes basal-bark treatment. The appropriate method depends on the plant and site; follow the exact current product label and local rules. Do not let a general description substitute for label directions or local advice.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture directs readers to University of Minnesota Extension or a certified landscape-care expert for specific herbicide recommendations.

Monitor after removal

Check the site for regrowth from cut plants and for new seedlings, then address them as needed. Minnesota Department of Agriculture guidance recommends monitoring and additional treatments as necessary. A one-time cut should not be treated as proof that an established plant is gone.

Why local rules matter

Amur maple is native to parts of eastern Asia and has been introduced in North America. Minnesota and Wisconsin agencies describe it escaping cultivation and behaving invasively in parts of the northern United States. Its status and applicable rules vary by location, so check current local requirements before planting, moving, or treating it.

Minnesota classifies Amur maple as specially regulated and requires sellers to attach this label: “Amur maple should only be planted in areas where the seedlings will be controlled or eradicated by mowing or other means. Amur maple should not be planted closer than 100 yards from natural areas.” That 100-yard instruction is Minnesota’s seller-label requirement, not a rule that applies everywhere. See the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s current Amur maple guidance for state information and verify rules in your own jurisdiction.
