There is no evidence-backed air-conditioning brand that is best for every home. For U.S. homeowners comparing central AC, the better choice is the specific system a qualified local contractor can correctly size, match, install, service, and warrant. Compare model-level performance and the written quote—not just the name on the cabinet.
How to compare air-conditioning brands
Start with the proposed system and the contractor who will install it. Carrier’s selection guide relays Air Conditioning Contractors of America advice to use load calculations and manufacturer performance data rather than a simple square-foot rule. Panasonic’s HVAC guidance similarly notes that the right system depends on the project, home, design, installation, parts support, filtration, and humidity control. These are useful selection criteria, not independent evidence that either brand is the best.
- System fit and sizing: Ask how the contractor calculated the home’s heating and cooling loads and which matched indoor and outdoor equipment is included. A rough area-based estimate alone does not establish correct sizing.
- Installation and commissioning: Find out what startup checks and commissioning procedures the installer will perform, and whether the contractor regularly services the proposed equipment.
- Efficiency and cost: Compare each model’s current SEER2 rating, the installed price, and estimated operating costs for your climate, electricity rate, and expected use.
- Written warranty: Check parts and labor coverage, registration deadlines, exclusions, and who handles service. Warranty terms can differ by model and registration.
- Serviceability: Ask about nearby dealer coverage, technician familiarity, and parts availability for the specific model.
- Comfort and features: Compare staging or variable-speed options, sound, controls, humidity management, and any indoor-air-quality features that matter in your home.
Compare current efficiency ratings—not old SEER figures
For cooling, compare the system’s SEER2 rating; for a heat pump’s heating efficiency, compare HSPF2 as well. The U.S. Department of Energy explains these measures and its current testing procedure on its central air-conditioning and heat-pump guidance. DOE says mandatory testing to the amended Appendix M1 began July 7, 2025, and the procedure incorporates AHRI 210/240-2024. Do not treat an older SEER figure as directly interchangeable with a SEER2 figure.
ENERGY STAR status also needs current context. The EPA’s central air-conditioner sunset page states: “On February 1, 2026, EPA sunset the ENERGY STAR specification for central air conditioners.” That means the former central-AC specification is no longer a current qualification to use when comparing brands. Efficiency still matters: compare published equipment ratings and applicable requirements for the system being quoted.

Why savings depend on your location and assumptions
A higher-efficiency system can reduce energy use, but its value depends on local climate, electricity prices, operating hours, equipment cost, and how long the system is used. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program illustrates the effect of region with modeled lifetime energy-cost savings for a 36,000 Btu/h system:

These are modeled examples from FEMP guidance updated in December 2024, expressed in 2023 dollars. They use the guidance’s climate-region, operating-hour, electricity-price, efficiency-level, and service-life assumptions; they are not predictions or guarantees of a household’s savings. What the evidence does—and does not—say about brand reliability
The available sources do not establish comparable, independent long-term failure rates across air-conditioning brands or local contractor outcomes. A warranty length, manufacturer claim, editorial rating, or collection of homeowner anecdotes cannot by itself prove that one brand is more reliable. For a practical comparison, focus on written warranty terms, local service coverage, parts access, and the installer’s familiarity with the exact equipment.
This Old House reports that its brand cost figures draw on a 2026 HVAC survey of 1,000 homeowners who repaired or replaced HVAC equipment in the previous five years. That describes the basis of its published cost figures; it is not a market-wide reliability measure or an independent failure-rate ranking.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote
- What load calculation did you use, and can I see the proposed system’s matched-equipment performance data?
- Which exact indoor and outdoor models are included, and what are their SEER2 ratings? If it is a heat pump, what is its HSPF2 rating?
- What installation and commissioning checks are included, and who will perform them?
- What parts and labor coverage applies to these models, what registration deadline or exclusions apply, and who handles warranty service?
- How readily can your company obtain parts and service this model locally?
- How did you estimate annual operating cost, and which climate, electricity-rate, and usage assumptions did you use?
If you are also buying an air filter, confirm its dimensions and make sure its type is allowed by the equipment documentation or recommended by the installer. A filter is an equipment-compatibility question, not a reason to choose one AC brand over another.
