Most cold-damaged plants should not be cut back or replaced immediately. Check the soil and water if the root zone is dry and unfrozen, leave damaged foliage in place while another freeze is possible, and wait for new growth to show what is still alive. Recovery depends on the plant, its condition, and how cold and how long it was exposed.
What to do immediately after a freeze
- Resist a major cleanup. Limp, shriveled, brown, or black leaves can look alarming, but damage may take days or weeks to become clear. A damaged leaf does not prove the whole plant is dead.
- Check the soil before watering. If the root zone is dry and not frozen, water appropriately for the plant and soil. Moisture can support recovery during dry spells, particularly for recently planted trees and shrubs. Do not waterlogged the soil.
- Skip emergency fertilizer. Fertilizer will not repair injured tissue, and early application can encourage tender growth that may be damaged by another frost. Return to the plant’s normal seasonal schedule when active growth and conditions make it appropriate.
These steps reflect guidance from University of Florida IFAS Extension and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
How to tell whether a plant is still alive
Look for new growth
Wait and observe over the next several days or weeks. Surviving plants may push new growth from stems, roots, or crowns. Some injury becomes apparent gradually; Iowa State Extension notes that dead conifer shoot tips may take 2–3 weeks to become evident.
Check woody stems carefully
On a woody plant, a small scratch through the outer bark can help assess a stem. Green tissue beneath the bark is a sign that the sampled portion is alive; brown or black tissue indicates injury. Scratch only a small area and sample sparingly. One injured branch does not establish that the entire plant has died.

Cold injury varies with species, growth stage, exposure duration, plant age, and local weather. A particular temperature is not a universal survival threshold for all plants.
When and how to prune cold-damaged plants
Leave damaged leaves and stems in place while frost remains possible: they can help insulate living tissue during another freeze. Once frost danger has passed and new growth makes the live portions easier to identify, remove only branches or shoots confirmed dead. Cut back to living tissue or an appropriate branch point, following the plant’s pruning needs where known. Avoid removing whole plants based only on their post-freeze appearance.

What recovery may look like by plant type
| Plant type | What to expect | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Established trees and shrubs | Many produce replacement foliage within weeks. | Water during dry periods, especially for trees and shrubs planted within the past 3–5 years. Wait to prune branch tips until they are confirmed dead. |
| Conifers and evergreens | New shoots can be injured, and damage may take 2–3 weeks to show clearly. | After confirming a shoot is dead and frost danger has passed, prune to a live bud or side branch. |
| Perennials | Many established perennials recover; badly injured plants may regrow from roots or crowns within weeks and may be smaller that season. | Wait for regrowth before deciding whether to remove the plant. |
| Warm-season vegetables | Iowa State Extension says lightly damaged plants may recover in 7–14 days; substantial injury may make replacement preferable. | Assess the extent of damage and whether the plant is producing new growth before deciding to replant. |
| Potatoes | Even severely damaged tops can be followed by new growth in 10–14 days, according to Iowa State Extension. | Do not replant solely because cold damaged the aboveground shoots. |
The time frames in the table are Iowa State University Extension and Outreach guidance reviewed in April 2026; they are not guarantees for every cultivar, climate, or freeze event.
When to replace a plant
There is no single waiting period that works for every plant or climate. Consider the plant type, how much tissue was damaged, whether new growth appears, and whether the roots or crown may have survived. Some severely damaged warm-season vegetables are better replanted; established trees, shrubs, and many perennials commonly recover. If the plant is valuable or its condition remains unclear, identify the species and ask your local extension service for advice suited to your area.

How to protect plants from another cold night
Before a future freeze, use a suitable frost cloth or plant cover to protect vulnerable plants, following local recommendations for how to position it. A cover can help prevent additional cold injury; it cannot reverse damage the plant has already sustained. Keep damaged growth in place until frost risk has passed, then reassess.
