A bamboo shishi-odoshi is a small fountain whose hollow scoop fills, tips, empties and knocks against a crosspiece as it returns. It can add movement and sound to a garden, but it should not be treated as a proven way to keep wildlife out: the project guide describes a traditional deer-scarer purpose, while the sources here provide no controlled trial or success rate for this DIY design. A fountain can also make water available to animals.
How the bamboo fountain works
Andrew Terranova’s Make: guide explains shishi-odoshi as “deer scarer.” The mechanism is a pivoting, hollow bamboo scoop rather than a continuously running spout alone:
- Water travels through tubing to a spout and trickles into the scoop.
- As the scoop fills, its weight shifts until it tips and pours the water out.
- The emptied scoop swings back and strikes a lower crosspiece, making the characteristic knock.
The cycle depends on the scoop’s balance, pivot location, water flow and where the stream lands. Bamboo pieces are irregular, so the guide’s measurements are examples, not a universal cutting plan.
What the Make: project requires
Terranova describes a moderate-difficulty weekend project. The guide lists bamboo, a submersible pump rated at 80 gallons per hour (GPH) or less, a basin, clear vinyl tubing, a 3/16-inch steel pivot rod, rope and PVC pipe. The tools listed include a handsaw, drill and bits (Forstner bits or hole saws), bench vise, hacksaw, hammer, pliers, file, ruler, level and pencil or marker. Its small example used an 8-inch-wide planter and 6 or 8 linear feet of bamboo; a larger, 3-foot example used about 20 feet total. These are project examples, not required dimensions or experimentally optimized proportions. The guide’s $50–$150 estimate is historical: it appeared in a project first published in 2015 and updated in 2022, so it is not a current materials quote.
Key parts to plan
- Water route: An upright carries tubing to a spout. The guide uses 1/2-inch tubing and calls for a low-flow setup.
- Frame: Uprights and a crossbeam support the spout and rocking scoop.
- Hollow scoop: Choose bamboo with node placement that leaves room for the water chamber and movement. A node can form the chamber’s bottom; other internal obstructions may need clearing.
- Pivot and knocker: The scoop rocks on the 3/16-inch steel rod. A lower crosspiece receives its return swing.
- Basin and pump: Fit the pump to the basin and tubing, and plan for splash. Test the assembly outdoors.
Tune the flow and balance
Start with the pump’s flow as low as practical. The stream should land in the scoop, fill it gradually, and allow it to tip and reset. The project guide recommends adjusting the spout’s length and angle and the scoop’s position rather than assuming a fixed geometry will work with every piece of bamboo.

If the scoop does not cycle
- Water overshoots: Adjust the spout angle or scoop position so the stream falls inside the chamber; reduce flow if needed.
- The scoop fills but will not dump: Its back may be too heavy. Trim the back gradually and retest.
- It dumps but does not return: The front may be too heavy. Trim the front or add weight at the back, then test again.
- It cycles inconsistently: Check that the frame and pivot are level and refine the flow and geometry in small increments.
A bamboo-fountain vendor also recommends leveling its product and reducing pump pressure when water overshoots or the scoop fails to cycle; that is product-specific troubleshooting, not independent validation of this DIY design. See Bamboo Dick’s assembly guidance.
Will it keep deer or other wildlife away?
The design has a traditional deer-scarer role, but the available sources do not establish that this DIY fountain reliably excludes deer—or any other scavenging animal. A repeated knock may startle an animal, yet deterrents can lose effect when wildlife becomes accustomed to them. The University of Florida IFAS advises starting promptly, varying hazing tactics to reduce habituation, and combining sensory approaches. Its guidance also emphasizes choosing deterrents for the target species and type of damage: UF/IFAS nuisance-wildlife deterrent guidance.

There is a practical complication: the feature supplies water. Oregon State University Extension’s response about deer drinking from a fountain says accessible open fresh water is likely to attract deer, particularly when other open water has disappeared or dried up. It suggests turning off the water if the fountain is mainly decorative, limiting deer access with 1/2-inch mesh hardware cloth if the design permits, or fencing around the yard or feature; it cautions that effective exclusion requires a well-designed fence. These are options for that setup, not universal prescriptions. Read the Extension response. Before building around a deterrent, identify which animal is causing the problem and what it is doing—browsing plants, raiding food, or visiting for water. A fountain may be worthwhile as a garden feature, but for preventing damage, select locally appropriate methods for the species and situation. Consider whether a measure physically excludes access or merely startles the animal, how readily it can become accustomed to it, and the upkeep it requires. Local extension guidance can help match the response to the animal and the site.
