How Greg Davill Added Wi-Fi and Home Assistant Control to a Wired Daikin AC

Greg Davill’s DIY retrofit links a P1/P2-connected ducted Daikin AC to Home Assistant with an ESP32-C3, MAX22088 interface and ESPHome. It is a project-specific design, not a universal adapter.

Greg Davill’s project connects a ducted Daikin reverse-cycle air conditioner to Home Assistant through the wired P1/P2 bus used by its wall controller. An ESP32-C3, a MAX22088 transceiver breakout and custom ESPHome firmware provide Wi-Fi, climate controls and status reporting. It is a documented retrofit for Davill’s particular system—not a universal Daikin adapter or a plug-in consumer product.

What the retrofit does

Davill wanted to bring air-conditioning control and monitoring into Home Assistant for remote operation and automations, including timers, solar-aware thermostat behavior and switching based on whether he was home. Because his ducted unit used a hardwired wall controller, an infrared blaster intended to imitate a handheld remote was not the right interface for his installation.

Instead, the project communicates over the controller’s two-wire P1/P2 connection. The ESP32-C3 and MAX22088-based interface connect the bus to custom firmware integrated with ESPHome. ESPHome’s Climate component exposes the air conditioner to Home Assistant, while Davill’s configuration also uses Wi-Fi logging and over-the-air firmware updates. Davill’s project write-up describes the design and implementation.

How the P1/P2 interface was developed

Davill describes P1/P2 as a two-wire connection carrying power and modulated data. In his particular installation, he measured about 15 V at the wall controller and discusses signaling at 9600 bps and the bus cycle timing. These are observations from his system, not safe or universal wiring specifications for other Daikin units.

His first software effort was a standalone ESP32-IDF project. He later ported its RMT signaling code to ESPHome, adapting it to the substantially changed RMT API between ESP-IDF v5 and the v4 version used by ESPHome in his implementation.

The hardware also changed during development. An initial design using an MM1192 transceiver and power drawn from the bus did not work as intended. Davill moved to a MAX22088-based approach after finding reference schematics for a bus-powered design, and describes adjusting AC-coupling capacitors on the breakout board to suit the signaling. The account is prototype and reverse-engineering documentation; it does not establish that the circuit has been validated across Daikin models.

What Home Assistant and Apple Home can control

In Home Assistant, the ESPHome Climate component provides a climate entity that accepts commands and publishes status updates. Davill then used Home Assistant’s HomeKit integration to make the system available in Apple Home. Heat, Cool and Auto worked in his installation.

Fan Only did not map to the climate controls as he wanted. His workaround was a separate template fan that redirected fan-control messages to the air conditioner. That detail matters if you expect every function on a wall controller to appear as a standard climate control: the reported mode support is specific to his configuration.

Check compatibility before choosing an approach

The project concerns one ducted reverse-cycle Daikin system with a P1/P2-connected wall controller. It should not be taken as evidence that every Daikin split or ducted unit exposes the same bus, uses the same signaling, or can work with this design.

Start by identifying the exact indoor unit and controller, along with your region and the features you need. Home Assistant’s official Daikin integration documentation lists supported product and controller families with regional and model distinctions, including BRP069A, BRP072C, BRP084C, BRP15B61 and SKYFi-related cases. Check the current documentation against your equipment rather than inferring compatibility from the brand name or a similar-looking controller.

Daikin Wi-Fi controller and official Home Assistant integration Depends on the exact controller, indoor unit and region; consult the integration’s supported-family list. Follow the controller and integration requirements for the specific supported model; do not assume all routes are local or cloud-free. Confirm the manufacturer controller fits your system and verify which Home Assistant features it supports.
P1P2MQTT assembled hardware Davill says this alternative would have worked with his AC; that is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check the current product documentation for its integration and connectivity details. May avoid building the transceiver hardware yourself, but availability, model fit and maintenance details need current verification.

Davill reports that the Daikin Wi-Fi controller’s fit for his own unit was unclear to him at the time, and he viewed its Home Assistant route as app-oriented and internet-dependent. Treat that as his assessment for his system, not a statement about every Daikin controller or current integration behavior. He does not plan to sell assembled versions of his design and points readers to P1P2MQTT hardware as an alternative.

What to establish before attempting a retrofit

  • Identify the equipment: Record the indoor-unit and wall-controller model numbers, region and controller connection. Confirm whether the setup actually uses P1/P2.
  • Choose based on your requirements: Compare verified model compatibility, local versus vendor-cloud operation, supported modes and status reporting, and whether you want to build electronics and firmware or use assembled hardware.
  • Assess the electrical and software work: This project involves interfacing with a powered communications bus and adapting signaling, not simply attaching a generic ESP32 board. Davill’s measured bus voltage and timing are specific to his installation.
  • Plan for upkeep: Davill’s ESPHome configuration supports Wi-Fi logging and OTA updates. For other routes, check the relevant product or integration documentation for supported updates and ongoing maintenance.

The detailed circuit, firmware context and project-specific observations are in Davill’s original write-up. It is useful as a technical reference, but not a substitute for confirming compatibility and safe interfacing on a different air conditioner.
