For nearby control from an Android phone, a practical starting point is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): the phone discovers and connects to the ESP32, and the ESP32 exposes a service for commands and device status. This works for local control; BLE alone does not provide control over the internet.

How the Android-to-ESP32 connection works

Android can act as the BLE central: it scans for nearby devices, connects, discovers services and exchanges data. The ESP32 acts as a peripheral by advertising and providing a GATT server. The two sides need to agree on a service UUID, characteristic UUIDs, allowed operations and the format of commands and status messages. Android’s BLE overview describes the central role and app APIs; Espressif’s ESP-IDF BLE API guide documents the ESP-IDF Bluetooth LE APIs.

BLE is intended for small exchanges such as “turn on,” “turn off” and “report current state.” It is not an internet remote-control path: controlling the device from outside Bluetooth range requires a separate network design.

Choose an ESP32 Bluetooth stack and verify the chip

“ESP32” refers to a family of chips, not one uniform Bluetooth specification. Check the exact chip variant and the ESP-IDF target before choosing a stack or relying on a feature. Espressif’s Bluetooth overview distinguishes these options:

ESP-WROOM-32 ESP32 ESP-32S Development Board 2.4GHz Dual-Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Dual Cores Microcontroller Processor Integrated with Antenna RF AMP Filter AP STA Compatible with Arduino IDE (3PCS)
  • 2.4GHz Dual Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Development Board
  • Support LWIP protocol, Freertos
  • SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
  • Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
  • ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
Stack When it fits Documented trade-off
ESP-NimBLE A BLE-only application Uses less heap and flash than Bluedroid, according to Espressif; does not support Classic Bluetooth.
ESP-Bluedroid An application that needs BLE and Classic Bluetooth Supports both modes, with higher resource use than NimBLE according to Espressif.

These are stack-level distinctions, not a guarantee that every ESP32-family chip supports the same Bluetooth features. Consult the feature information for the selected chip series and the documentation for the ESP-IDF release you are using.

Design a small, explicit GATT interface

Give the device function a GATT service, then define characteristics for command input and observable state. For each characteristic, decide whether the app may read, write or subscribe to notifications. Keep the payload and behavior unambiguous before implementing either side.

  • Commands: specify valid values, such as an on/off command, and what the device does with an invalid or incomplete payload.
  • State: decide how the app learns the actual device state, for example by reading a state characteristic or receiving notifications when it changes.
  • Errors and reconnects: define how the app recognizes a rejected command, a lost connection or a device that is unavailable.

Do not assume that a successful Bluetooth write means the physical output reached its intended state. Where the application needs confirmation, report the device’s resulting state separately.

Build and test the local-control path

  1. Choose the board. Confirm its chip variant, ESP-IDF target and programming interface. Start with a development board rather than wiring a household load directly.
  2. Select the stack. Use ESP-NimBLE for a BLE-only design, or consider ESP-Bluedroid if Classic Bluetooth is also required and supported by the chosen chip.
  3. Implement advertising and a GATT server. Begin with Espressif’s BLE examples and verify that the phone can discover the device before troubleshooting commands.
  4. Implement Android discovery and connection. Check Bluetooth availability, request the permissions needed for the app’s operations, scan, connect, discover the service and characteristics, then exchange data.
  5. Test a low-risk output first. Espressif’s BLE getting-started tutorial demonstrates a phone-interactive development-board example that includes LED control.
  6. Test failure cases. Check what the app displays when Bluetooth is off or unavailable, permission is denied, the device is not found, or the connection drops during use.

Request Android permissions for the app’s actual operations

For apps targeting Android 12 (API level 31) or later, Android’s Bluetooth permissions guidance calls for runtime permissions according to the BLE operations used:

Hosyond 2Pack ESP-WROOM-32 ESP32 Development Board WiFi Bluetooth CP2102 Dual Core 2.4GHz Microcontroller Compatible with Arduino IDE, NodeMCU
  • The main body of the module is ESP-WROOM-32 module, and the peripheral uses the USB serial port chip CP2102 to expand the micro USB interface, which can be directly debugged by a USB connected computer, and the data transmission is fast and stable.
  • It has power indicator (red light) and working status indicator (blue light) on it, so you can know the status of the module at any time.
  • There are two touch buttons, one is reset, the other is enable module to enter the halberd program mode. In addition, the pins on both sides of the development board are convenient for developers to connect and use.
  • Small size: ESP-32 dual-mode module is compact and easy to embed into your device, it is convenient to use for you.And it is compatible with Arduino IDE.
  • In addition, the module supports for NodeMCU and other development environments, which expands the range of its resources available and greatly improves the ease of learning and development. Of course, it can also be widely used in Internet of things occasions.
  • BLUETOOTH_SCAN to search for nearby devices.
  • BLUETOOTH_CONNECT to communicate with paired devices.
  • BLUETOOTH_ADVERTISE if the phone itself must be discoverable.

Request only the permissions the app needs. Location-related declarations depend on whether scan results are used to derive physical location and on compatibility requirements. Android notes that using neverForLocation can filter some BLE beacons from scan results. Apps targeting Android 11 or lower follow the older Bluetooth and location-permission guidance on the same Android page.

For supported use cases, Android’s Companion Device Manager can provide a pairing flow in which system UI selects a device on the app’s behalf without location permissions. Whether it fits depends on the desired discovery and connection experience.

Plan output hardware and safety separately from Bluetooth

A GPIO-driven LED is a useful first demonstration, but it does not validate a relay or appliance-control circuit. The output stage must suit the load and installation. Before moving beyond a low-risk prototype, check the load’s electrical characteristics, switching type, logic compatibility, isolation, enclosure and failure behavior, and use appropriately qualified help for hazardous or mains-voltage work. No particular relay module or load is established as compatible here.

Decide what security and range mean for the product

BLE provides a nearby wireless link, not a complete authorization or safety system. Decide how pairing or bonding will work, which commands an authorized phone may send, what happens after disconnection, and what safe default state the output should take. Android warns that BLE-paired data can be accessible to other apps on the phone, so sensitive information needs protection at the application layer. If control from beyond Bluetooth range is required, design and secure a separate network path rather than describing BLE itself as remote access.
