The right setup may be as simple as rearranging a rod and adding a shelf; bins, hooks, door organizers, closet systems, and professional help are optional—not the starting point.
1. Decide what the closet needs to do
Before moving anything, identify what you want to reach easily and what can be stored higher up or somewhere else. Think about the closet’s main job—everyday clothing, shoes, coats, linens, or a mix—and the belongings that must fit there.
You can use those answers to sketch simple zones, such as frequently used items at a convenient height and occasional-use items above or elsewhere. That is a planning aid, not a universal layout rule: the best arrangement depends on your closet and what you store.
2. Empty the closet and sort what you own
Take everything out so you can see both the closet and its contents. Ashley Murphy, an organizing expert and NEAT Method co-founder, gives the same first step in Martha Stewart’s six-step closet guide: “The very first thing you need to do when you start to organize your closet is take everything out of the space.” Guides from The Home Depot and The Container Store also begin with clearing the closet.

As you sort, make practical groups:
- Keep here: Items that belong in this closet and that you intend to use.
- Store elsewhere: Items you want to keep but do not need in this closet.
- Donate or pass on: Usable items you no longer want, if a suitable local option is available.
- Discard: Items that are no longer usable. Check local textile-reuse or disposal options where relevant.
Use your own judgment rather than treating a fixed “keep only what you used in the past year” rule as a universal standard. A special-occasion garment or seasonal item may have a place even if you rarely reach for it.
3. Measure the space and inventory what remains
Measure before you shop. Note the closet’s usable width, depth, and height, along with the dimensions of any area where you may add storage. If you are considering a door organizer, check the door’s clearance and how it opens. Record obstacles such as existing shelves, rods, trim, or an awkward corner.

Then count or group the items that need homes: hanging garments, folded clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and other belongings. This turns “I need more storage” into a more useful plan, such as needing space for a particular group of folded items or a certain number of pairs of shoes. Martha Stewart recommends measuring and taking inventory, while The Container Store includes a tape measure and notebook in its small-closet project materials.
4. Choose storage to fit the closet and its contents
There is no single set of organizers that suits every closet. Compare options by how well they fit your measurements and belongings, how easy items will be to see and reach, how much installation they require, whether they use vertical or door space, and whether you can adjust them later. These are practical decision criteria, not results from comparative product testing.

Walk-in and reach-in closets may call for different layouts; This Old House’s closet guide considers both. An over-the-door shoe organizer is another possibility for an entry or coat closet, but it only makes sense if the door and stored shoes fit the arrangement.
5. Install thoughtfully and leave room to use the closet
Follow the selected product’s installation directions and check that the chosen location works for the wall or door. Do not put hooks where clothing can easily snag; The Home Depot specifically cautions against that placement. The available guidance does not establish a general load rating or installation standard, so use the instructions for the actual product rather than assuming all hardware or surfaces are interchangeable.

After installing or repositioning storage, put items back according to the plan and confirm that you can open doors, reach what you use often, and remove bins or shoes without shifting everything else.

A closet arrangement does not have to be permanent. The Martha Stewart guide quotes an unnamed expert describing organization as fluid rather than fixed: “Remember that closet organization is fluid—it isn’t written in stone.” Revisit the setup when your wardrobe, household needs, or storage priorities change; a small adjustment may be more useful than replacing the whole system.
