To find a community garden, start with the American Community Gardening Association’s Find a Garden map, then check regional directories and your city or county Parks and Recreation department. Treat every listing as a lead—not confirmation that the garden is open, has plots available, or allows drop-in visits. Contact the operator before you go or apply.
Start with the national garden map
The American Community Gardening Association (ACGA) Find a Garden map is a useful first stop for locations in the United States and Canada. Select a numbered marker near the area you are interested in, then zoom in to narrow the location. ACGA also recommends checking with local community gardening organizations, Cooperative Extension offices, and Parks and Recreation departments.
A map entry does not guarantee that its information is current or that a garden has space. ACGA notes that submitted garden information can take time to sync to the map, so use the listing to identify a possible site and verify details with the operator.
Look for regional and local directories
Search for a directory specific to your city, county, or region. These listings may include gardens that are not easy to find through a national map, along with locally relevant contacts. For example, NC State Extension’s community-garden directory, updated June 19, 2026, points readers to ACGA and other resources. A directory’s regional focus can make it useful, but it does not confirm that an individual garden currently has openings.

Check the garden operator or local government
Once you have a possible location, look for the garden’s own website or the city or county Parks and Recreation page. Municipal pages may publish an address, hours, plot terms, rules, and contact details. For instance, San José’s Discovery Community Garden page lists program information for that specific garden. Its terms should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

If you cannot find a direct contact, ask a local gardening organization, Cooperative Extension office, or Parks and Recreation department whether it knows who manages the site.

Not every community garden offers the same way to take part. Before choosing a site, compare the practical details that matter to you:

- Listing freshness: Check for a directory update date, then confirm the details with the operator.
These are questions to ask, not features every garden offers. Application windows, costs, access rules, and plot availability are set locally and can change.

- What eligibility requirements, fees, or seasonal dates apply?
- Who should I contact about volunteering or other ways to participate?
- Are there rules or access arrangements I should know before arriving?
Wait for confirmation before traveling if access is unclear. A listed garden may be private, closed to casual visitors, or operating under rules that are not shown in a directory.

A shared garden is not necessarily open for unrestricted use. Do not enter restricted areas, use an unassigned plot, or harvest another gardener’s produce without permission. Follow posted signs and ask the organizer what visitors may do; the garden’s local rules govern.
