Leonardo da Vinci’s sawmill design uses water power to drive a reciprocating saw and automatically feed a log toward the blade. A later museum model makes the mechanism tangible, while a modern replica attempt shows how difficult it can be to build and tune the linked parts. These are distinct things: a Renaissance design, a 2010 reconstruction, and a present-day experiment.
How does Leonardo da Vinci’s hydraulic saw work?
The design, attributed by Museo Leonardiano to Leonardo and recorded in Codex Atlanticus, folio 1078 recto, was intended to saw large trunks into planks while reducing manual labor. It is a water-powered machine, not a hand-operated saw or a modern industrial sawmill.
Its operation depends on linked mechanisms: water supplies rotary motion, a crank system turns that into the saw’s up-and-down stroke, and a synchronized feed mechanism advances the trunk to keep it against the blade. Museo Leonardiano’s hydraulic saw record describes the design and the museum’s model.
1. Water turns the paddlewheel
A water channel drives a paddlewheel. The wheel provides the machine’s rotary input; it does not move the saw blade directly.

2. A crankshaft drives the blade
A crankshaft system converts the wheel’s rotation into the vertical blade’s reciprocating movement—the repeated rise and fall that makes the cut.
3. A pawl-and-ratchet feed advances the log
In parallel with the blade motion, a synchronized pawl engages a ratchet. As the wheel turns, this mechanism winds a rope onto a drum connected to the log trolley. The rope gradually draws the trolley and trunk forward, maintaining contact with the saw.
What is the museum model, and how does it differ from Leonardo’s drawing?
The drawing is evidence of a historical design concept. The physical machine at Museo Leonardiano is a later reconstruction, not a surviving machine made by Leonardo. The museum says its model was made in 2010 by the University of Florence engineering department and Etruria Musei.

| Artifact | Status and evidence | What can be observed |
|---|---|---|
| Leonardo’s design | Design attributed to Leonardo and associated with Codex Atlanticus, folio 1078 recto, according to Museo Leonardiano. | The proposed arrangement of waterwheel, blade drive, and trolley feed. |
| Museo Leonardiano model | Physical reconstruction made in 2010 by the University of Florence engineering department and Etruria Musei; museum collection record. | Varnished wood and iron; 98 cm wide, 87 cm high, and 61 cm deep. Displayed at Counts Guidi’s castle within Museo Leonardiano. |
The model’s materials, dimensions, and location describe that museum object; they should not be read as specifications for Leonardo’s original design.

A separate modern build by How To Make Everything was covered by Al Williams in Hackaday on September 11, 2023. The feature describes five main pieces—support, waterwheel, saw, crank mechanism, and sled—and reports that the builders encountered difficulties with the waterwheel and that the machine ran more slowly than expected. Read the Hackaday feature.
That outcome is useful as a practical illustration of the challenge, not as a definitive test of Leonardo’s design. A single replica’s results do not establish how the historical machine would have performed with different construction, materials, water flow, or operating conditions. No reliable output, speed, or efficiency figure is established for the saw in the cited accounts.

Why is the mechanism challenging to reproduce?
The design integrates several tasks that must work together: delivering rotary power from water, converting rotation into a controlled blade stroke, and timing the trolley’s incremental feed. A problem in one part can affect the rest. The modern attempt’s reported waterwheel difficulty and slower-than-expected operation illustrate the practical tuning challenge without proving that the underlying design was unworkable.
For a builder, the project is substantial woodworking and metalworking rather than a simple saw assembly. The available account does not provide a comprehensive, verified tool list or a complete set of build specifications, so it should not be treated as a ready-to-follow construction plan.
