The right choice depends on whether you want brightness as well as color temperature to change, and on what your lights actually support.
Choose the approach that fits your lights and schedule
| Approach | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Flux (built in) | Changes the color temperature of configured lights that are on according to time of day. Home Assistant describes brighter daytime light and a fade toward warmer red/orange tones at night. | You want time-based color-temperature changes without installing a custom component. |
| Adaptive Lighting (custom) | Adapts brightness and color based on sun position and time, and allows manual control. It is installed through HACS. | You want brightness adaptation and additional controls, and are comfortable using a community-maintained component. |
| Your own automations | Home Assistant light actions can set supported brightness and color-temperature values and transitions; Sun events can trigger schedules around local sunrise and sunset. | You want direct control over timing, transitions, and automation logic and are willing to maintain it. |
Flux is the simplest built-in route if adjusting color temperature is enough. Choose Adaptive Lighting or custom automations if brightness changes are important. Home Assistant’s Flux documentation describes its purpose as changing light temperature through the day in a way similar to the Flux computer app: Flux integration documentation.
Check light compatibility before building a schedule
Home Assistant exposes different controls depending on the light and its device integration. A bulb may support brightness, color temperature, RGB color, or only some of these. Inspect the target light entity and confirm its available features before relying on a schedule. See Home Assistant’s Light documentation.
- For dimming: the light must expose brightness control.
- For warmer and cooler whites: look for adjustable white color temperature.
- For RGB-based color changes: confirm the integration exposes RGB control and that the chosen component supports the light.
A dimmable tunable-white smart bulb is a practical starting point for this kind of setup; RGB capability may also suit some configurations. Verify the exact model’s Home Assistant integration and exposed features rather than assuming that all bulbs from a brand behave alike.

Set the home location for sun-based schedules
Home Assistant’s Sun integration calculates sunrise, sunset, dawn, and dusk from the configured home location. Those events are available to automations as triggers and conditions, which lets a schedule follow local daylight instead of relying only on fixed clock times. Check the location in Home Assistant’s configuration and see the Sun integration documentation before building sun-based rules.
Set up Flux for time-based color temperature
Flux is a built-in Home Assistant integration. Configure it for the lights you want to affect; it changes color temperature according to time of day and applies to configured lights that are on. Its documented behavior focuses on color temperature, so it may not meet a goal of automatically changing brightness as well.

- Timer and Schedule: Applying the ceiling fan light bulbs to your daily routine now is easier than ever, with timer function and modes like Sunrise & Sunset, you can set your bulbs to brighten when you wake up, and gradually dim when you fall asleep.
For setup details and current configuration options, use the Flux integration page. Check the selected entities’ supported features first: a schedule cannot create color-temperature control that a light does not expose.
Use Adaptive Lighting when you want brightness adaptation
Adaptive Lighting is a community-maintained custom component installed through HACS. Its project documentation lists brightness as required, color-temperature support as preferred, and RGB as a fallback. Because this is community-maintained software, installation steps and options can change; consult the Adaptive Lighting repository for current instructions.

- Blue Light Blocking Sleep Bulb: These 1600K amber light bulbs with remote are engineered to filter out 99.96% of blue light, creating a sleep-friendly environment that encourages natural melatonin production in the evening. By significantly reducing blue light exposure, it helps your body transition smoothly into rest—supporting healthier sleep patterns while easing eye strain.
- Advanced Eye Protection: Featuring the lowest color temperature (1600K) in its category, this circadian light bulb uses flicker-free technology to eliminate harsh flashes at any brightness. The result is a gentle, consistent light that’s comfortable for reading, relaxing, and overnight use.
- Fully Adjustable Brightness: Use the remote control for these dim light bulbs to dim the light down to 0.1% of full brightness, creating your own perfect sleeping environment. The different brightness buttons allow you to create the perfect glow—whether for a soft night light or a calming pre-sleep atmosphere.Note: Not compatible with dimmer switches!
- Ideal for Children: These amber light bulbs emit a soft, non-disruptive glow ideal for nurseries and kids’ rooms. Its blue light blocking spectrum helps maintain natural circadian rhythms in infants and toddlers, supporting healthier sleep patterns overnight. The gentle 1600K light is easy on young eyes and fits well in calming bedtime routines.
- One-Touch Sleep Modes: The amber bulbs can be controlled via the remote to select from six preset sleep modes, and the light will gradually dim at a soothing pace. A single press activates a slow, calming fade to help quiet the mind, ease physical tension, and create an ideal environment for falling asleep naturally.
Its support for manual control is useful when you want to adjust a light yourself rather than have a schedule dictate every change. Review the component’s override behavior and options against your routine, and test it with the specific light entities you plan to use.
Use custom automations for exact timing and transitions
Custom automations give you the most direct control over what happens at each point in the day. Home Assistant’s light actions can set brightness, color temperature, and transitions where the entity supports them. Sun events can provide location-based timing; fixed times can be used when you prefer a clock schedule.

Build the schedule around the controls exposed by each target light, then test its daytime and evening behavior. If manual adjustments matter, decide how your automation should respond to them before relying on it throughout the home.

Adaptive Lighting does not update scenes stored on the Hue bridge. If you activate those scenes outside the Home Assistant adaptation path, do not assume they will reflect the component’s current adjustments; the project documentation describes this limitation. A Philips Hue Bridge is relevant for this Hue setup, but a bridge is not a universal requirement for smart lighting from other brands.
What circadian lighting does—and does not establish
These integrations and automations describe ways to change home lighting over time. Their documentation establishes software behavior and compatibility requirements; it does not establish that a particular setup improves sleep, mood, or health. Treat circadian-style lighting as an automation approach, not a proven treatment.
