Best Fence for Small Dogs: How to Choose a Safe, Secure Yard

Choose a fence for your dog’s actual habits, not its size alone. Compare open fencing, privacy barriers, safe retrofits, and covered runs—and check the gate, bottom edge, and yard hazards.

The best fence for a small dog is the one that fits how that particular dog behaves—not simply one marketed for small breeds. A calm dog that neither jumps nor climbs may be safely contained by an open picket fence; a dog that digs, squeezes through gaps, chases wildlife, or tries to escape needs a more secure barrier, with careful attention to its height, gate, and bottom edge. There is no universal minimum fence height established for small dogs, and even a fenced yard requires supervision.

Start with your dog’s escape habits

Watch how your dog behaves outdoors before choosing a fence or modifying an existing one. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends letting a dog’s habits and activity guide the decision; a small or calm dog that shows no interest in jumping or climbing may suit an open picket style, while a dog that pursues wildlife or seeks a way out may require stronger containment and barriers at the bottom of the fence. AKC’s fence guide does not set a universal minimum height for small dogs.

  • Squeezing through: Check openings between rails, pickets, panels, and the ground. A dog may fit through a gap that looks too small at first glance.
  • Digging: Look for disturbed soil or openings along the fence line. The Humane Society notes that digging can reflect comfort, protection, attention, or an attempt to escape; a barrier alone may not address the cause.
  • Jumping or climbing: Don’t assume a dog’s size makes a low or climbable fence safe. Choose containment based on the dog’s demonstrated behavior.
  • Chasing or reacting to passersby: Consider whether visibility encourages barking or fence-running, and whether wildlife or other distractions draw the dog toward a boundary.

Choose the type of containment that fits

These are conditional options, not a tested ranking of products. A fence should be selected for the dog, yard, and local constraints; costs and practicalities vary with geography, yard size, installation, weather exposure, and housing restrictions. AKC’s guidance discusses these decision factors but does not provide a single cost or performance figure.

Option May fit What to check
Open picket fence A calm dog that does not jump or climb. Inspect gaps, the gate, and the bottom edge. Small size alone does not make a low or open fence secure. AKC
Solid or opaque fence A dog whose territorial barking is triggered by seeing people or animals. Blocking the view can be one management measure, not a substitute for training, supervision, or a secure gate and fence bottom. ASPCA
Retrofit to an existing fence A dog that digs under a fence or slips through an identifiable gap. Use a suitable ground-level or buried barrier, install it safely, and inspect for loose or sharp edges. Address why the dog digs as well as the route out. AKC; Humane Society
Covered dog run or exercise pen A yard that cannot be fenced, or a dog that jumps its existing fence. Check that the enclosure is appropriately sized and securely built for the individual dog. Continue supervising outdoors. ASPCA; Humane Society

Secure the gate and bottom edge

A fence is only as secure as its openings and access points. Walk the entire boundary at the dog’s level, inspect where the gate meets the ground, and remove nearby furniture or stored items that could help the dog get over the fence. AKC advises identifying how a dog is getting past a barrier and describes buried metal, cement, or rocks as possible digging barriers. Its fence guidance does not specify a universal installation design.

For digging, the Humane Society describes several options: burying chicken wire with sharp edges rolled away from the yard, partially burying large rocks, burying the fence bottom one to two feet, or anchoring chain link along the ground. These are guidance options, not a guarantee that a particular installation will contain every dog. Choose a method suited to the fence and site, keep dangerous edges inaccessible, and avoid toxic or hazardous deterrents. The Humane Society’s digging advice also emphasizes addressing the reason for the digging.

Use privacy fencing thoughtfully

If your dog barks at people or animals it can see, an opaque fence may reduce that visual trigger. The ASPCA recommends secure opaque fencing as one management step for territorial barking, alongside training and trigger management. A privacy fence does not address barking driven by other causes, and it still needs a secure gate and bottom edge. ASPCA’s behavior-management guidance covers approaches beyond blocking the view.

Keep supervising and check the yard

A fenced yard does not eliminate hazards or make unsupervised outdoor time safe. The ASPCA advises, “Always supervise your dog while they’re outdoors—even in a fenced yard.” Its dog-bite prevention guidance applies even when a fence is present.

Atlanta Humane recommends checking the yard for holes or cracks that wildlife could enter and specifically notes the need to supervise small dogs because of potential raptor risk. Its yard-safety page, dated July 13, 2023, also advises keeping the yard comfortable and engaging. Atlanta Humane’s yard-safety guidance is a reminder to check the space itself, not just the fence line.
