Start by identifying the blind or shade material and checking its product-specific care instructions: a method that works on vinyl may damage real wood or delicate fabric. For routine dust, clean horizontal slats gently on both sides with a soft cloth or an approved vacuum brush. For spots, use only a compatible cleaning method; keep real wood dry and avoid scrubbing or soaking shade fabric.
Before cleaning, identify the material
Check the product label or manufacturer’s care guide before applying water or cleaner. Wood, faux wood, aluminum, vinyl, and fabric coverings have different moisture and abrasion limits. If the model’s instructions differ from this general guide, follow the model-specific instructions. Manufacturer care guides from Blinds.com, Bali Blinds, and Graber cover common blind and shade types.
- Real wood: use a dry dusting method; moisture can harm the finish or wood.
- Faux wood or vinyl: some products allow gentle damp wiping, but this does not mean every part can be wetted.
- Fabric or cellular shades: dust gently and blot compatible stains; excess water can affect fabric or the shape of cellular folds.
- Aluminum: check the product instructions before using moisture rather than assuming it can be cleaned like vinyl.
How to remove dust from both sides of horizontal blinds
- Lower the blind fully so you can reach the slats.
- Tilt the slats nearly closed, leaving enough of an opening to reach the overlaps.
- Use a clean, soft cloth or dusting mitt to wipe the exposed face gently from one side to the other. Where the manufacturer permits vacuuming, use a soft brush attachment with a light touch.
- Reverse the slat tilt and clean the other face using the same method.
A microfiber cloth, blind duster, or suitable vacuum brush is optional; use whichever approved soft tool gives you control without bending or scratching the slats. Manufacturer instructions from Blinds.com, Lutron, and Hunter Douglas describe soft dusting tools for relevant products.
How to clean stains without damaging blinds
First distinguish loose dust from sticky residue or a set-in spot. If the care instructions permit spot cleaning, use the mildest compatible method, test it on an inconspicuous area where appropriate, and avoid wetting cords, headrails, or internal parts unless the instructions allow it.

Faux-wood and vinyl blinds
Start with a dry soft cloth or a light pass with an approved vacuum brush. If the specific product permits damp cleaning, wipe the affected area with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap, then remove soap residue and dry the surface. Hunter Douglas specifically cautions against abrasive cleaners and chemical solvents on EverWood faux-wood blinds; do not treat permission to damp-wipe as permission to use harsher products.

Fabric shades and fabric tapes
For surface dust, use a vacuum brush attachment gently if the product instructions allow it. For a compatible stain, Blinds.com advises blotting with a lint-free cloth, warm water, and mild dish soap. Do not scrub, which can pill fabric; blot dry to limit water rings. Do not submerge cellular shades or make them overly wet, because their folds can lose shape. Lutron also advises blotting fabric tapes rather than rubbing them, and blotting to rinse away detergent residue. See the care guidance from Blinds.com and Lutron.
Real wood blinds
Dust wood with a soft cloth, dusting mitt, or suitable brush attachment. Keep the slats dry, and prevent glass cleaner from splashing onto the finish. Hunter Douglas recommends spraying glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than directly onto the window near the blind. Its wood-blind guidance also cautions against ultrasonic cleaning, solvents, and scrubbing cleansers. See Hunter Douglas’s wood-blind care instructions.

Can you use water on wooden blinds?
Do not wet real wood blinds. Hunter Douglas advises protecting wood from steam, high moisture, rain, and sprinklers; Lutron likewise advises protecting wood and aluminum from rain or moist environments. Dust wood dry, and keep nearby glass-cleaning spray off the slats. These cautions are specific to the products covered by those manufacturers’ guidance, so consult your own blind’s care sheet for any additional instructions. Sources: Hunter Douglas and Lutron.
