The safest way to clean white shoes is to identify the upper material, check the shoe maker’s care instructions, then use the gentlest method those instructions allow. For compatible canvas or leather, a mild soap solution and damp cloth or soft brush can lift dirt; suede should be brushed dry. Machine washing is not a universal shortcut, and cleaning cannot always restore worn or discolored material to a like-new appearance.
Before you clean: identify the material and check the care instructions
One pair may combine canvas or textile uppers, leather, suede, rubber, removable insoles, and glued or specialty components. Those materials do not all tolerate the same cleaner or amount of water. Check the shoe maker’s care guidance before you start, especially for suede, wool, specialty materials, or shoes with electronics. If the instructions rule out water or a method, do not use it.
Choose the method according to the job: removing surface dirt, treating a mark, or restoring white color. Use a cleaner only if its label and the shoe maker both permit it for that material. Where the maker advises it, test the cleaner on a discreet area first. No single cleaner is established as best for every white shoe.
How to clean white shoes by material
Canvas and compatible leather
For canvas and leather shoes covered by its guidance, Converse recommends mixing a small amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm water. Spot-test first, then gently rub the surface with a damp cloth or soft brush. Use a light touch rather than soaking the shoe.

Suede
For routine dirt removal, let suede dry, then brush it gently. Converse specifically says not to use water on suede. Follow the instructions for your particular shoe; do not transfer a canvas or leather cleaning method to suede.
Textile uppers
Vagabond’s textile sneaker guidance recommends applying shoe cleaner with a damp cloth and gently wiping away excess. It lists a cleaning block for tougher marks. Check the product and shoe instructions for compatibility, and test discreetly if advised.

Rubber soles and trim
Converse recommends gently rubbing rubber with the same mild soap mixture using a cloth, sponge, or soft brush. Keep the cleaning action focused on the rubber rather than scrubbing the upper with a formula that may not suit it.
Clean laces and insoles separately
- Remove the laces and insoles if they are designed to come out.
- Clean laces in the mild soap mixture, as Converse advises. Clean insoles gently with a cloth, sponge, or soft brush.
- Set each part aside to dry. Do not put a component back while it is still damp.
Can you put white shoes in the washing machine?
Only if the shoe maker says that particular shoe is machine washable. Converse says not to machine wash or machine dry its shoes. By contrast, Clorox’s general guidance says some canvas, mesh, and synthetic shoes may be washable when their care instructions permit it. OxiClean likewise advises checking the care instructions and generally avoiding machine washing leather, suede, wool, and specialty materials.

If the maker permits machine washing, follow its preparation and cycle directions. Clorox recommends cold water, a delicate cycle, and air drying for shoes that are washable; it also describes using a mesh laundry bag. These are not blanket instructions for shoes whose maker prohibits machine washing. Never machine-dry a shoe unless its maker explicitly permits it.
Air-dry away from direct heat
Let cleaned shoes and their removable parts dry at room temperature, away from direct heat. Converse’s instruction is explicit: “To prolong the life of your shoes, DO NOT APPLY DIRECT HEAT.” Do not use a radiator, heater, or hot-air setting to speed the process.

Cleaning dirt is different from restoring white color
If a white shoe is clean but still looks dull, the issue may be color loss or wear rather than removable dirt. Vagabond recommends white shoe cream as a color-restoring option for compatible white leather; it is not a universal fix for textile, suede, or every kind of yellowing. OxiClean describes brightness-restoring products for washable fabric shoes, but that product guidance does not establish that every shoe or stain will return to its original color.
Avoid bleach, stain remover, or other shoe-care formulas unless both the shoe’s instructions and the product directions allow them for the material. Cleaning can improve appearance, but these care instructions do not guarantee that every pair can look brand new again.
