26 Garden Poppies Worth Growing, From Native Wildflowers to Showpiece Perennials

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Poppies can give a sunny garden bed a lot of color for very little money, but the best choice depends on your climate, soil, water plan, and tolerance for reseeding. For most US homeowners, the safest and easiest poppies to start with are California Poppy, corn or Shirley Poppy, Iceland Poppy in cool seasons, Oriental Poppy as a perennial, and Alpine Poppy for rock-garden conditions.

The one poppy group homeowners should handle carefully is Papaver somniferum, often marketed as breadseed or opium poppy. US federal law lists opium poppy and poppy straw as Schedule II controlled substances. Because seed packets and cultivar names can be confusing, we recommend avoiding questionable species and checking state and local rules before planting anything labeled breadseed, opium, or P. somniferum.

On our job sites, the biggest difference between a thin poppy patch and a clean, long-lasting flower bed is not the seed packet. It is bed preparation: full sun, drainage, weed control, irrigation that does not drown the bed, and a plan for what fills the space after spring bloom.

Best Native and Low-Water Poppies

1. California Poppy

California poppy, Eschscholzia californica, is the first poppy we recommend for sunny, low-water beds in much of the West and in dry, open gardens elsewhere. It is native in the lower 48 states, handles lean soil, and draws pollinators. Oregon State Extension reports a long bloom window in suitable West Coast conditions, roughly March through October, with visits from native bees, bumble bees, sweat bees, mining bees, and butterflies.

#1 Best Overall
HOME GROWN American Legion Red Poppy Seeds, 6,000 Seeds, Papaver rhoeas
  • VIBRANT GARDEN DISPLAY: Create stunning landscapes with six thousand red poppy seeds for planting; Produces bold, eye-catching blooms in wildflower meadows, borders, or naturalized areas; High germination rate ensures success in various soils with minimal care
  • BEGINNER-FRIENDLY PLANTING: Simply scatter these poppy flower seeds and watch them flourish; Perfect for busy gardeners seeking effortless beauty; These wildflower seeds thrive in full sun with little attention; Enjoy spectacular red blooms with minimal watering
  • EXTENDED BLOOMING SEASON: Experience two to three months of continuous vibrant red poppy displays; These poppies seeds for planting flower within 60-75 days; Perfect addition to gardens, pollinator-friendly spaces, or as striking border plants
  • DROUGHT-RESISTANT BEAUTY: These red poppy seeds require minimal watering once established; Ideal for eco-conscious gardening in well-drained soil and sunny locations; Thrives in poor soil conditions and withstands summer heat; Perfect for low-maintenance landscapes
  • SELF-SEEDING ANNUAL: Enjoy yearly blooms as these annual poppy seeds naturally reseed themselves; Creates lasting beauty in memorial gardens and honors the American Legion tradition; Attracts beneficial pollinators including bees and butterflies to your garden

Plant it where it gets at least 6 hours of sun and where irrigation does not keep the soil soggy. Mature plants usually stay 8 to 18 inches tall, which makes them useful along walkways, slopes, driveway edges, and pollinator strips. Seed packets commonly cost $2 to $9, and bulk seed can be economical because California poppy seed is tiny. One ounce may contain around 15,600 seeds, so thin sowing matters.

2. Mission Bells California Poppy

Mission Bells is a California poppy mix with softer cream, rose, orange, and yellow tones. It gives the same low-water structure as the species but fits better where bright orange would fight the house color, stonework, or existing planting palette. Use it in 3-foot to 6-foot drifts instead of scattering a few seeds everywhere.

3. Thai Silk California Poppy

Thai Silk types have ruffled, semi-double flowers. They look more ornamental than the straight species but still work best in sunny, sharply drained soil. They are good for containers at least 10 to 12 inches deep, raised beds, and front borders. Expect better performance with light, even moisture during establishment and less water once plants are rooted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Mikado California Poppy

Mikado is a strong orange selection for homeowners who want the classic poppy look. It is especially effective in a gravel garden or along a decomposed granite path. Keep the bed weed-free for the first 4 to 6 weeks after sowing; small poppy seedlings lose quickly to annual weeds.

5. Purple Gleam California Poppy

Purple Gleam brings softer purple-pink color into the California poppy group. It is useful when a bed already has blue salvia, white yarrow, silver artemisia, or ornamental grasses. Like other California poppies, it can reseed. If you want a clean edge, deadhead before seed pods mature or plan on editing seedlings each spring.

Best Annual Poppies for Easy Color

6. Corn Poppy

Corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas, is one of the easiest annual poppies from seed. It usually grows 18 to 30 inches tall and blooms in late spring to early summer, depending on planting time and climate. It likes disturbed, sunny soil, which is why it works well in meadow-style beds and informal borders.

Direct sow in fall in mild climates or very early spring in cold climates. Many poppy seeds germinate in 7 to 28 days depending on soil temperature, so do not rake up the bed after one quiet week. Mark the planting area and keep foot traffic out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Shirley Poppy

Shirley poppies are refined selections of corn poppy, often with white, pink, salmon, and red flowers. They are a good choice for cottage-style beds and cut-flower patches. They look best planted in groups of at least 25 to 50 plants, not as isolated singles. A $3 to $8 seed packet can cover a large area if the seedbed is prepared properly.

8. Flanders Poppy

Flanders poppy is the classic red corn poppy used in remembrance plantings. It needs the same conditions as corn poppy: sun, cool establishment weather, and a lightly prepared surface. It is not a summer-long bedding annual. Expect a strong spring show, then plan for the bed to transition.

9. Ladybird Poppy

Ladybird poppy has red flowers with dark blotches and a shorter, compact habit, often around 12 to 18 inches. It works in smaller beds where taller corn poppies might lean into a walkway. Plant it near low blue or silver companions so the red flowers stand out without making the bed look heavy.

10. Mother of Pearl Poppy

Mother of Pearl poppy is a soft-toned annual mix with gray, lavender, blush, and muted pink flowers. It is one of the better choices for a designed border because the colors blend more easily with perennials, stone, and painted siding. Give it room: many plants reach 24 to 36 inches tall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Cool-Season Poppies

11. Iceland Poppy

Iceland poppy, Papaver nudicaule, is best treated as a cool-season annual or short-lived perennial. It can be excellent in fall, winter, and spring in mild-winter regions, and it can provide early-season color in colder climates. It is not a heat-proof summer annual for humid regions.

Rank #2
5,000 Single Mix Poppy Heirloom Flower Seeds for Planting, Papaver Rhoeas
  • Vibrant Single Mix Poppies: Premium poppy seeds for planting produce 24 inches tall poppy flower displays in red, pink, and white. Ideal poppies seeds for planting in full sun garden beds and borders across Hardiness Zones 1–12.
  • Easy Outdoor Sowing: These poppy seeds for planting outdoors germinate in 10–20 days with no stratification. Scatter poppy plant seeds 1/8–1/4 inch deep for strong annual flower seeds in spring or late fall.
  • Long Bloom Season: Papaver rhoeas seeds deliver early summer through late summer color. This poppy flower attracts bees, butterflies, and birds, making it a vibrant pollinator seed mix for any flower garden.
  • Drought Tolerant Plants: Established poppy plants handle dry weather well and thrive in sandy or loamy soil. Bulk poppy seeds for planting suit wildflower seeds bulk projects and naturalized outdoor flower seeds areas.
  • Perfect Cut Flowers: The poppy plant creates delicate stems for bouquets. Harvest fresh poppy flowers just as they open for long vase life. Excellent cut flower seeds for a home garden or cut flower garden seeds collection.

Use Iceland poppies in containers, entry beds, and highly visible cool-season plantings. Starter plants often cost about $5 to $15 at retail garden centers. That can be worth it for a front porch or commercial entry where you want immediate spacing and color control.

12. Champagne Bubbles Iceland Poppy

Champagne Bubbles is a compact Iceland poppy series with clear colors and sturdy stems. It usually stays around 12 to 18 inches tall, so it is easier to place in containers and front borders than taller mixed Iceland types. In warm climates, plant in fall for winter and spring bloom. In cold climates, plant as soon as the soil can be worked or buy hardened-off starts.

Best Perennial Poppies for Borders

13. Oriental Poppy

Oriental poppy, Papaver orientale, is the showpiece perennial poppy for sunny borders. The flowers can be huge, often 4 to 6 inches across, and plants commonly grow 24 to 36 inches tall. The tradeoff is dormancy. After flowering, Oriental poppy foliage declines and can leave bare soil in summer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

We place Oriental poppies toward the back or middle of a border and surround them with plants that expand later: catmint, salvia, coneflower, Russian sage, yarrow, ornamental grasses, or compact shrub roses. That two-layer planting plan keeps the bed from looking empty in July.

14. Beauty of Livermere Oriental Poppy

Beauty of Livermere is a large scarlet-red Oriental poppy with a bold dark center. It needs space, usually 24 to 30 inches between plants. Use it where the spring bloom can be a focal point, then let summer perennials cover the fading foliage.

15. Patty’s Plum Oriental Poppy

Patty’s Plum is popular for its smoky plum-purple flowers. It is more subtle than scarlet Oriental types and fits well with gray foliage, white flowers, and deep green shrubs. Named Oriental poppies often cost $12 to $30 or more per pot, especially by mail order, so place them deliberately rather than buying too many.

16. Princess Victoria Louise Oriental Poppy

Princess Victoria Louise has salmon-pink flowers and a softer look than red cultivars. It is useful in traditional perennial borders and front-yard beds where bright red would be too loud. Give it full sun and drained soil. Heavy clay should be amended or raised before planting.

Specialty Poppies for the Right Site

17. Himalayan Blue Poppy

Himalayan blue poppy is beautiful but not beginner-friendly. It needs cool, moist, acidic, humus-rich soil and protection from hot summer stress. In much of the US, especially hot-summer regions, it is a high-risk plant. It makes sense in cool coastal or mountain gardens where the soil can stay evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.

18. Welsh Poppy

Welsh poppy is one of the better poppies for part shade in cool climates. It usually grows 12 to 18 inches tall and produces yellow to orange flowers. It can self-sow, which is useful in a woodland-style bed but irritating in a tightly managed formal garden.

19. Alpine Poppy

Alpine poppy is a small poppy for rock gardens, troughs, gravel beds, and raised edges. Expect plants around 6 to 12 inches tall. Drainage is non-negotiable. Use gritty soil, avoid heavy mulch over the crown, and do not place it below a roofline where water dumps during storms.

20. Spanish Poppy

Spanish poppy handles sunny, dry conditions and can work in lean perennial beds. It is not as common at local garden centers, so seed or specialty nurseries may be the easiest source. Use it where you already grow drought-tolerant perennials and where irrigation can be kept light.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

21. Atlas Poppy

Atlas poppy is another dry-site option for gardeners who like less common plants. It belongs in full sun with quick drainage. If your soil holds water for more than a day after a normal rain, correct drainage before planting or choose a tougher annual poppy instead.

  • Versatile Garden Use: Perfect for borders, wildflower gardens, or as cut flowers, Appleblossom Chiffon Poppies add a touch of grace and charm to various garden settings.

22. Armenian Poppy

Armenian poppy is useful in dry borders and naturalized plantings. Give it open soil, room for airflow, and restrained irrigation. It is a better fit for gardeners who are comfortable managing reseeding and seasonal changes than for someone who wants a static, always-neat flower bed.

23. Prickly Poppy

Prickly poppy, often in the genus Argemone, has white or yellow flowers and spiny foliage. It can be a strong choice for dry native-style beds, but it is not a plant for tight walkways, children’s play areas, or narrow maintenance paths. Wear gloves when editing seedlings or cutting back spent plants.

24. Matilija Poppy

Matilija poppy is spectacular: white flowers with yellow centers, often on plants 4 to 8 feet tall. It needs space and can spread aggressively once established. We would not install it in a 3-foot foundation bed or beside a small patio. It belongs on large slopes, open sunny banks, or wide dry borders where spread can be tolerated and managed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

25. Celandine Poppy

Celandine poppy is a woodland perennial with yellow flowers and a more shade-tolerant habit than most poppies. It is useful under open deciduous trees, along shaded paths, or in native-style woodland beds. Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy, and expect some self-sowing where it is happy.

26. Plume Poppy

Plume poppy is not a delicate flower-border poppy. It is a tall architectural perennial that can reach 5 to 8 feet and spread by rhizomes. Use it only where you need scale, screening, or a bold background plant. In small residential beds, install a root barrier or choose a better-behaved perennial.

How to Plant Poppy Seeds Correctly

Most poppies resent transplanting because of their taproots, so direct sowing is usually more reliable than starting seed indoors. The basic process is simple, but the details matter.

Prepare a weed-free, fine-textured seedbed. Remove existing weeds, loosen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil, rake out clods larger than about 1 inch, and settle the surface before sowing. Utah State Extension recommends direct sowing seed in early spring, spacing rows 12 to 24 inches apart, covering seed only about 1/8 inch, keeping the seedbed moist until germination, and thinning seedlings before they reach 6 inches tall.

Because poppy seed is small, mix it with dry sand before broadcasting. A practical ratio is 1 part seed to 5 to 10 parts sand. That gives your hand enough material to distribute evenly and reduces the thick clumps that later need thinning.

In mild climates, fall sowing often works well because winter weather naturally settles the seed and provides cool exposure. In colder climates, sow very early in spring as soon as soil can be worked. Germination may take 7 to 28 days, so keep the surface lightly moist and do not cultivate the bed too soon.

Bed Prep Matters More Than the Seed Packet

Our crews treat a poppy bed like a small construction detail: grade, drainage, edge restraint, water control, and access all decide whether the finished work holds up.

For drainage, poppies generally want soil that sheds excess water. If a bed sits below a downspout, beside a compacted driveway edge, or at the bottom of a slope, fix the water first. That may mean redirecting a downspout, raising the bed 4 to 8 inches, adding compost to improve structure, or installing a shallow swale so stormwater moves around the planting area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For edging, define the bed before sowing. Steel edging, stone, brick, or a clean spade edge keeps lawn from creeping into the seedbed. A 50- to 100-square-foot bed is large enough for a visible poppy drift without becoming a maintenance burden. Keep maintenance access in mind: if the bed is wider than 4 feet, you need stepping stones or access from both sides.

The Old Farmer's Almanac Poppy Seeds (American Legion) - Approx 5000 Flower Seeds - Premium Non-GMO, Open Pollinated, USA Origin
  • Brilliant Red Blooms - One of summer’s most radiant flowers, delicate and vivid red poppies evoke feelings of remembrance and joy.
  • Packet Contents - Each 1 Gram packet contains approximately 5000 premium, open pollinated, non-GMO, flower seeds. (See photos on this page of packet and contents.)
  • Freshly Packed - These seeds are packed for the current growing season and will provide high germination rates next year as well.
  • Flowers Your Way - Poppies work well planted with other flower varieties in mixed wildflower gardens; or planted separately to create a field of bright, crimson red.
  • Premium Packaging - All seeds from The Old Farmer’s Almanac are packaged in individually styled packets ideal for gifts, storage or immediate use. Each packet displays the flower, vegetable, plant or herb variety on the front with instructions and plant facts on the back.

For irrigation, avoid daily overspray from lawn heads. Poppies need steady moisture during germination, then generally prefer less frequent watering. A drip line or careful hand watering is better than soaking the foliage every evening. Overwatering in heavy soil is one of the fastest ways to get weak plants and root problems.

Realistic 2026 Costs for a Poppy Flower Bed

Poppies are inexpensive when the site is already right. They become expensive when the bed needs grading, drainage correction, edging, irrigation changes, or professional installation.

Project item Typical 2026 US cost What changes the price
Seed packets About $2-$9 each Species, brand, packet size, specialty cultivar
Online poppy seed listings About $4.45-$22.80, with an average near $8.93 Quantity, mix type, seller, shipping
Starter plants About $5-$15 each Local supply, pot size, annual vs perennial
Named perennial poppies About $12-$30+ each Cultivar, pot size, mail-order shipping
DIY 50-100 sq. ft. bed refresh About $40-$200 Compost, mulch, seed, labels, minor edging
Professional new flower bed Often $1,000-$3,000, or about $10-$20 per sq. ft. Labor, soil removal, edging, irrigation, access
Higher-end custom bed About $20-$65 per sq. ft. Raised construction, hardscape, drainage, design complexity

A simple DIY poppy bed can be a weekend project. A new 5-by-12-foot in-ground bed with soil work, edging, plants, mulch, and labor can land in the $1,400 to $3,700 range depending on the site. National flower-bed installation averages reported for 2026 cluster around $2,000 to $2,370, with typical ranges roughly $1,100 to $3,175.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY makes sense when the bed is small, sunny, already drains well, and does not require irrigation changes. If you are refreshing an existing 50- to 100-square-foot bed, you can usually handle seed, compost, light mulch, and simple edging touch-ups for $40 to $200 in materials.

Hire a pro when the project involves slope, standing water, compacted soil, retaining edges, drainage correction, large turf removal, or irrigation changes. Those details are where flower beds fail. A poppy seed packet cannot overcome a bed that catches roof runoff or sits in compacted clay.

For safety, call 811 before digging deeper than a few inches, installing edging stakes, trenching irrigation, or building raised beds with posts. Permits are rarely needed for simple planting, but retaining walls, drainage discharge changes, electrical lighting, and work in easements can trigger local rules. If the bed touches a sidewalk, driveway sightline, HOA frontage, or utility corridor, check requirements before construction.

What to Plant With Poppies

Poppies are often early-season plants, so design the bed in layers. Put poppies in the first wave, then use summer and fall plants to carry the space after bloom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good companions for annual poppies include larkspur, bachelor button, yarrow, coreopsis, blanket flower, salvia, and ornamental grasses. For California poppy, use low-water companions such as penstemon, yarrow, blue grama, deergrass, hummingbird sage in suitable regions, and native buckwheats.

For Oriental poppies, use later perennials that expand as poppy foliage fades: coneflower, catmint, salvia, bee balm, allium, daylily, Russian sage, and compact grasses. Keep companion plants 18 to 30 inches away from the poppy crown so they cover the gap without smothering the perennial.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The first mistake is planting in shade. Most poppies need at least 6 hours of direct sun to bloom well. Woodland exceptions exist, such as celandine poppy, but the classic garden poppies want open light.

The second mistake is burying seed too deeply. Many poppy seeds need light or very shallow cover. Keep cover around 1/8 inch, then water gently so the seed is not washed into piles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The third mistake is rough transplanting. Taprooted poppies often stall when started indoors too late or moved carelessly. Direct sow annual types. For perennial nursery plants, keep the root ball intact and plant at the same depth as the pot.

  • SUPPORTS POLLINATORS – Red Flanders poppy seeds produce nectar-rich blooms that attract bees and butterflies, providing an essential food source during their peak foraging period from late spring to summer.

The fourth mistake is overwatering. Poppies need moisture to germinate, not swamp conditions. Heavy clay, daily lawn overspray, and low spots create weak growth and root problems.

The fifth mistake is ignoring what happens after bloom. Corn poppies, Shirley poppies, Iceland poppies, and Oriental poppies can all leave gaps after their main show. A good bed has companion plants, mulch, and a reseeding plan before the first seed is sown.

Legal and Practical Cautions

Most ornamental and native poppies in this guide are normal garden plants. The caution is Papaver somniferum. US federal schedules list opium poppy and poppy straw as controlled substances. Because retail names can be vague, avoid seed sold as breadseed, opium poppy, or P. somniferum unless you have confirmed the legal status where you live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also manage reseeding responsibly. California poppy, corn poppy, Welsh poppy, and some specialty types can self-sow. That may be welcome in a meadow bed and unwelcome in a formal front walk. Deadhead before seed pods mature if you want control. Leave seed heads if you want a naturalized look.

Many poppies are described as deer-resistant, but no plant is deer-proof under pressure. In high-deer areas, protect young seedlings with temporary fencing or repellents until plants are established.

Bottom Line

If you want the highest chance of success, match the poppy to the site. Use California poppy for low-water sun, corn and Shirley poppies for easy annual color, Iceland poppies for cool-season containers, Oriental poppies for perennial spring drama, and alpine or specialty poppies only where the soil and climate fit.

Spend your effort on the bed: sun, drainage, shallow sowing, weed control, and a second layer of companion plants. That is what turns a packet of tiny seed into a garden bed that looks intentional instead of temporary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the easiest poppies to grow from seed?

California poppy, corn poppy, Shirley poppy, Flanders poppy, and many Iceland poppies are among the easiest. Direct sow them into a weed-free sunny bed and cover seed very lightly, about 1/8 inch.

When should I plant poppy seeds in the US?

In mild climates, sow in fall for winter establishment and spring bloom. In cold climates, sow very early in spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Germination can take 7 to 28 days.

Are poppies annuals or perennials?

Both. Corn, Shirley, and most California poppies are usually grown as annuals, though they may reseed. Oriental poppies are long-lived perennials. Iceland poppies are often grown as cool-season annuals or short-lived perennials.

Are poppies legal to grow in a home garden?

Many ornamental and native poppies are ordinary garden plants, but Papaver somniferum, often called breadseed or opium poppy, creates legal risk because opium poppy and poppy straw are federally controlled. Avoid questionable seed and check local law.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my poppy seeds not germinate?

Common causes include burying seed too deeply, letting the seedbed dry out, sowing in hot weather, disturbing the bed too soon, or allowing weeds to overtake small seedlings.

What should I plant with Oriental poppies after they go dormant?

Use later perennials such as catmint, salvia, coneflower, yarrow, bee balm, daylily, Russian sage, or compact ornamental grasses. Plant them close enough to cover summer gaps but not directly on top of the poppy crown.
