The best plants for a tiered container garden depend on how much sun or shade reaches each individual pot. For sunny tiers, consider lantana, salvia, calibrachoa, petunias, or verbena; for light shade, try begonias, impatiens, coleus, bacopa, or torenia. In each pot, combine plants only when their light, soil, and watering needs are compatible.
Choose plants for each tier’s actual light
A tiered stand creates different growing spots: an upper pot may receive direct sun while a lower one is shaded by the pots or foliage above it. Assess light where each plant will grow, then check the plant label for its exposure requirements and mature size. These examples are starting points, not a universal ranking; climate, season, and cultivar affect what will thrive.
Sunny tiers
| Role | Plant options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Upright focal points | Lantana, salvia, dahlia, cannas, purple fountain grass, or taller zinnias | Choose a plant whose mature height and spread suit the pot and the stand. |
| Mounding fillers | Calibrachoa, lantana, verbena, petunias, marigolds, mounding dianthus, or ‘Diamond Frost’ euphorbia | Short or dwarf zinnias may also fill space without competing with taller plants. |
| Trailing accents | Calibrachoa, trailing petunia, trailing verbena, ivy-leaved pelargonium, sweet potato vine, or trailing nasturtium | Allow room for trailing growth and make sure it will not obstruct access to lower tiers. |
These sunny-container examples draw on the Royal Horticultural Society’s [container planting guidance] and a University of the District of Columbia Master Gardener’s answer to a Washington, DC, planter question on April 30, 2025 [Ask Extension response]. The response is specific to that reader and location, so confirm local growing conditions before planting.
Light-shade tiers
For a tier that gets light shade, consider begonias, Impatiens walleriana, coleus, bacopa, torenia, golden creeping Jenny, or variegated ground ivy. Coleus adds foliage color; creeping Jenny and bacopa can trail over a pot’s edge. The RHS identifies these as light-shade options, not as a guarantee that every variety will tolerate deep or all-day shade. Check the label for your chosen cultivar.

Regional native options
Native plants can also work in containers, but suitability depends on species and local conditions. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources groups examples by habit, including columbines, bellflowers, sedges, coreopsis, coneflowers, and spike rushes [Illinois DNR container plant guidance]. Its list is regional; use local nursery labels or regional guidance to verify light needs where you live.
Build each pot around compatible plants
A useful design shorthand is “thriller, filler, spiller”: an upright focal plant, one or more mounding plants, and a trailing accent. It is a flexible composition, not a required recipe. In a display viewed from one side, place the tallest plant toward the back; if the planter is visible from all directions, place it nearer the center.

More important than matching flower colors is matching growing requirements. University of Illinois Extension puts the rule plainly: “Plants that thrive in like soil, watering, and light conditions make successful combinations” [University of Illinois Extension]. Avoid putting a plant that needs consistently moist soil in the same pot as one that prefers to dry between waterings.
Set up the pots for healthy roots
- Use container mix. Choose a soilless potting mix rather than ordinary garden soil. Oklahoma State University Extension notes that garden soil can compact in containers, restricting air and water around roots [Oklahoma State container guidance].
- Leave room for watering. Fill the pot below its rim; Illinois DNR recommends leaving one to two inches of space at the top. Make sure the pot drains and do not let water stand in its saucer.
- Size plants to the container. Illinois DNR offers a rule of thumb: a 10–12 inch container holds three medium plants in four- to six-inch nursery pots. Treat this as a starting point, not a fixed formula for every tier or plant; adjust for pot shape, mature spread, and growth habit.
- Keep the stand stable and accessible. Account for the weight of watered pots and leave room to reach each tier for watering and maintenance.
Water according to conditions, not a fixed calendar
Check the potting mix and plants regularly rather than relying on a universal watering schedule. Containers in full sun can heat up and dry faster, and container-grown natives may need more water than the same plants growing in the ground. A UDC Master Gardener answering the Washington, DC, question advised: “Remember to water the container because they can easily dry out in full sun” [Ask Extension response].

If daily watering is impractical, the RHS suggests considering drought-resistant plants for containers. Even then, match plants within each pot by moisture needs and check the mix as weather and exposure change. A tier’s shade can also shift as nearby plants grow.

A quick selection checklist
- Check the light at the level of each pot, not just the overall location of the stand.
- Choose plants with compatible light, soil, and watering needs for each individual container.
- Combine upright, mounding, and trailing forms if they fit the pot and display; the formula is optional.
- Confirm mature size, local climate suitability, and seasonal availability on the plant label.
- Use a free-draining container mix, provide drainage, and monitor moisture—especially for sunny pots.
