Choose a tiered planter by the crops you want to grow and the usable depth and volume of each pocket—not by the planter’s overall size. Then confirm it will sit securely in its intended location, has a clear drainage or self-watering path, and can be filled with container growing mix rather than garden soil alone. Each tier still needs to suit its own plants and conditions.
Size each planting pocket for its crop
A tiered unit may have several planting areas, but plants share neither one root space nor necessarily the same growing conditions. Check the usable depth and capacity of each pocket, then match it to the crop and variety. The University of Illinois Extension’s 2022 guide gives these minimum container-size examples; they are reference points, not universal prescriptions for every variety or planter shape.
| Crop | Example minimum container size |
|---|---|
| Tomatoes | 20 inches |
| Peppers | 16 inches |
| Carrots | 12 inches |
| Radishes, onions, beets, leafy greens, herbs, and flowers | 10 inches |
These dimensions are from the [University of Illinois Extension’s container-gardening guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2022-07-08-how-grow-fruits-vegetables-herbs-container-gardens). A planter’s long, narrow trough is not equivalent to a round pot with the same width: compare the actual depth and volume available to roots.
Use volume as a second check
The same University of Illinois guide provides approximate capacities for round containers. Use them as reference examples rather than exact conversions for tiered pockets, whose geometry differs.

Balance capacity with watering and plant fit
Small containers dry faster, while larger ones generally need watering less often for the same plants in the same location. But bigger is not automatically better: a container much too large for its plant can stay wet longer and raise the risk of root rot. The [University of Illinois Extension’s container-size guidance](https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2022-07-08-how-grow-fruits-vegetables-herbs-container-gardens) explains this trade-off. Choose enough space for mature roots without ignoring how the mix will dry.
Choose a stable structure for its location
Tiered planters range from freestanding wooden troughs to stacked or self-watering designs. Maryland Extension illustrates a freestanding wooden planter with three offset trough-like tiers planted with bush cucumbers and dwarf tomatoes. Treat that as an example of one arrangement, not proof that all tiers or structures suit every crop.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Before buying or building, assess the filled unit as well as the empty frame. Wet growing mix and plants add weight; the planter should resist tipping and be appropriate for its surface. This matters especially on a balcony, deck, rooftop, or exposed site. Consider the material’s heat exposure, whether the unit can be moved or serviced, and whether each pocket is reachable for planting and watering. No reviewed source establishes a universally best brand or model.
Check light, water access, and runoff at the site
Sun and reflected heat can differ between tiers and from one side of a planter to another. Maryland Extension advises 6 to 8 hours of direct sun for warm-season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and squash, and 3 to 5 hours for cool-season crops such as lettuce, spinach, and Asian greens. These are the extension’s general crop guidelines, not a guarantee that every tier at a particular site receives that light.

- Observe the intended location and assess the light where each tier’s plants will grow.
- Place the planter where watering is practical.
- Account for heat reflected from masonry, paving, decking, and metal.
- Notice where water from upper tiers will land, and whether it could soak a lower pocket or spill onto a walkway or neighboring surface.
Maryland Extension covers location and watering considerations in its [container vegetable gardening guidance](https://extension.umd.edu/resource/growing-vegetables-containers-and-salad-tables/).
Select container growing mix, not garden soil alone
Container mix needs to provide air, water, nutrients, and physical support while letting roots grow. University of Illinois Extension describes suitable media as well aerated, free draining, and able to retain enough water; possible ingredients include peat, vermiculite, bark, coconut fiber, and perlite. Garden soil used by itself can drain and aerate poorly in a container and may introduce weed seeds or pathogens.

“Compost” can mean different things. The Royal Horticultural Society distinguishes garden compost, commonly used as a soil improver, from seed or potting compost used to grow plants in containers. Choose a product labeled for container growing rather than assuming garden compost or topsoil alone will behave like potting mix. See the [RHS guidance on vegetables in containers](https://www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables/containers).
Check fertilizer and crop suitability on the label
Packaged container mixes may or may not include fertilizer. Read the label for its ingredients, intended use, coverage, and any fertilizer directions; follow the stated instructions rather than assuming all mixes feed plants for the same length of time. The [University of Illinois Extension container-gardening guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2022-07-08-how-grow-fruits-vegetables-herbs-container-gardens) discusses media and container planting.

Give excess water a way out
For a conventional planter, drainage means excess water has an unobstructed exit. A layer of gravel, rocks, or pot shards at the bottom is not a drainage fix: Maryland Extension says it takes up root space and can worsen drainage. If a large hole lets mix escape, cover it with a porous material that retains the mix without blocking water flow.
A self-watering planter is a different arrangement: growing mix sits above a water reservoir, and extra water leaves through an overflow hole. Make sure you understand how that design is filled and where its overflow discharges. Maryland Extension describes both drainage and self-watering considerations in its [container and salad-table guidance](https://extension.umd.edu/resource/growing-vegetables-containers-and-salad-tables/).
Estimate how much mix to buy
Work from the capacity of each planting pocket and add the amounts for the whole unit. Maryland Extension’s practical estimate is that one 2-cubic-foot bag of potting mix fills three 5-gallon buckets or grow bags. That is a guide, not a guaranteed yield for every planter: pocket shape, settling, and the product’s fill level can change coverage. Check the bag’s own coverage statement and compare it with your planter’s dimensions before buying.
For a tiered planter, measure each pocket’s usable interior dimensions and estimate its volume, then total the pockets. If the pockets are irregular or tapered, treat a simple length-by-width-by-depth calculation as an estimate, not exact capacity. The bag comparison and container dimensions are more useful together than either alone.

When comparing planters and growing mixes, focus on the attributes that affect your crops and site rather than relying on a generic “best” label.
Quick Recap
- Planter: usable depth and volume in each pocket; crop fit; stability when filled; material and heat exposure; drainage or reservoir-and-overflow design; runoff direction; access for care; and ability to move or service the unit.
- Growing mix: aeration, drainage, moisture retention, suitability for the intended crops, fertilizer content and directions, and bag coverage.
