One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo reduce heat gain and glare in a glass office building, first identify which façades and work areas are affected and when. Then compare exterior shading, solar-control glazing or film, and interior shades as a coordinated system. Exterior shading can stop sunlight before it enters; glazing choices affect both solar heat and daylight; and interior controls can give occupants immediate glare relief. The right combination depends on the building’s orientation, climate, existing glass, use, and energy goals.
Start by diagnosing the building
Before choosing a product, map the problem. Sun exposure changes by façade and time of day, and direct-sun glare is not the same as glare from a bright sky or reflected light. A measure that blocks a sunbeam may not resolve a bright window in an occupant’s field of view.
- Record each glazed façade’s orientation, glazing area, glass type if known, and existing shade geometry.
- Note when glare occurs, which workstations are affected, and whether the source is direct sun, a bright sky, or reflections.
- Document seasonal hot and cold complaints, current shade use, and building energy use, including heating and cooling loads where available.
- Identify constraints such as views, neighboring obstructions, façade access, cleaning, and maintenance.
These details matter because orientation, glazing, shading, daylight, and building use interact. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains that a good daylight building must limit direct sunlight from entering: DOE: Building Envelope & Architectural Considerations. Its general guidance does not diagnose a particular property, so use the building’s own conditions to guide the next step.
Compare the main ways to control sun
Direct sunlight should be intercepted, filtered, or redirected before it causes glare and adds heat indoors. Evaluate each measure against the façade and the hours when the problem occurs, rather than relying on a single product metric.

| Option | Where it can help | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior shading | Blocks sunlight before it reaches the glass. DOE identifies south-facing overhangs, east- and west-facing vertical elements, awnings, solar screens, and landscaping as possible approaches. | Geometry depends on latitude, façade direction, obstructions, wind, views, access, and maintenance. East and west façades can be especially difficult because low-angle sun is harder to shade. |
| Solar-control film or replacement glazing | Can change the solar heat entering through the glass while affecting how much visible light passes through. | Compare solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), visible transmittance, U-factor, appearance, views, durability, maintenance, and installed cost. Confirm compatibility with the existing glass and coatings. |
| Interior shades | Provide occupants with direct, adjustable control of glare at work areas. | They act after sunlight has passed through the glazing. If shades remain closed, they can also reduce useful daylight; pair them with an operating and lighting-control strategy. |
DOE’s window guidance describes exterior shading approaches and their application: DOE: Energy-Efficient Window Attachments. Actual performance depends on the building and design; the options above are not interchangeable across every orientation or façade.
Choose shading to match façade orientation
East and west façades
Low-angle morning and afternoon sun can be difficult to block with a simple horizontal overhang. Consider façade-specific exterior elements, such as vertical shading, solar screens, or other designs suited to the sun path. Check whether the proposed system preserves needed views and can be safely installed and maintained.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
South-facing façades
In suitable climates and designs, an overhang can shade south-facing glass when the sun is high. Its dimensions and effectiveness depend on location, façade geometry, season, and surrounding obstructions; do not select an overhang by a generic rule without evaluating the site.
Existing curtain walls
An exterior retrofit to a curtain wall may require review of attachment, structural capacity, wind loads, fire requirements, façade access, cleaning, and appearance. Have the building’s façade engineer and relevant local authorities review the proposed system before specifying it.

Select glazing and film for the building’s heat balance
Low-emissivity coatings influence heat transfer and can help manage daylight and solar heat gain. DOE also describes some low-e films as a less expensive alternative to full window replacement, but that does not establish that a particular film is suitable for a commercial curtain wall or will perform as intended on the building. See DOE: Window Types.
For a cooling-dominated space, lower SHGC may help limit solar heat gain. In a heating-dominated space where passive solar heating is useful, higher solar gain may be appropriate. The choice also affects daylight and heating demand, so compare the glazing properties together rather than choosing on SHGC alone.

Daylight can reduce the need for electric lighting and the cooling associated with lighting, but direct sun can create both glare and excess heat. DOE describes good daylighting as a balance between enough daylight and too much sunlight: DOE: Lighting & Daylighting.

Interior shades can give occupants short-term control, but adjustable blinds that are lowered and then left closed may cut off useful daylight. Coordinate glare control with lighting controls, and involve occupants in commissioning and operation so the system is usable in practice.
Evaluate retrofit options with building-specific analysis
Before committing to a major retrofit, compare candidate measures for the actual facility. DOE describes energy modeling as a design tool in its energy modeling overview and provides Advanced Energy Retrofit Guides to help decision makers plan, design, and implement facility energy improvements.
A structured engineering study or building energy model should consider annual and peak heating and cooling effects, lighting energy, visual comfort, occupant control, façade risks, maintenance, installed cost, and installation disruption. Compare alternatives under the building’s actual weather, orientation, glazing, and operating conditions; no universal savings or payback estimate applies to an unspecified office building.
DOE’s recommendations are general guidance, not a stamped design or a prediction for a particular property. Have qualified façade and building-energy professionals review local code requirements, existing glazing, and project conditions before procurement.
